[IC] 45-ATS Keyboard - Shipping
« on: Tue, 09 April 2019, 20:23:32 »
Group Buy Page: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=103907.0

Welcome (back) to the Interest Check for the 45-ATS.
I've been away for a while.

Sorry about that.

Announcements

Aluminum prototypes have arrived and all is well, minor adjustments are being made. Working on pricing and GB date. ;) (Dec, 5 2019)

Ortho has been ditched for this board, sorry guys. I felt that with more and more ortho options hitting the market I'll be keeping this closer to what I had in mind for it. (P.S. Buy The Ave.)
As of right now looking to be 50 public slots with a combination of FCFS and raffle, 5 saved for auction.

Layout

Details
The 45-ATS is a layout I dreamed up when I was between my JD45 and KBD19X.
This board is a topmount design and rocks a 6 degree typing angle.
There will be no brass weight on this board and will only be produced in aluminum. For now.
Colors are on vote but guaranteed [E-White],[Black or Grey],[Silver].

Renders
These are the most recent renders that represent this keyboard.
I've learned a lot about case design since I started this and I thought some changes needed to be made.
While I was there, I thought I would change some of the aesthetic.
I rounded up the corners, made the front height lower if everything works out. Should be about 17mm.
LED indicators added.

VOTE AGAIN FOR COLORS HERE (BECAUSE I NEED EMAILS OOPS):
Interest Check Google Form

To do list:
Gauge new interest on colors to see if scope has changed (also because I forgot to collect emails last time lol).
Get artwork for PCB finished.
More renders.
More hype.
More teasing.

I like the idea of the indicator lights in between, really helps set a personality for the board, especially with basic colors. IE green LEDs to go with terminal, or a nice 3 color with beige. Plus, what's not to love about artisan slots on a board :raughs:

Honestly, I'd prefer it had one more column. having a single column on a layer annoys me more than being forced to have several like with typical ~40%
Still, very nice!
I long for the day when I find a beamspring. (At a not insane price)

I love the layout. Offer a hot swap option and Via Configurator support, and I'm good to go. Navy blue would be a great color option, and I know you're a fan of the nice dark red, as I am. Nice job on the preliminary design, sir!

Great design!

One comment, it looks like your plate mounting positions will result in a very rigid plate feel, which could defeat the purpose of top mount unless you go with brass (which is super rigid anyway) or something like PC or PBT (which is flexy no matter how you mount it).

I'm specifically looking at the mounting tab directly between the spacebar switch cutouts, and the two tabs very close together in the bottom right corner, although those are probably OK because they're under the arrow keys.

The way I see it, a plate can flex in two principal directions: "hotdog" (the front and back fold up to meet each other) and "hamburger" (the left and right fold up to meet each other). Since plates are generally mounted on the front and back, you generally don't have any "hamburger" flex, and any that arises is probably undesirable edge flex, unless the plate is a really flexible material like polycarbonate. So what you have left is "hotdog" flex, which in theory should be pretty consistent across the row, especially on the home row. My fear is that adding tabs on the sides of the plate (instead of just front/back) will impede this "hotdog" flex and defeat the purpose of top-mounting. OIf course, any flex will be less accentuated in a 40% than in a bigger keyboard (and again it probably doesn't matter at all with brass).

On the flipside, having mounting tabs on the edge could reduce resonant metallic sounds from the plate by preventing it from vibrating as freely.

Obviously this is quite a bit of speculation, but IMO it's worth thinking about. Hopefully there will be a prototype made (maybe 3d printed + cheap alu plate?) so this can be refined before the GB.

Edit: w/ respect to the options in IC poll, I would much, much prefer a "budget" all-aluminum, no-weight design. If the Brutal60 can be $200, this can be $150 +extra for brass plate and +extra for fancy case material like polycarbonate or all-brass. I really don't like the value of being premium for premium's sake. If the brass weight really adds something to the design, then include it. If not, then it's just as much of an afterthought as some kind of half-baked gasket mount. FR4 is also a very nice cheap plate option; you can still fancy it up by putting (lead-free) plating around the switch cutouts like in the No1.

Also a half-plate option could be very interesting here.

I think I would like to see it with one more column but overall I love it. I don't care about PC or Brass versions at all, but a Brass weight would be cool.

LED indicator lights above the arrow keys would be sweet as well.

Looking forward to see how this progresses.

So glad to see this making it to the IC stage!

Indicator lights would be awesome, in terms of the mounting points, that might be something lit to look into.

