Keyboard Dismantling/Assembly Wikis
« on: Tue, 23 February 2010, 08:42:49 »
Inspired by this this comment to my Gimme back my Big Backspace Gimme back my Big Backspace mod, I think geekhack needs a database/bunch/crapload of Wikis on how to dismantle various kinds of keyboards.

Some keyboards, like the Model F, are pretty straightforward. But the Model M is a little bit more tricky (you pretty much need a bolt mod afterwards).

Rather than just write 4 wikis for my four keyboards, I thought it would be good to ask for some input from geekhackendrum/fellow keyboard otakus/shameless individuals who view their keyboard porn at work.
(co-workers have already labelled me as a keyboard otaku...not that that's a bad thing)

Proposed Wiki Format

  • Introduction
    • Your place to blow hot air part 1

  • Detailed Description of the keyboard
    • Reference to a post/wiki/mod with more info

  • Warnings
    • Pain, shock, death, destruction, etc.

  • Tools you need

  • Dismantling Guide
    • More or less step-by-step
    • Littered with pictures

  • Assembly Guide
    • Only if particularly difficult
    • Step-by-step for the not so obvious parts

  • Conclusion
    • Your place to blow hot air part 2

What's Needed (Suggestions?)
  • Title format (needs to be as descriptive as possible)
  • Anything to add/remove/change to the proposed format
  • Should there be one super wiki or an ass ton of wikis (or perhaps a subforum)
  • How to cut down on duplicate guides (keyboards that are the same but different switches)
  • A sticky of sorts describing the dismantling wiki format
  • Volunteers (or groups of volunteers per article) to write wikis (cause I don't have as many keyboards as webwit)
  • Perhaps a photography guide for those of us who suck/have no skills/crappy camera (e.g. yours truly)
  • Something I missed
I have 4 boards I can write guides on. But I'm sure there are geekhackers who know a lot more about the Model M and F than I do.

If there isn't any general consensus on the title and such, I'll setup a poll.

Ideally these wikis should be descriptive enough, so mod howto posts, can just point to them, rather than having to rewrite the same dismantling guide over and over again.

I take requests for making keyboard converters (i.e. *old keyboard* to USB).
