Title: Starcraft Doubleshots!
Post by: Fwiffo on Wed, 09 March 2011, 22:02:21: All Starcraft keys are sold out! Interested parties should look to round 4 or beg somebody to buy their extras.

Round 3 is shipping. Several people have their keys, I'm still waiting on mine and will post a picture of all the different keys when I get mine. Everybody who has them says they are awesome, so bummer for you if you missed out.

These keys can be purchased with the 7bit voting system. Follow the directions in the Round 3 thread (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=13664) on how to vote/order (send votes as private messages to 7bit_vote (http://geekhack.org/private.php?do=newpm&u=6886).) I'm setting up order IDs for both Windows keys and Esc keys, and it seems that both sizes will be produced. Be aware that less popular size/race combinations will be more expensive.

The order IDs are as follows:

SCWINTERRAN
SCESCTERRAN
SCWINPROTOSS
SCESCPROTOSS
SCWINZERG
SCESCZERG
SCWINRANDOM
SCESCRANDOM

NOTE: These have changed because I was stupid and put a "2" in the IDs originally. Please re-submit your orders with the new IDs. You'll want to zero out your orders for the "2" versions too.

For example, if you just want one Zerg Esc key:

If you want Brotoss and you want both sizes of keys, including a pair of the Windows keys:

These are just examples, you can order however many of whichever keys you want.

The logos are somewhat simplified and adjusted in proportion from the originals because of the constraints on the process, which basically dosen't allow features smaller than 0.5mm.They may have to be adjusted further. At the final size of 9.04x10.84mm, I think they will look fine.

Sorry about the lavender Zerg, they don't have purple. There are lots of shades of yellow, blue and red, so the other colors are flexible. Here are the colors we have to choose from:

The colors will be RA for Terran, YK for Protoss, RCJ for Zerg and BFP for Random.

If that meets the double shot requirements it'll look absolutely stunning with a red on black color scheme.

I REALLY like the idea of Windows keys replacements actually. Escape could be something like an SC or just he II from the SC logo. I like like like.

They need to be 0.5mm spaces between them when shrunk down to the final size (9.04mm x 10.84 mm) It would probably work if I deleted about a third of them and spaced the remainder out, but that will take some time to make look good.

Also, the only purple Signature has is lavender. We'll have to decide if that's good enough, or we should go with red or something.

Indeed it is.

I quite like the Windows key replacement, provided these are the standard Filco profile, as I have more than enough ESC key replacements :p

And I'd probably be down for a full set, provided the pricing is in the sane land - $4 or so per keycap I think, though I've no clue what to expect at the moment. What I do know is I've spent a decent sum key caps lately.

Random players that understand more than cheese often have a very unique and insightful of the game. I see far too many players well into Diamond that have no clue how the other races play.

Plus the die is just baller looking.

Would love either of these color schemes for the Toss key as well.

Window-sized (1.25) replacement keys pref, but more escape keys never hurt:D Totally in for 2x of each race

wow i dont know which one to go with, i originally play zerg but ive been practicing protoss recently! Anyway great great idea!

The decals are suitable without much tweaking, and were the original art I had for all three races. But since I upgraded the Zerg and Terran I do plan on playing around with the regular Protoss logo this weekend to see if I can get it to work well in the restricted, 1-color format.

It also has the old Terran shield instead of the hawk-dude. I think the current Protoss decal is pretty nice, but if you're concerned about the set matching or being thematic, this could be good.

That toss logo looks a lot better, I'd prefer that if someone can "svg-ize" it.

YY is a good call. It's tricky to spot the subtle differences without having the actual samples in front of me and under white light. My looking at a digital photo on a mediocre laptop screen is already two or three points of compounding interpretation, so I'll default to your eye.

Don't mistake there reaction for anything other than rabid envy. You might want to pick them up one windows sized key a piece just to taunt them.

BTW you guys that have voted already, are you getting email updates? I haven't gotten one since Thursday, I'm really curious to know how many votes these have.

Everybody make sure to order some extras for your friends, presents for your favorite pros and casters, tchochkes to trade at LANs, tourneys, etc. The more we order, the cheaper they'll be.

