Cherry's of the 90s: Where there non clicky G80s?
« on: Tue, 13 September 2011, 16:50:10 »
Hi there,

I discoverd this board last week after I killed a few keys of my G81-3000 at work with a cup of tea. I recalled the nice clicky sound and feel of a G80 and he got a G80-LSCDE-2 for my desk (although the G81 dryed out and was back on track two days later). Until this event I always thought G80 was clicky and G81 was non clicky. This is obviously not true, but now I am trying to queston my keyboard history.

I'm from germany and needless to say I grew up with Cherry keyboards. The first PC I used was one im my father's company , it was 1992 and it had a Cherry with non-clicky keys. In 1993 he got a 486 DX2/66 for his company with a clicky Cherry. I got my own PC in 1995 and just ordered it with a Cherry keyboard and didn't specify anything it didn't click and soon after that I switched the keyboard with the clicky one from my father's company.

This keyboard I used until 2006 (when I got my actual PC). It was, no it is a Cherry G80-3000 (as you would think) and is still in use with my old PC, that my mother uses. I am curios If the non clicky keyboards that I used in the early 90s where also G80-3000 with a linear switch (blacks) or just G81s? I recall that the hardware shops at the time only said "Cherry keyboard with click" or "Cherry keyboard without click" in their lists. The keyboars without click where usually 10 DM (Deutsche Mark) cheaper than the "keyboards with click".

Did Cherry produce G80s with different switches at the time like they do today or were the non-clicky boards G81s?

Other than blue MX, linear black MX switches and linear MY switches (higher actuation force) coexisted in G80 and G81 series with different prices. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this followed popular 1000, 1800 and 3000 series from, or near the start.
P.e, for the 1000 series launched in the late 80s, there was G80-1000 HCD (black MX), G80-1000 HFD (blue MX) and G81-1000 HBD (MY) for your "D" layout with "H" double-shots.

Thanks, G80s were already available at that time. I hope I didn't waste them.

Just stay away from the MYs. I heard how bad they were from everyone on here, but I thought I'd try them anyway.

Result= they are very bad.