I’m not a big fan of the split space being asymmetric, I think a 2.25u and 2.75u side by side looks strange. I’m not sure how much it goes against the design philosophy or how it will effect the PCB layout, but what about making the split space be 2x 2u keys? Add an additional 1u to the right side, and then it gets some nice balance (imo). Alternatively, make it 2x 2.25u keys for split, and have 3x 1.25 on either side.

Loving all of this. Could care less about a brass weight. Brass plate would be nice. LEDs are a super nice touch. PC would be nice since it’s afforable, at least I think so.

One more "feature request" from me -- maybe offer 2.75/2.25 split space in addition to 2.25/2.75. That will make the spacebar split centered under B between F and J.

I like it.  I thought the minivan might be my only 40%, but this could change my mind.

What happened to the question mark though?

The "Layout options" layout is very different, at least in terms of keys, than the keyboards you show.  For example, the key to the right of L changes.

Well really, it will be QMK, every key can be whatever you want it to be when you program it. It seems many people like colons where they belong. i, on the other hand, like quotations there because it's used more frequently.

One more column wouldn't really hurt that much, and it saves tons of hassle with designing layers. Other than that not a fan of premium addons for premium's sake and overkill pricing, so KISS and I'm in ;-)

In my opinion I think that two columns to the right is branching too close to the mini 1800 that you should see and IC for here from a friend of the 40s discord. I think with layering 1 row is the correct choice for both aesthetic and practical purposes.

I don't think so. I'll be designing the PCB and I just don't think I'm at that level yet. This is, after all, my first board project. I can't say it won't happen for sure but I would not place any bets on it.

Oh, you misunderstood. I didn't mean making the 3-key block on the right 6-key, I meant adding one column to the alpha block. That way, you don't have to omit anything while mapping basic characters...

I understand what you're saying, now.

I considered this when I was mapping this together. I think that moving into that area, that's too many keys. With DSA (or any uniform profile) allowing any key placement I think 45s go really far considering how much some people get done with 40s. A 50, I think, is too oblong. Width wise, the TMO50 occupies as much space as a THE50 not accounting for the bezel yet incorporates almost an entire numberpad because the THE50 uses a 40-base.

Just my take on it.  :D

Additional note: this 45-style makes it so that there are just enough keys between tab and enter for 0, 1-9 too. Also intentional.

Loving the design! I'd prefer no hotswap as it tends to have a few compromises, like north facing switches and the PCB needing some support to work with top mount. +1 on the Ortho and indicator lights. Overall very excited to see where this goes!

This could very easily be the board to fully get me into 40's/50's. I thought 60% was a stretch for me, but this board looks great!

Love the layout, status LED's would be cool, but I don't mind if they are not present.
Is there any chance that you add ALPS support?

Led indicators will be happening.

In order of priority of features: Ortho > Hotswap > Alps.

For Ortho, it might be possible to fit both stagger and Ortho on to the same PCB though I feel using hybrid footprints on the PCB would result in overlapping footprints making it not possible and would also mean no hotswap.

Splitting the PCBs would mean I could do hotswap for both configurations.

Splitting the PCBs and having Alps support means no hotswap and now we have 2 PCBs and 3 plates.

Theoretically I could make a THIRD PCB that is MX and Alps and a FOURTH PCB for Alps ortho..? Along with a third plate.

I'm not so sure I'm ready for that as my first GB and I also haven't tested for demand of it. You are the first to mention. So likely, no Alps.

For the Ortho, I'm ok with no Alps and no hotswap, but that may be a minority opinion. Perhaps a poll is needed?

Thanks for your answer :)

You don't need to make a special plate for ALPS, there's a hole that fit MX and ALPS as seen in the Pearl keyboard, but I understand your concerns.
I do like ortho as well, but for this layout I'd rather get staggered. What I don't like is hotswap, like some more in the thread, but yes it is understandable and polarising.
Maybe you could run a poll?

Honestly there's a lot to love here:

- 3 modifiers on the left → Mac users will be thankful for this.
- There's room for the Quote sign. Hiding such a frequently-used key (for English at least) under a layer never makes sense to me.
- I can see people mapping the "$185 Artisan" key to Forward Slash + Question Mark. Still close enough to the Shift key.
- Split spacebars yes! All smol keyboards need them.

Practical AND aesthetic? Count me in.

