[GB] h87a LIVE NOW
« on: Tue, 11 September 2018, 22:03:28 »
h87a returns again, with both a SOUTH and a NORTH version - this is in reference to the spacebar stabilizer direction. Some cases need a north-facing to allow for the PCB to fit properly.

MOST keyboards will fit either. Check the plate of your keyboard to verify which you'd be better off with. The south-facing ones will have cutouts that extend below the switch cutouts, and the north-facing will have cutouts extending above the switch cutouts.

I have updated my compatibility list to reflect this, and showing which of my other PCBs fit in boards:

You must use screw-in stabilizers on AT LEAST the spacebar and 2.75 right shift.

I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS PCB WILL FIT YOUR CASE, even if it is listed as "probable" by the spreadsheet linked above. If you have doubts, wait until someone else with your case tries this PCB.

What does an "extended USB port" mod entail for the KMAC rows in the spreadsheet?

I was told that the KMAC board(s) have a USB port that extends further out than a typical a.87 PCB. Someone may correct me if that's not true.

So far at 31 sold including 5 dedicated to an Australian vendor - more than halfway to MOQ. Very nice showing after only two days.

Ah sure enoguh it looks like it, top is a Leeku 87 which I believe is a.87, bottom is a KMAC:

So the USB would be a little recessed into the case, not bad.

Thanks for the info, the pic helps a lot. Yeah I guess it'd be up to whether the case would allow you to plug into one if it's more recessed.

No physical reset switch - just short two pins on the PCB (for case compatibility)

Sorry for the dumb question, but does this mean I have to take the PCB out of the case to reflash it, or is there some sort of hotkey I can set up in qmk to put it into flash mode?

Not really well versed in qmk.

Yes - the default keymap has Fn + R as the "soft reset" hotkey within QMK. The pins are incase you need to do a "hard reset", and take the place of a switch.

Currently at 37 PCBs ordered.

We're at about 65 ordered

I've updated the design to better fit boards with no clearance for the outdent where the spacebar stab goes. A "downside" of this is that you have to use screw-in stabilizers for those two spots. I've also updated the spacebar and right shift footprints to allow the user to use either stab orientation - north or south. Twitch VOD of the process:

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/314800315

Will update the OP/product listing tomorrow, it's late af

Thanks to Creamy for the help/guidance on the stab "pears"  ;D

Unfortunately, no, there isn't anything yet.

This is also one of my biggest gripes with QMK -- I eventually found myself with enough QMK boards to make learning how to do everything "manually" worth it, but in most people's cases (yourself included) it's really much too complex. That being said, I think something is being worked on, but you'd need to inquire with folks like MechMerlin or Jack Humbert himself.

Aside from cloning, installing, installing dependencies, updating, reading the documentation, figuring out the learning curve, figuring out how to change the keymap, figuring out how to flash firmware, "oh, an error", googling how to fix errors, reading thread after thread on how to fix something so you can move one little tiny step forward to the next error..

Nah, it's all relatively easy and worth it just to move a switch around.

Sounds like I may have to grab one just to get comfortable with QMK and all it's idiosyncrasies.

The QMK Configurator (linked) is pretty good, and h87a is on there. I need to work with mechmerlin to get more layouts for the board on. You pretty much click and drag the keys you want, where you want them.

The code itself is pretty clean as well, and is clean to compile and use as long as you're just replacing keys. If that's all you're trying to do you shouldn't run into issues.

Halfway through the edits for the next/final version.

1. Edited outline (about 1-2mm smaller in all directions) and larger corner radii to better fit some boards, including Jane V2
2. Extend USB port about 1.3mm outwards for a better fit in cases (was too sunken in on some with the protos)
3. Changed diode package for less parts (same matrix, so QMK should be the same) and less cost.
4. Rerouting a bunch of it bc I can make it a bit tidier now

At over 150 ordered atm with a few vendors jumping on board to stock the PCB.

Reminder that this GB will close this Friday, Oct. 5, at-or-later-than Midnight EST.

Depends on how many you order - that should be normal for 2 PCBs. Note that's base shipping price (for one) + PP fee (described in the product listing) + additional price for second PCB packing/material/weight.

GB is officially closed. Pre order will open in a few days for $50/pcb. A limited number will be available (20-25 I think).

Thank you everyone for supporting this project!

May be a weird question, but I forgot to ask before I ordered: are the PCB-mount pin holes Cherry spec? I'm not sure if anyone's been adjusting them to fit the thicker Gateron/Zealio pins, but I'm planning on using Cherry PCB-mount and want a tight fit.

Also, do you know how thick the PCB will be?

I've tested the holes with Zealios and they're snug but the switches can be removed fine. Cherry PCB mount is a slight bit looser, but still snug.

Just FYI, the upcoming v2 switches from Zeal are supposed to have the slightly smaller Cherry-sized PCB mount pins.
