I'm gonna change my rubbery razor
« on: Sun, 13 May 2012, 16:06:02 »
Hey geeks, i'm a new one.
I have spent my last two weeks searching info on keyboards. I'm new in the keycraft.
I will start a new Thread. There's tons of information here in geekhack, my brain is getting overloaded! i've read different points of view, everyones has his opinions. I hope this thread can focus on my requests.

I'm typing with a rubbery lycosa that is getting older and rough, the time has come to change this (nice) rubbery crap ! of course into a mech !
I'm a gamer, macro/keybinder style. I played WoW for a while as a discopriest. I'm looking for alot of keys and also for an extra function button.
I've read about the extreme layout keyboards matrixlike ecc. They are expensive and not mechanical, I've excluded this kind of keyboard. What i'm really looking for would be a fully customizable mechpad.

I've got my eyes on Noppo choc mini and that type of layout: kbt race, Cherry G84-4100 ecc. What i like of those are the F-keys and compactness . I chose the noppo over the other mainly cause the quality/price.

I'm interested in the extra key that the japanese layout have, also the Cherry G84-4100.
Do i really need such a big spacebar for playing games ? nope :/ conversely an extra funcional key would be nice, or ever a bigger Alt key for that matter. When i play, my thumb position is exacly near Alt, (where the extra key is supposed to be), when i type my thumb moves to the right, so having a smaller spacebar will not be a problem for me.

I think i can go for the cherry mx black, but i've never tried them, does someone know what's the g of my lycosa keys?

Stack nickels on your lycosa's keys, each one is 5g according the the rip-o-meter.

May help in your search for your first switch type:

Also, re: key programming, some keyboards have dip switches on the bottom that will change the functionality / turn off keys like the windows key and others.

Here I am. Thanks geeks.
According to the rip-o-meter my lycosa should be 60+ g (I reached 70 on a key).
My choice is red, Red cherry MX for the new keyboard.

Now, what about :

There are any change to get this extra key on the noppo choc mini?

I don't understand what you are trying to ask.  Nice pornstar name by the way.

ok, I've took time to reflect on Ripster's words.
The extra keys seem to not be available for noppoo choc and all of these other compact layouts.
Last questions :
# Are noppos all the same? Are there different models or editions? Do you have a suggestion or advice on purchasing noppos (amazon, ebay, othershops, average price,pbt/pom ecc...)?
I'm thinking about white mini with red cherry.

For now i will buy the noppoo, after this purchase I will probably look for a japanese filco
I will continue the research of the filco in this topic.
Filco zero is a good one with the extra keys, isn't it ?
what about its switches ? Why a filco zero over another filco?
Where can i buy a jp filco from europe ?

FILCO Zeros have Ultrapingomatic™ Simplified ALPS Type I "Fukka" switches – loud but decidedly meaty. Suitable for people living in a cave with no concern over the creation of noise pollution, and anyone who loves pounding away on a keyboard with feeling.

While you are still used to dome switches, the step up to the slightly stiffer Fukkas won't be as noticeable as switching up from Cherry mechanical switches which are very limp in comparison. Fukka switches are beautifully smooth and precise to type on, but ALPS switches in general are the most jarring of anything on the market as the tactile point is razor sharp and strong. Dome switches are typically stiff, but the tactile point is smoothed out. To get that smooth tactile feel without the rattle and scrape of cheap domes, go for either buckling spring (heavyweight) or Topre (light to mediumweight).

I'm still living in hope that a FILCO Zero 105 will be commissioned one day, but the demand for ALPS in the Western world is low, so I don't foresee it happening.