Don't you love 40-50% boards? There's something about them. They can be practical but I don't need that justification behind everything I buy. I like them because they're small--cute. They feel nice in the handle too, when you're shuffinling your tiny board around all the newfound deskroom from downsizing.

They make good shelf object too. Got a small shelf? Man, are these things perfect for it when they're not in use and still enough room for that 7th Pop! figure.

Here, today, I am interest checking for one of those. It goes by the name of 45-ATS.
Let's get into that name.

Currently, I run a JD45. It's nice. Really nice:

Clacky ✓
Smol ✓
Shiny ✓
Cute ✓
Compatible with most 40s kits ✓
Has the one key between L and Enter to put quotes on ✓
question mark is in the right spot (put it on tap for right shift)✓

On the other hand here's what's missing:

Arrow keys ×
Dynamic style×
Top Mount ×

The minivan is one of the few keyboards that went as far as to fit arrow keys onto such a small layout but at a cost. With the arrow key layout the question mark must be moved over or to another layout. This makes it hard to transfer that muscle memory over to something like a work keyboard, or a laptop keyboard. The nice thing about 45s is that most all punctuation can be on the top layer.

As for "dynamic style," think HHKB, think Compact 1800. Technically, the full 60% board and 96key style boards, respectively, are more practical than their counterpart. The full 60 fills in space with more keys, and the 96 key does the same thing while occupying less space. So then why resort to the alternatives? Plain and simple: they look better. The silhouette of a HHKB and 1800 layout are very attractive (to me) as opposed to the alternative. Like the layout or not, the HHKB is very attractive so the reason for adding the arrows and "macro keys" to this board is not only for the sake of functionality. It's also in the name of fashion.

And lastly, of course, we all love top mount. I feel I don't really need to explain that point.

So wrapping together some of my favorite features of my boards, I bring you the 45-"And Then Some"

Where it's at in the design process?
As of 4/25 I am done with the semester and will have more time to work on this. I have started the PCB design which, once completed, will finalize the case design.

What's been decided?

  • There will likely be no full brass/poly version of this board unless it somehow becomes super popular.

  • There will be no RGB on this board. We're keeping it clean.

  • I know I want a brass plate option, multiple finishes.

  • 6 Degree typing angle.

  • Top Mount, 3-piece.

  • QMK-- I can't imagine making a keyboard for this hobby and in this size that isn't QMK. Don't worry friends. :)

What's under consideration still?

  • Split space sizing options--thinking something closer to the minivan.
The proportions of the 225-275 layout can be a little unsightly and smaller space bars will be nicer for some that like to run no stabilizers.

  • Brass weight--but I would prefer for this to be something that is more affordable.

  • Matching 4x4 macropad to buy when this drops or save it for later. It will be called the ATSM. I will let you guess what that means.

  • Hotswap PCB: with nothing but a few bottom row layout options this is under consideration for offering a hotswap PCB option.

  • Additional plate material options.

  • Jazzing up the bottom case a little more.

  • Ortho PCB and Plate option: I was recently approached with the idea of offering an ortho option for the board as it would occupy the same footprint.
This would involve offering a whole other PCB or meshing it similarly to how the mechmini did as well as offering an additional plate.
    (Attachment Link)
    (Attachment Link)

  • LED indicator holes between the alphas and the 3-button cluster or just keeping it clean.

    (Attachment Link)
Just an idea I mocked up quickly to show the concept

What colors did you have in mind?

The classic Silver-Black-Grey to keep it simple for anyone looking for neutral colors.
In addition to that I want at least one less common color (namely navy blue, but other options will be on vote).
Now this doesn't mean it will be limited to one extra color; being new to group buys I'm not sure of the ups and downs that come from requesting so many colors for a buy of such small quantity. I will do my best!

Chiming in, if you're gonna offer a separate plate for ortho, might as well have it with separate PCB. It'll result in less "swiss cheese" and a cleaner build.

I'm most likely in for a staggered board, whether solder or hotswap, though hotswap split space would be nice ;)

Absolutely love the design of this board.

As far as colors it would be neat to see e-white or something similar but even without that I'm absolutely in on this board.

Also please no hotswap. If it has to be an option, please offer a normal soldered PCB as well.

