one day I hope to have a real BS board

Get a Unicomp.

New, warranty, native USB, Windows keys, under $100. Certainly the best value out there.

+1 Fohat! I still have a 103 key UNI0446 PS/2 keyboard! Great Choice!

Do the keys on your Unicomp feel nice and crisp? I put some Unicomp VI keys on my 1986 and sometimes one or more of the keys feel like the spring isn't buckling right.

They feel just fine. I don't have those issues at all. Maybe you need to reseat your keys if you do.

Maybe they are just a bad batch then. I have reseated them multiple times and also switched back to the original keys. The originals work fine. The new ones work most of the time, but every so often, the J just won't buckle for a couple of presses and then is fine again. I think the little nub for the spring might be too short on the Unicomp stems.

I am writing a technical reference for Model F keyboards (actual state of the document can be found here: http://www.linux-tin.org/ModelFManual.pdf.
In this document, I am also showing the different variants of the Model F keyboards (2-21f). I already have 10 in there, but I am still looking for:
  • System/23 Datamaster Monoblock
  • System/23 Datamaster "Bezelmaster"
  • CS/9000 Keyboard
  • Model 200 '4704' - F62 Kishsaver, Original
  • Model F Displaywriter
  • 'Blue Button' Model F variants
  • F127, 4980 for IBM Series/1 minicomputer
The document will be released under a Creative Commons license and in case you are sharing those photos, you need to be ok with me taking those into the document.
Any help would be much appreciated

This Model F 122 was born on the second of May 1984.

It's very similar to the first sets of Models M with the bigfoot feet. Sharktastic calls them Type 1.

The big difference you can see here is that the Model F has a big thick black metal backplate, so it weighs a ****load.

Other than that, fundamentally it's not too dissimilar to a 122 key Model M. It uses the standard ISO layout, and is fairly pleasant. You guys may know that every major type of F and M type slightly differently.

If you've typed on an M before, but never on an F, it's very much the same thing but pingier, smoother, and lighter by almost inconsequential amounts.

If you've typed on an F before, but never on a 122, I'll say it feels very similar to an AT than an XT. Slightly quieter, slightly thockier, closer to an M in sound than other Fs. The feel is also close to an AT. It feels more solid, more buttery. Less light and rattley like the XTs and to an extent the 4704s.

My preference is for the light and rattley keyfeel of the XT, but with the sound of the Model M. I think this keyboard is a great happy medium for a lot of people, especially those like me who hate layers and want every key to be a shortcut.

That being said, it's not for me at this time. My desk is too small, and, while for the price of this keyboard I could have upgraded my desk twice, it's just not something I'm prepared to do at the moment. I've currently got a great thing going with the Navless layout of the repro and the XT (although I do have a seldom used layer for the repro).

So anyway, those of you looking to complete a Model F collection, here's what you need to know:

It's a big Model F AT.

Those two keyboards look boss. FWIW Shark, I'm still considering the F122 offer.

I didn't ever really want a black M13 but now I feel like I should get one to compliment my pearl. Hmm.

Nice, is the Mini M as good as the original SSK ?
Technically speaking, it's better - it's got an improved matrix design that allows 6-10 keystrokes together without blocking. TLDR: its matrix is very oversized for what it needs to be, allowing them to choose only the members that are unlikely to block with each other as functioning keys, effectively hiding many if not all instance of the membrane's 2KRO in use. More about it (and the Mini M at large) on my website: https://sharktastica.co.uk/articles/minim_prototype. Bear in mind, my unit is a prototype though.

In terms of other aspects, it's a bit subjective. It's lighter than an SSK and has Windows keys, which is a pro or con depending on your outlook or needs. It's a bit more flexible than an SSK, but it's much more rigid than past Unicomp keyboards. Overall, it's an excellent keyboard. As long as you're fine with black, at $125, it's a far better value proposition than an OG SSK.

Pretty satisfied with the new Unicomp SSK so far.  I've owned their EnduraPro and a Classic Trackball for many years.  They work fine, but as most of you know the quality of the cases and key legends are rather poor.  This new SSK is a vast improvement.  It is certainly not as solid as an original IBM SSK (I have a couple of those as well), but the fit and finish is closer to what I'd expect from a brand-new keyboard.  Some of the bottom edges are rather sharp, but the gaps and texture is consistent.  I originally thought the USB A connector was an odd choice, but the fact that it is locking makes up for that.  It's nice and solid.  Maybe there is no suitable locking B connector?

If the "New Model M" is of similar quality, I would have no qualms recommending Unicomp to more people.  That said, this new SSK is a better value proposition than their model M.  A real (but used) Model M can still be had for "New Model M" money.

Unfortunately, finding a black M13 is pretty much the only option. Unicomp used to sell WoB keycap sets but ran out last year.

If the "New Model M" is of similar quality, I would have no qualms recommending Unicomp to more people.  That said, this new SSK is a better value proposition than their model M.  A real (but used) Model M can still be had for "New Model M" money.
For the most part, the New Model M is the same quality. It's physically the exact same fit and finish, but most will have slightly older and less refined keycaps. Certainly, still better than ones from 5 years ago though. I anticipate that once Unicomp burns through any older stock they have pilled up, all their keycaps will eventually equalise in quality. Due to the unique legends they have, the Mini Ms are guaranteed to have their latest keycaps by contrast.

IBM 5576-C01 Japanese Keyboard TrackPoint II
I thought that keyboard was not a buckling spring. I thought it had the yellow alps type keys? Interesting.

None of the 5576 family used yellow Alps, as far as I know; 5576-001 and 002 were Alps SKCP (plate spring), 003 and A01 were Brother buckling springs, and B01, B05 and B06 were rubber dome.
