Did you get a chance to try Kill-team? I think its a small format 40k game so might be good with limited models.
One thing I really dislike about the new 40k is all the command point, cards and special abilities that each unit has - seems like all this extra fluff for the sake of making things artificially "epic" but that just slows down games :O

I did but when I was playing it didn't have a rulebook per se. If I remember correctly they published a new set of rules shortly after but I haven't had a chance to try it since

Have played collected 40K on/off for 20 years. It was such a big part of my childhood I can never be truly free of it but I never have any time to make progress on my grey pile of shame, let alone play it.

Don't be so hard on oneself, there are bigger piles of unplayed steam games out there.

Hahahaha - I think I have it one step further than you, mine were all undercoated at least, so it was a lab rat army. Lucky for me, my nephew is getting into it, so now its his problem.