Sorry for the silence. Come summer break from university, I thought I would have more time though I've found a lot of things to do (outside) this summer and have been neglecting this project a bit especially after picking up the rendering gig I have for the keycaps people of this community. To be honest I've just been stuck on the PCB and need to reach out to some other people about putting this together. I'll admit, this isn't a fast IC, I'm not like some people of this community that can proposed and wiz to GB in 2 months.. whattya gonna do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here are a few things I've decided:

There will be indicator LED's which will be 3mm soldered-in diodes. There will be holes, I don't care much for the microdot aesthetic.
I am looking to add a rotary encoder knob to the upper right of the board (top of the 3-stack of keys)
I am pretty much set on this being a solder-board. Elitism aside, I just prefer it.
REALISTICALLY, this is going to have to be a limited buy (thinking 50) though I'm considering offloading the QC to a vendor to increase the number.
Knocking off some mounting points and might round up the corners by a few more millimeters.

Sorry I'm so slow everyone  appreciate all of the interest. I'll deliver. Just.. not right now.

A rotary knob sounds great. I think you can combine the footprint for a rotary knob with a regular switch, so you can choose if you want the knob or not.

Similarly to a planck, the footprints are able to overlap, making it optional. :)

Hey just take your time don't worry. It'll be good for everybody's wallet, you're not on the clock. As long as you're not completely giving up on the project it's fine.
And you know the saying, "A delayed GB will eventually be good but a rushed GB will always be bad".

As someone who isn't comfortable with ortho, I find this to be one of the very few staggered boards smaller than 60% that I'd actually be comfortable using.  Personally, I like hotswap, but I also like the split spacebar option, and I don't know if that would be offered on the hotswap PCB.  (I know lots of people here like to solder, but with so many switches available these days, I really love being able to change switches as often as I want).

Hello everyone, I have put in for prototype PCBs and 3D print cases. Looking to be about 2 weeks before all of that gets in. Then some adjustments can be made followed by a further prototype with aluminum.

Things that are in stone and changes I made:
Ortho option for this board is being dropped. Maybe next time.
Some plate mount positions have been moved.
Corners are a bit more rounded, and the front height will be shorter, around 17mm if all works out.
Rotary encoder footprint added to top part of right column. (Can be MX switch or encoder available on all pcbs)
For the layout, the 225-275 spacebars have been flipped to be 275-225 to center the space bars around GH
QMK

Things to note:
I will not have ballpark price and color options until aluminum protos are put in for.
As of right now, looking to be a buy of 50 slots with a variety of methods to procure spots. Similar to Bauer group buy.
There will be future rounds.

If you can manage it, try to find a way into the 40s discord. Updates and chat about this board all happen there.

I'm pretty sad the ortho option is going away, which was the main reason I was interested in this board.
Well, I guess I can always make my own handwired version out of lasercut acrylic.

Sorry about that. The interest in ortho was not lacking by any means but for the sake of progression in this project, it's being ditched. Perhaps in future rounds. Check out the Sexyback by Ziptype, or The Ave by The Royal. Both solid options.

Not super particular. Hoping later November right now. The prototype PCBs are currently under production. once those are in I can make sure it all fits away in the 3D print case I have in hand then I can order Aluminum prototypes. While those are being made I will be working on GB logistics, determining final colors, etc. Please join the 40s discord to discuss further as things come in. We talk there frequently about this.

PCBs have been received and are functioning and fitted to 3D print case.

Aluminum protos have been ordered. Should be 16 days lead time and shipping to see those in.

I'm absolutely in! There is adequate space to substitute Rshift for ?/, correct? Sidenote: what size is that shift? Like 1.10u? Looks far too small for a 1.25u.

It's a 1.25, please reference it to the size of the other 1.25's on the bottom row.

Now that I have a great keyboard at home, I can’t use my MacBook Pro’s built in keyboard anymore. I’m ruined. I need something like the 45-ATS in my travel bag. Hope the prototypes look nice!

Any chance of opening up Google form responses for editing? I must’ve submitted a response a while back, but my preferences have changed.

Also, what are the board’s proposed dimensions, including angle?

I hope so too, they should be in end of next week if everything in on schedule.

Dimensions for this is 90mm x 288mm.

The angle is 6 degrees found in the IC header.

not trying to be rude or anything but this is likely to be around the same if not higher price point, since this is a limited run while Rama is mass produced.

Unlikely. Rama's design is much more complex than this requiring many more variations in materials with money invested in many of parts of what make Rama.. Rama. For instance, take a look at the Neuron GB:

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=102681.0

Before shipping was marked at $230.

I can't say anything right now as to the price of the 45-ATS but i can guarantee that it won't be $380 like the M65-B. We should know numbers about the 45-ATS after I find protos to be acceptable and can have a chat about numbers with the factory.