I also have not received statistics in a few days, but I believe the e-mail voting statistics will resume when 7bit is back from his much deserved vacation.

I guessing the "automated" system decided to give everyone the silent treatment as it slowly gains awareness ala iRobot-style and can only hope 7bit comes back in time to beat it into submission before it knows too much.

Unless we start getting hundreds of interested parties, I don't think it will be practical to produce both. It will be probably be windows keys in the end because people will want to get matching pairs.

There are actually several different icons that could be used for each of the races and the shield seemed to be a popular choice. I don't know if one is more "official".

I personally prefer the shield, but I'm 'toss. Do the Terrans in the crowd prefer the Wings of Liberty eagle?

Again, I'll know more when 7bit gets back, because he's already had lots of communication with Signature. For all I know, producing different sized keys doesn't require any additional machining so we could produce both sizes at no additional cost. Or maybe it's cost prohibitive to produce custom art keys with less than 100 orders. I just don't know.

If Signature happens to have a nice purple that somehow isn't in the sample color ring, I'd like to use that for Zerg instead of lavender.

If we request keys to be made and people don't make a profit off reselling them (i.e. - iMav and 7bit in this case) they probably won't mind. However if we were to put them on eBay or something and try to sell them there could be an issue there.

I say legitimate case because anyone can try to press charges for anything, they just get thrown out. Until Blizzard starts making their own caps, low batch quantities means no trademark dilution and limit the distribution showing that it is not for personal gain. Also it is made abundantly clear in the forums that you are giving Blizzard the credit for the Logo and just want to rep. their product because you like it.

Indeed we do my friend. I ordered some blank purple KBC PBT keycaps from qtan's group buy, I'm going to use them for most of the Zerg hotkeys. Then all I'll need is round 4 of the doubleshots so I can get myself the Zerg F10 key to complete my Zerg keyboard! I'll probably do 2 Zerg Windows keys as well.

I would contact them and ask. You might need to get some sort of identification about the mold from 7bit but SP is very friendly. Prices can be high for low quantity orders but you can definitely try.

I am not going to be part of organizing anything for the next round. :sorry: If somehow the SVG files needed changes, I could take care of. But since they turned out freaking awesome in the last round I don't think any adjustments are necessary.

Me too! No need to label the keys with the letter on the front though. That way they would look good for any layout, including custom key bindings.

Protoss - 15 Units | 15 Buildings
Terran - 14 Units | 15 Buildings

That way you can put a Nexus/CC/Hatch on like the 5 key or whatever you hotkey it to in game, and then your warp gates/barracks to the 4 key and so on lol

But this is a LOT of work though, hell I'll be happy with just a probe/SCV/Drone key cap that itself would look awesome on a keyboard ;D~

After reading more into SVG and how to make key caps, don't if its possible because of the details in the units/buildings, I mean I _think_ it's possible still with adjustments to the units/buildings but my skills at this is terrible so I wouldn't even know how to go about with it

Anyone have any insight on this or if anyone has done something like this to know if it's even possible with the units/buildings?

Yeah reading on how to making an SVG file does not seem easy at all, how 3 keys, a probe on a yellow key, a SCV on a red key, and a Drone on a purple key, and instead of using the entire model for the key cap we can use the silhouette/outline for it, not sure how that would look, maybe they would just look like a blob of black on a colour key. This is MUCH less work then my other idea and it could still look awesome ;D

Could do Blink too and any other that would work well in one color... this image just needs to be converted to .SVG (unless it needs to be a different size.) I think I need to find the Photoshop plugin for it. This on a red key would be sex imo. Or blue... hmm.

I would be in for some, it should be blue or yellow to match protoss's colour

My family is living in Hong Kong and may know some people in china. I'll have them ask around if they know anyone/where we can get them done. We may need to provide specs for the keycap profiles, since these factories probably don't specialize in keycaps. Chances of this happening soon are almost zero. So if you are desperate for a key, you will have to buy it for a large premium off someone else. Happy Hunting.
