Off Hiatus soon!

Hello and welcome!

After searching through many different sets of keycaps, I was shocked to find we were severely lacking in green and brown keycap sets. So I felt like it was time to change that. And what better way than to honor the planet we all live on. :)

The Story

Quote

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”

– David Attenborough

From a brand new creator and designer, Omnipotent/io2red brings us, Planet Earth! A keycap set that is inspired by the beautiful and amazing planet that gives us all life.

May I present to you...

Planet Earth

Technical Specs

Profile: Undecided. Probably SA (1-1-2-3-4-3), SA 3 Uniform, or Flat/Unsculptured DSA
Keycap Manufacturer: Probably by Signature Plastics
Colors: (Signature plastics ABS) VCS, TGH, GD.
Keyboard Compatibility: Almost everything! Ergodox, Planck, ISO, HHKB, Clueboard, VB660m, RS78, TKL, WKL, 75%, 65%, 40%, and even Numpads.
Price: No quote attempted yet.
Group Buy: <Not Yet Active> (Will probably be done through MassDrop or PMK)
Keyboard-Layout-Editor links: <Currently Not Shared>

Keycap Manufacturer: Probably by Signature Plastics, because GMK doesn't have a green that looks good with brown. :(
(Unless GMK BR1 & N7 are closer to SP TGH & VCS than I currently realize. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.)

FAQ

Q: Where will this be dropped?
A: I am not sure yet. But there is a good chance it will be on Massdrop or PMK, unless someone can help me organize it.

Q: Why does <Insert Kit Name Here> have this button? [pic]
A: I am a usually a Full keyboard user. All of these child kits have been developed with my own personal research and might not be perfect. Some could potentially be optimized better. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear from you!

Q: Is this set compatible with Logitech G710 or Corsair Strafe?
A: No, not entirely sorry. There is no 6.5u spacebar included in this kit. You will need to find or use your own.

Q: What are the color chips used in this set?
A: &

Q: How would I cover a... <Insert Keyboard Name Here>?
A: Each keyboard can vary greatly. But I have tried to accommodate as many different layouts as possible.

Winkeyless keyboard: Base + Mods + TKL Kit + Tsangan + Spacebars
Infinity 60% Hacker/Standard: Base + Mods
Standard 60% (ANSI): Base + Mods

I think DSA might be a better profile for this set. From what I've seen, most successful SA sets have been based on a culturally significant piece of art. On the other hand, there is a good number of successful DSA sets which have not had specific sources of inspiration.

Thanks for your input! I hear you on that. DSA was really what I was originally considering for this set. But there are already a lot of DSA sets that in the making right now, and it is back ordered quite a bit. I also had never used a DSA set at that point. Now that I have used DSA I don't really love it as much as originally thought I would.  :p Depending on how much cheaper it is though, it may be well worth it. DSA is not out of the question.  ;)

Indeed, someone mentioned that on Reddit as well and I hear you. Blue and gray were considered in earlier mock ups of this set. The original concept itself used blue legends on the green keys. But in an attempt to keep the costs lower, I have limited the color palette. AFAIK using more colors can increase the cost quite a bit. So I think it would be in our best interest to keep the colors limited for now. In the future I would definitely be interested in exploring the possibilities of adding colors like blue or gray.

Here is a previous version of the base and child kits to show you what I mean about Gray being used. It looks pretty good and I'm sure blue would too. :)

I'm not sure amount of colors factors into cost as much as key quantity. http://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-borealis-keyset/
I'd ask Melissa at SP to be sure.

I think you could omit the blue and change the name to "Terra Firma" since Terra Firma is Earth with dry land & without the air & water.  Just a suggestion.

Looks great nonetheless, especially if it's in SA.

Alright, thats good to know, thanks! In other industries printing multiple colors at once can get exponentially more expensive. So I was under the impression adding more colors would increase the prices here as well. I will try and get in touch with her today and confirm.

Thank you for the input! Very interesting suggestion. The current name is not set is stone, so this is possible. Seeing as people are sounding like they want the water though; I may end up designing in some blue and sticking with the Planet Earth name. "Terra Firma" is definitely an option. Another name I had been considering for this is "Garden of Eden".

No love for Mac users?
They usually don't do well MOQ wise as child kits, but I can design one. I was originally thinking they could use the META/SUPER keys already included in the base kit. And if you needed other keys, there is a Novelties Kit and ISO / UK kit that should cover it.

What keys would you need for a Mac Kit?

Also, if I were to add blue to this set. Where does everyone think it would fit in best?
(1) Blue legends with brown keys?
(2) Blue legends with green keys?
(3) Green legends with blue keys?
(4) Brown legends with blue keys?
Note: BDH (#005699) is the color used here.

And what would your ideal blue color be?

BDH (#005699)

BFK (#005190)

BO (#004c7f)

BE (#006f9a)

Or another? Signature Plastics ABS Colors

I have an idea which would allow you to keep to the spirit of SA sets, but which might require some more changes to the color scheme. You can refocus the set around the The Blue Marble picture, which I've attached below. I'm thinking that the two pairings of colors you should use are green on brown and white on blue.

It sounds good in theory but it doesn't seem to look as good when pictured. :P

Reversed though I kinda like this.

Or this. (which does seem to make sense. The blue ocean with white clouds. & brown land with green on it.)

This one is alright, but the two above it are better IMO.

I like the 3rd option the best. Did you try it with a single legend color, either the white or the green for both alpha and mods?

Agreed, the third looks best to me too. Second is also decent but third makes sense in many ways.

I like the 3rd option the best. Did you try it with a single legend color, either the white or the green for both alpha and mods?

Agreed, glad to hear it. I had not... But I just tried it now.

White (WFK #e5e4df) Legends

Green (VCS #00792c) Legends

The Green Legends do not seem to contrast very well with the BDH (#005699). But the White legends are decent.

I still prefer option 3 from the last batch though. What do you guys think? I can design a mock-up of it later today.

Great idea. Will do! I still really like the Planet Earth set. So I'm going to keep this design here and put this set on hiatus for the time being. I am working on a new thread for The Blue Marble as we speak. Be on the lookout for that soon. :)

Good luck! If you ever revive this set I think it should be DSA for the reason I mentioned above and also to reduce its similarity to The Blue Marble.

I just realized two things. First, this colorway is strikingly similar to that of Little Garden. Second, you might want to use beige in lieu of brown in The Blue Marble.

Thanks! It was originally planned for DSA so there is a good chance it will be.  ;D

The Little Garden was just posted, yes. I came up with the first two designs long before the Little Garden was created however (back in March). And his is not using any green colored keys, just green legends. That set previously did not use any green colored keys. Now it has green spacebars that he recently added. When you compare them, mine has a much different feel with a lot more green however. So I don't really have any concerns with people thinking they look too similar. :P

I had chose the brown because it looked close to dirt and there really aren't any other brown-ish colors. There is like two total, haha. What kind of beige were you thinking of? RBC? https://deskthority.net/wiki/Signature_Plastics_ABS_colours
