Thanks trenza! Once I get the plate in, I'll be able to put it in a temporary V60 case (courtesy of eksuen) until the case I ultimately plan on using becomes available.

It's been one helluva project, with tons of hours put in, but it definitely feels rewarding!

Do you have like a making stuff together thread or somewhere with a project log? I'd love to check out the full process.

I've been taking pics of the entire process so I can post a build-log, but I've not been sure if I should wait until it's done or to update as I go. What do you think?

I'm ok waiting, I'm just interested to see what kind of work it required.

I'm ok waiting, I'm just interested to see what kind of work it required.

I can definitely tell you it's not for someone without dedication. It was hell! Mainly because the sockets that work for Alps are bigger than the switch mounting holes, so I literally had to bore out every single one. I bought a dremel drill press just for this purpose and it worked well. Furthermore, the Duck Eagle PCB doesn't have as many layouts for Alps as it does for MX. At first, I was going to settle with that, albeit with disappointment, but then I said screw it, I'm not going to settle, and so I drilled out positions for EVERY MX position on the board and then mounted the sockets. I didn't realize that the copper layer would contact the sockets and so many of these positions did not work until I went back and made sure the copper ground plane was not touching any of the sockets. Some of these positions needed to be reinforced with epoxy as well.

It is definitely not as easy as slipping in a socket and being done with it. Especially since Duck's PCBs have frustratingly terrible durability when it comes to pads. Just putting the sockets in caused some pads to lift.

This would be much easier with MX, as those sockets can fit without any drilling.

A huge amount of time went into hand drilling (with a pin vise) the bottoms of every linear switch for LED legs to slip through as linear Alps still does not contain holes for the LED legs on the switch's bottom housing unless it came from the factory with an LED. I also took the time to lubricate every spring for each switch in order to kill the horrendous ping that Alps always tends to have.

Overall, I've poured 30+ hours in this already, but I think the hard part is pretty much done. Now it's just getting the carbon fiber plate to mount the switches, putting it in a case, and throwing caps on! Cherry stabs will work with the recent DCS Alps caps. :D

Did I mention that I grinded the flanges off of 480 2x5x7mm LEDs this morning? :P

Square LEDs just look so right with Alps switches.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I dig the look of that mat, haha. Do you mean that you're using it as a dampening sheet in between the PCB and the case, or are your resting the board on it?

Ever since I've been using my desk, I've had my boards on some kind of rubberized mat, so I have no idea what they'd feel or sound like on an exposed hard surface.

It is thick enough to create a damping layer. I hope it can deliver a better feeling (or not  :)))

I *think* the dampening layer is used to either eliminate ping or to dampen the bottom-out of PCB-mounted switches. If you experienced ping before you might find that this helps, but I don't expect you'll feel much difference in the keystroke since it looks like your switches are plate-mounted. But I may be wrong! Definitely worth a shot either way.

I add a Zelio tactile with trampoline mod to my space bar in one of my GON Nerd60; it gets all the hollow sound out of the space bar, now it has a very solid feeling. I like it. I made the trampoline mode with a small piece of 50A White Rubber O-Ring, I am considering to add the same to the enter and to the backspace keys.

This weekend I soldered resistors on my NerD60 [CTRL]ALT , it was the first time I've done that, for the first row my hand was shaking like hell :)) After I got the hang of it it was really easy, and no fancy soldering station just a good iron. It took a hour :)
Added purple/pink LED's on the bottom row, waiting for the rest of the LED's , I want a RAINBOW 60% :)

Anyway it was fun and I plan to do next my B.face
P.S: The LED's are installed inside the switch, this way I can still open the switch and also the light is warmer and less intense. Can't wait to get the whole board done

I have to admit that I was impressed by my performance too  :)) The secret was to organise everything, I've had all resistors ready aligned for pick and place, a good tweezer, good light. Placed a drop of solder on one pad for all the rows and after that it was just a matter of setting a constant pace. After each row I tested if the LED's work. I used an angled 1mm tip on the iron.
It was pure fun, I've always been afraid of those tiny buggers.

SMD soldering always intimidates people, but it's not half as bad as it might seem! You are definitely right when you say that organization is the secret of doing something quick and with quality! That goes for things like switch tuning as well. :)

Placed a drop of solder on one pad for all the rows and after that it was just a matter of setting a constant pace. After each row I tested if the LED's work. I used an angled 1mm tip on the iron.
It was pure fun, I've always been afraid of those tiny buggers.

After seeing your success, I think you've motivated me to go and finish a board that I had started and never finished.
Now I only need to find the time...

This weekend I soldered resistors on my NerD60 [CTRL]ALT , it was the first time I've done that, for the first row my hand was shaking like hell :)) After I got the hang of it it was really easy, and no fancy soldering station just a good iron. It took a hour :)

1 hour to solder all the resistors, on your your first try! I'm impressed  :thumb:
I don't remember how long it took me to solder all those little bastards on my NerD60. But it felt like it took me forever, and I feel like it should look better (seeing how long it took)  :-[ :(
I have to admit that I was impressed by my performance too  :)) The secret was to organise everything, I've had all resistors ready aligned for pick and place, a good tweezer, good light. Placed a drop of solder on one pad for all the rows and after that it was just a matter of setting a constant pace. After each row I tested if the LED's work. I used an angled 1mm tip on the iron.
It was pure fun, I've always been afraid of those tiny buggers.

Glad I've inspired you :) Now I have to find time for my B.face :)) but I feel it will be soon, not this week as I have the graveyard shift at work and I lack the required concentration in the evening :(

Welcome to Geekhack!

Do you use the Trackpad with both hands?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
