I love the contrast of crossing the border. In all of my experiences, American border patrol = complete and utter power tripping douchers. Canadian border patrol = helpful sweethearts who you'd love to share a beer with.
I don't think I've had a pleasant time any of the times I've crossed.
-Given a dirty look for saying I was going to Toronto to see "the city" (we literally had no plans aside from the campground we stayed at - entirely improvised trip)
-Hassled for trying to cross the bridge at Niagara at night on foot to see the falls from Canada (absurdly common thing to do)
-Car ripped apart coming back to US through Sault Ste Marie because apparently going to ON to meet someone you met on a keyboard forum is suspicious ) (lol I'll give em that one)
Also, are the guards the nationality of the country you're entering? Right?
Ohhhhhh boy that doesn't sound fun. I understand it is their job to identify concerns/be suspicious but it'd be nice if they had a manner or two. I'm generalizing of course.
My highlights includes:
- Our car had 4 asian women & 2 white men. It was suggested that the men were human trafficking. The women were asked all sorts of questions, they didn't even look at me. My girlfriend was driving the car! Not that that's proof against, but really?
- Someone in our vehicle forgot to sign their passport. "Sorry, can I sign it now?" Apparently that really set the guard off, so our vehicle was searched.
- "What kind of firearms are you traveling with today?" "Uhhh none."
I can only assume the guards are the nationality of the country you're entering.
