So I normally use Avast for all my anti "stuff" and I feel there's got to be something better. Viruses, malware, spyware, web protection etc. What's your favorite?

Microsoft Security Essentials on Win 7, Windows Defender (built in MSE) on Win 8 and common sense. Free and it works.

For me the only time I install third party software anymore is when I have an issue.  With that, 9 times out of 10 anymore, Spybot fixes everything.  If not, wipe and reinstall windows.  Not near as painful with 8 as it was with XP.

Hitman is pretty good for malware and internet issues, it detects and removes proxies.

use a hypervisor and just restore the guest OS or whatever if anything happens. Or on every boot.

It's more important to just not go on websites where you'll get that sort of thing. Most people, this is what happens to them.

I'm glad I never got into that. But for those that have:
linux toram. Everything virus will be removed when you reboot.

Comodo's HIPS has never failed me so far, though I'm pretty careful anyways.

There's always Rollback RX as well, it hooks into the IO drivers and turns every hard drive overwrite into a normal write so you can undo and recover anything to any arbitrary time point as long as you have enough hard drive space.

I don't think I have any anti evil stuff on my computer. I don't really feel like it's really necessary for any, I only download from trusted sites and look up the site on google to see if they're any good lol.

These days I use the free avast, but I figure that MSE will handle most of it.

I used to run more, including Malwarebytes, but I got to the point where I felt like I was taking an unnecessary performance hit.

Avira and Bitdefender are the two top products and they happen to be free as well. And this whole "use Linux to be virus-free" thing is silly; I've been running Windows for years without an antivirus and I'm fine. As tempting as it is, just don't download that porn.exe.

I use Norton, and I will say that is a noob solution. Norton sucks and screws up your computer and winds up denying your browser access to the internet.

But looking at this thread I don't think I can handle the more complicated technical demands, let alone migrate to Linux.

I used Norton Utilities religiously from when I got my first computer in 1985 until about the time I started with Windows XP, around 2003, when I decided that I was taking a big performance hit, and Norton started charging a lot more money (including subscription vs purchase, which makes my blood boil anyway).

Since then I have rotated between various free anti-malware softwares, and I have used Glary Utilities for several years for my general housekeeping.

It's really not that difficult, and if you run into issues there are lots of people ready to help (and lots of guidelines so you can find the answers you need with a search).

If you just browse the internet, play music, write up documetns: general stuff like that you most likely won't run into problems at all, and the performance is usually a bit better than windows.

I find that using some browser extensions like adblock + ghostery or disconnect + noscript does a lot to keep out the driveby stuff. Then I just use the default MSE/Defender that comes with Windows and common sense. If I get paranoid there is something that got through I use one of the live linux AV things like Avira. Using a read only AV is about as bulletproof as you can get and it's not much trouble to reboot into it and run scan once a month or whatever you're comfortable with.

If you need to run questionable software from dodgy sources, then setting up a test system with something like returnil or reboot restore rx may be a good way to go.
