Title: DealeXtreme HHKB Killer

Anyone wanna fill me in on this?

It is a "HHKB killer" if you perceive the HHKB's only advantage to be portability.

Personally, although I find short-throw, scissor switches fun to type on ocassionally, there is no way such a keyboard could replace my HHKB.

I often use my HHKB Pro 2 as my daily driver.  GREAT layout with near-perfectly-designed function layer.  Nice feel.  Useful detachable USB cable and built in USB hub.

Both are smaller then a "regular" keyboard.  That is where the similarity ends.

Yeah, it would be more appropriate to call it an Apple Keyboard Knockoff.

I mean, why is it good? Are the switches tactile? How does it compare to a cherry switch?

good because it's portable and cheap. does not compare to cherry/HHKBs whatsoever.

I prefer the Microsoft Arc , similar size/layout, wireless, a little more expensive than this.

This is what I would call it. This makes the similar Apple keyboard look just as overpriced as it really is.

Also, I'm assuming it's 2-kro. Right?
Title: DealeXtreme HHKB Killer
Post by: db_Iodine on Sat, 05 February 2011, 08:01:28
Like most domes and scissors, I'd say it's most likely 2-kro.

Scissors and domes aren't that different. Both immediately present the tactile bump to you, while mechanicals have a bit of travel before you get over the cusp.

I don't hate on scissors TOO much. What I really hate are those chiclet keys.

Scissors gonna scizz. Chiclets gonna chic. Haters gonna hate.

now you've got to put that in the geekhack wiki, it's now officially the "realforce killer"

Why the hell am I spending almost $300 on a Realforce when I could just buy that logitech for something like $50? I and many other geekhackers must be out of their minds to spend so much on a Realforce..

What are you referring to?

If you mean the page movements layered on the cursor keys with fn, Apple started doing that with the G3 Powerbooks, in 1998. It sucks because fn is on the far left, so you can't page through documents one-handed. On older Apple laptops fn was seen by the OS as a modifier, so you could at least fix that with uControl (http://gnufoo.org/ucontrol/) or fKeys (http://www.kodachi.com/software/fKeys/), but when it's handled in the keyboard, ain't no way.

If you mean the one-cap-for-two-keys thing, that is characteristic of the recent Apple chiclets, as yet another one of Steve Jobs' techniques to promote touch screen by making keyboards that are hardly any better.

Poorly pad printed keys? No, I wouldn't consider that much of a bonus.

This thread does remind me though that I need to retry one of those mini ML boards.

And indeed like iMav I often use the HHKBpro2/1 as a daily driver.

Hey, I bought one too to try it out, 18$ isn't a big deal. Lunar new year got in the way and I will probably receive it in like 4 or 5 months instead of 3, nice. Maybe I'm exaggerating things a bit.

I like scissors because they feel okay but are VERY quiet, what I need. Does it feel similar to the apple wireless keyboard*? I didn't like the feel of the apple wireless keyboard, though I like some scissors (those on my netbook are okay).

What about this scissor switch keyboard?  Does anyone have this?  Looks pretty nice for a slim 104 board.

Big ReverseL (often referred to as BigAss) enter and tiny backspace kills it, at least for me. Also Arial and that Rosewill logo on the spacebar.

Looks like those semi-chiclet/island keyboards that HP and Dell uses on some of their laptops. It feels almost like a island keyboard with the large keys and distinction, but without actually isolating the keys like an island keyboard.

this isn't about the kb, but rather about dealextreme. I've ordered from them in the past, but wow, i ordered a 2$ iphone4 dock, i think jan 20th... ish cuz i asked my fiancee if she wanted the iphone 4(verizon) and she said sure, it's cute. I just received it today, and while it's a pretty awesome dock, does a great job... wow i have never seen a 8week shipping period. Everything i've ordered on ebay from those chinese/taiwainese individual sellers take at most 2 weeks, usually 7days... but wow haven't had dealxtreme 8week wait!

I'm getting one from a UK ebay seller, and it's one that has the same colour scheme as an Apple one

Nonetheless, judging by the layout, it's the same keyboard.

For half the price of the Apple one, I can live with that.

Depends on the switch. Alps, for example, have a high-up tactile point.

The keyboard on my laptop which I don't really use too often anymore has been flaky for a while so I figured that this little keyboard would make for the perfect replacement. It does the job pretty well. You really can't go wrong for the price.
