[IC] Teal 40Pad
« on: Wed, 15 January 2020, 10:22:02 »
Hello geekhack!

Tim from Teal Technik here. Many might not be aware of us but we are a tiny business in the community for almost a year(tealtechnik.com). I am a day time software developer nighttime keyboard enthusiast. Want to see if we can bring a new option to the community.

This is a preliminary IC for the following design. We wanted to get feedback on our plans before moving forward with prototyping.

The basic idea for the Teal 40Pad is a fairly standard 40% Keyboard with a numpad, supporting split RShift, split Space (3u), 6u space and split 0.

Layout:

The proposed PCB specs are:
  • Open Source - Designed by u/Gondolindrim
  • Underglow (no PKRGB at this time)
  • USB C
  • Indicator Lights (placed vertically between numpad and modifiers)
  • MX switch compatibility
  • ARM Processor
  • Solderable (no hotswap at this time)

Also including latest features provided by Gondo’s designs:
  • Overcurrent and overvoltage protections
  • ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection on data lines
  • TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) on the bus voltage power feed
  • Isolation from MCU and bus power rails by means of a pi-filter
  • PCB will be open-sourced and released under the Acheron Project

For the case:

Sandwich case option
  • PCB, Switch and base

Layered Acrylic case - Designed by u/Jolimon
  • High profile
  • Stepped design - top 2 layers stepped inwards
  • Small 3 degree incline built in to case
  • Rounded corners
  • Color Options - clear, smoke, black, white, red
  • Optional 2mm foam dampening layers that go between the plate and the PCB

Possible 3rd option for a 3d printed case but we would have to probably choose between this and acrylic to keep it simple.

Other info:
  • PCB design will start once initial IC is complete
  • Pricing target - at or under $200
  • US only
  • Estimated Dates
  • IC 1 - January 2020
  • Prototyping - Feb - Mar 2020
  • IC 2 - March 2020?
  • GB - TBD 2020
  • Shipping - TBD 2020?

I think the bottom row leaves a lot to be desired. Two 3u spacebars isn't very common in keycap sets.

I gotta agree with this. I like the idea though (and would like it even more if the numpad was on the left).

I'm a fan, could def mess with the bottom row and I couldn't care. I just like that it's Planck-like in size (not ortho), but offers an actual numpad. I could use this for development much more comfortably.

I think a 2-1.25-2.75 combination would cut it?

3U is not my style either. I also think that we could support 6.25 or even 7u spacebar?
A pessimist will tell you the cup is half empty. An optimist will tell you the cup is half full. An engineer will tell you it's exactly twice the size it needs to be.

Yes i originally looked through all the options and had a swiss cheese bottom row so i cut it down to these for minimal cheese. We can definitely explore other options for bottom row.

Generally a 225-275 spacebar would be great, as you see these commonly in spacebar kits and are always available as shifts in a base kit if that alternative is needed. Minivan 2.25-2.00 was decent too. Whatever can make the bottom row look nice and be common sizes.

3u is for minila Keyboard (in general) which only ever calls for one. You'll generally see these with caps sets available through drop (and aren't GMK)

Ideally, the split in the bars will fall where G meets H

This, excited to see some renders/prototypes/etc. Filled out IC form. I don't know if acrylic has color limitations, but I'd love a dark navy option.

As far as the bottom row would something like this suffice to fix the spacebar issues:
