Title: What is the most useful piece of tech you have purchased lately (or ever)?
Post by: Kerpadge on Thu, 29 October 2015, 17:48:10
I recently picked up a USB drive with both a Type A and Micro connectors (one on each end). I've been getting way more use out of it than I thought I would. That's got me wondering, what useful tech have you purchased that you now can't live without?

Great topic! I am absolutely in love with my Bluetooth headphones. They really weren't too expensive, and they make all the difference in the gym. Not having to worry the damn cord getting caught on equipment makes the $80 seem like nothing :thumb:

I really wanted to pick up a pair of Bluetooth headphones when I was shopping for a pair in the Spring. I found it difficult to find a really nice pair that allowed for either Bluetooth or a cord depending on what I was doing. Sennheiser has a pair, but they're around $500 last time I checked. What kind do you have? How is the sound?

Most useful recent purchase is hasu's BT mod for the HHKB.

Makes it SO MUCH easier to take it everywhere I go. Both work and travel.

This really is the truth. I've been trying to resist the urge to buy a second one, since the 240gb drive I bought didn't last a week before I filled it up.

I really wish phones had integrated GPS when I was first learning to drive. I missed it by just a few years. Paper maps and drawing out routes for long drives was a pain.

How long does the battery on that usually last? I imagine the mobility is nice, but only if you don't have to charge it multiple times a day.

Supposedly around 10 hours but I have yet to test it myself.

I only touch my phone every 3 months...

My most useful piece of tech was gifted to me. It was a Kindle Touch that I've been using almost everyday for the past 4, 5 years? Fantastic little thing.

I went through many pairs of BT headphones before I found a pair that were light enough to stay in my ears while running. Plantronics BackBeat GO2. The sound is pretty good if you consider the fact that on a full charge they will play 3/4 volume for over 3 hours!

Honestly, a good looking analog watch with chronograph. I can still time workouts on it while watching others run. I can wear it to a nice dinner or business meeting. And it's always there so I can check the time, as being punctual is important to me.

Current wearing a Casio EF503D-1AV. Nothing super fancy, but it gets the job done and looks good doing it. It also plays homage to my favorite watch of all time. I wear it on a leather one-piece strap though.

For a long time, my Garmin Forerunner 610 was my useful tech. It kept the team running honest for pace and mileage. We could also make up new running routes and know how far we ran instead of just guesstimating. The 610 doesn't look as good in the office or at a meeting though....

Yep, I didn't realize how terrible corded headphones were until I bought my bluetooths, specifically for the gym and traveling. Night and day.

One thing that totally changed my room setup has been my audio mixer, allows me to mix inputs from my computer, TV, turntable and phone and have it output over my receiver. Perfect for me, and great for controlling volume while gaming.

Outlet covers that include USB ports on them. There was a sale on Amazon a while back so I snagged 5 or 6 of them. Now I have USB ports for charging devices everywhere in the living room and kitchen so guests aren't unplugging lamps and stuff trying to charge their phones.

As for a gadget that I've bought, probably my car GPS.  In addition to getting you out of tight spots when you make a wrong turn or have to take a detour or something, I find it really helps even when you sort of know where you're going.  Rather than having to pay attention to street signs as much, you can just glance at the GPS and know if it's time to turn or whatever.  I find it helps me keep my eyes on the road more.

If you broaden that question to include software and it doesn't have to be purchased, then hands down it's Virtualbox (or more broadly any virtualization software).  The ability to try any OS or any application you come across without having to mess around with test systems to be concerned with messing up your production system or accumulating Windows rot is incredibly liberating.  Want to take that new Linux distro for a spin?  Or maybe you need a particular application for a one off use but don't really want to install Java or something on your main system.  Or maybe you need to test out that new version of an app before your overwrite the old one.  Virtualization to the rescue every time.  Personally, I think it's been my biggest geeky discovery in the past several years (along with mechanical keyboards :p).

Wow, seriously? It's definitely not a voltage issue because they make a Euro model as well (although it is $30 more than the American one:)

side note - when using colons or semicolons the parentheses still goes on the outside, correct? My mind is conditioned to see it as a smiley face, so it looks wrong.

I think it does go outside, like with full stops. But yeahhh, we use 240V in the UK, but I guess I could get a converter. That one you linked doesn't ship to the UK from there anyway, which is part of the trouble I've been having.

Shouldn't matter if its a 230v one as we are the EU as a whole was meant to be harmonised? to 230v including us a few years back, I was looking into them before but they just cost too much to ship not worth £75 as of my time of looking :X

I put off buying one for years because the name made me think it was a vacuum not a blower. Finally I broke down and bought it anyway because of the positive reviews. When I first plugged it in and turned it on I was amazed and very happy.

You will save so much money and it works so much better. The cord is long enough I use it in lieu of a duster around my apartment, and for annual cleaning of the computer. Not just for keyboards at all.
I usually don't gush on products, but it paid for itself in about 4 months easy, and it was much sturdier than I'd anticipated.

I think the most useful was the ATEQ VT30.  Using it, I was the first in the world to figure out how to reprogram the TPMS sensors in the Suzuki Kizashi without the dealership.

Now everyone can do it because I discovered a trick while reading the FCC documents on the sensors that allows you to trigger the sensors even without a TPMS tool.  And everything I learned I posted online.  TPMS for everyone for free!  And it's actually even faster than with the dealership tool, lol.

So long as people remember to block the fans inside the case when using it. No one mentioned this before I bought mine and thankfully someone here did shortly after I posted about it. Can ruin fan bearings due to the high RPM caused by the power of the blower, which is why I now use a thin bamboo stick to prevent the fan from moving during operation.

LOL That second sentence gave me a laugh until, upon reading through your third paragraph, I realized it wasn't a joke; you're actually timing runners because you're a coach or similar. I was picturing Bubbles eating a doughnut while lazily lounging on a park bench, timing random joggers as they ran past.

You are correct--a nice watch makes the man. I am a casual collector of time-pieces, from German cuckoo clocks to calculator watches to metronomes.

Time keeps on slippin' slippin' slippin' into the future.

Not in order of usefulness:
  • Soldering station (tinkering and repairing things)
  • Multimeter (can even test my batteries lol)
  • Powerbank with 2x USB port (damn that thing is useful)
  • Arduinos, lots of them (you can do, repair, adapt so many things with them)
  • NAS (Data storage, management and sharing made easy)

What type of NAS do you have it you don't mind me asking?  My office is transitioning away from local storage in favor of cloud storage, so we have a couple nice Synology units that we are going to get rid of and I have already cleared it with management to take one home, as I would like to integrate it into a HTPC for my home.

Either way, to stay on topic I would definitely say SSD or if it counts, a small LED flashlight.

Oh cool, do you like the DSM UI on it?  I set a couple of the units up (most of them are 2-bay DS214+ models but the largest is a 5-bay DS1511+) and loved the UI of them and think that they would make great storage for an HTPC.  Also, HDD storage is so cheap now that even with a 2-bay model you could throw 2 x 2-3TBs in it for under $200 pretty easily, although upgrading to a 2.5" system might get a little more pricey.

The Synology UI is really nice. Setting audio server, NFS / SMB, quota, etc ... everything is so easy with a Synology. I'd love a 2.5" variant because of their small size

Wow, I didn't realize the 2.5" versions were that much smaller!  The DS214s that we have are relatively small but the DS1511+ is pretty big and kind of heavy, so the 2.5" version would help to shrink the units with more bays without sacrificing that much space.

I use my digital calipers a lot when building stuff.

+1 My Mitutoyos get a mad amount of use while crafting. I used a non digital micrometer for way too long.

I can not stress this enough if you like to play video games. Take the money and get 144Hz monitors, nothing feels quite nice as a 144Hz monitor. As a close second get a mechanical keyboard, they last longer then you could imagine with proper upkeep and well worth the investment for a good one.

Nuwave oven.

Hear me out.

It may look like cheap midnight infomercial crap... But it has changed my life..

This thing can cook everything perfectly!

Got some left over food from the restaurant you ate last night?

Throw it in the NuWave Oven and it will taste better then when you ordered it! Seriously! I put some french fries from a fast food joint in there and, omg let me tell you, pure pefection! Better then it was fresh from the restaurant!

It so easy to use and clean, your average geekhacker can use it with no problem.

Just last night I made Chicken Breast wrapped with bacon and stuffed with cream cheese. Took less then 20 mins and I made like 0 mess.

It was so freaking juicy and crispy and.....GOOD!

Best purchase of 2015 hands down!

P.S You can even bake a cake in this mother ****er!

psshaa

More people need to buy this thing!

So we can create a NuWave Oven thread and people can share what they have made!

I am almost cooking every night!

Talk about healthy!

Throw some Peppers stuffed with some Beef, Onion and Cheese, then play a 20 min game of league (Yeah I carry the team) and BAM! Dinner is served!

The Miss loves it and I don't have to miss my games while cooking!

I am no way affiliated with the NuWave oven company. Thank you.

I didn't know that I needed a Pebble smartwatch until I was gifted with one last week  :)
It's limited in its usefullness but It's a nifty little gadget and a conversation starter. Now I can keep my iphone in my pocket while driving and control Pandora music stream via my watch! Who woulda thought?

Are those key caps under your watch pad printed ones?

The watch is on top of my Model M which has laser etched caps. The glare from the room lights are messing with your eyeballs

There are too many to consider when I think about "Most useful ever".

But, "recently",  one neat little device that I think can offer amazing value for money is the Google Chromecast. If you look at all it offers for the 30-something bucks it cost when coupled with the right software, it is really quite amazing and one of my best recent purchases.

Lately:
My little, used Samsung laptop, 11.6in matte 1366 res., 4gigs, Core i3, under 2.5 pounds...

I added an SSD (none of the onboard b.s.), and better wifi card, gave it a cleaning...  Still to come, 8gigs of ram. Build quality is average (coming from top of the line Sony it's a bit of a bummer), and battery life is only around 3 hours even after the SSD, but it's a fantastic travel laptop. About the same as carrying a small book.

Most useful ever?
That would need to be quantified to get a good answer. Is it what I use most, what got me interested in tech, what drives my business... Too many ways to answer that.

Datavac is pretty good. Much better constructed than I thought it would be, and very powerful. Good purchase, worth the $55 for sure.

  • a swiss knife / pocket multi-tool.  I carry it in my pocket whenever I leave the house.  I'm on my 3rd after losing the 1st and having the 2nd one confiscated at the airport lol.
  • a heart rate monitor.  This makes sure I don't "over do it" when exercising.

SSDs are a great addition to any PC. I learnt the professional version SSD worth the additional investment, they are faster, more reliable and heat less than their commercial counterparts.

What is the price difference between the professional and commercial versions?  I have been upgrading some of the computers at my office during the slow season and I have found that a SSD, even something as small as 120GB, is the best upgrade dollar-for-dollar.  We don't use much of our local storage as now most things are cloud-based but it still speeds up the OS quite a bit along with other applications like Excel, Word, and our tax software, so we could even drop to smaller than 120GBs and if the professional ones aren't a ton more it might be worth it.

All of our important data is either cloud-based or based on a local server, so the speed increase significantly outweighs the possible risk of local data loss, at least my case.

The Synology UI is really nice. Setting audio server, NFS / SMB, quota, etc ... everything is so easy with a Synology. I'd love a 2.5" variant because of their small size

Keep in mind that enterprise usage is way different than end user usage. Most SSDs in the enterprise are DB volumes, which sees a lot more data turnover than an end user. A LOT more. I mean, a lot a lot A LOT more. In the enterprise, this is OK, because the speed offsets the 'risk' since regular backups of the DBs are being done, yadda yadda.

The SSDs I use are all for OS/Apps. My data all goes either to a RAID 6 array on my server, or the cloud, depending on what it is. Data is data, no need to put it on super fast expensive storage. Unless you're doing heavy 4k video editing, then SSDs might be a requirement...

SSDs are good, but be careful of losing data due to failure.  A Carnagie Melon study on Facebook massive SSD usage had some interesting findings on the subject of reliability:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/facebooks-ssd-experience/
https://users.ece.cmu.edu/~omutlu/pub/flash-memory-failures-in-the-field-at-facebook_sigmetrics15.pdf

Thanks for the heads-up!  I've only read about data loss when the SSD is left without power.  thankfully my diskstation has my important data covered. :thumb:
You're welcome!  It was an eye opener for me as well.  I had started to use solid state storage on some of our servers for additional speed since there's 0 seek time, but have since moved to traditional enterprise class hard drives (also because the data has grown to the point ssds aren't cost effective).
Recently?

A larger capacity SSD for my desktop.  I also stuffed the old SSD in my laptop...best upgrade after adding ram (lol only laptop upgrades for my model).

Ever?

So far it has to be the Synology Diskstation. I had a DS413 that died and was replaced with a DS414.  I use it primarily for backup.  Working on an x-deal with a friend for off-site data storage but he still needs to get a NAS.  He will soon though seeing that I keep bugging him to get one he suffered a hard drive failure. :'(

Other useful stuff I've bought:
  • a swiss knife / pocket multi-tool.  I carry it in my pocket whenever I leave the house.  I'm on my 3rd after losing the 1st and having the 2nd one confiscated at the airport lol.
  • a heart rate monitor.  This makes sure I don't "over do it" when exercising.

True, but that also means that they are built, to a certain extent, more robustly.  Even though the data integrity may be slightly more, because of all that turnover, they have to be made better.  A consumer ssd in those environments would be toast much quicker just due to the duty cycle.

That's how I use SSDs as well--os or programs where data loss is easily managed.  Totally agree that archival storage doesn't have to be fast, just reliable.  I stopped using RAID after RAID 5 after discovering that bit-rot can silently destroy the data integrity of those systems.  I now use my own redundancy method I've dubbed RAID 1.3, which is jbod of three drives of identical data that are manually integrity checked on a regular basis for bit-rot using windiff.

Totally this. It blows my mind when I go to someones house and they have TV's that don't have a streaming box or a computer attached. Like what are you some type of caveman?

My TV has built in roku, which isn't as easy to use as chromecast, but also has the advantage of a dedicated remote not using up an HDMI input.

Since someone else mentioned food... Slow Cooker. Its hands down the easiest way to make AMAZING food. I made pot roast for six people last week, and it took me like ten minutes of prep.

My wife wants one of these so bad (or at least a rice cooker).  Any recommendations on a quality one?

I use a Hamilton Beach cooker I bought from Amazon. Just make sure you get an oval one so that you can properly stack meat on the bottom of the cooker. I use mine weekly without a hiccup.

What controller solution are you using?

I heard a ps4 controller works if you dont like the steam controller. Or you would have to get a xbone controller with the wireless dongle.

I'm also a fan of the Steam Link.  Not my submission for most useful piece of tech (still thinking of that), but it's great.

I use the Steam controller though - it's the best mouse + keyboard replacement controller I've ever used.  I've yet to use it as a "regular" controller though, so can't comment on that (so far I've mostly just played Civ V ^-^ ).

You can do that.  But that's not really the point of that service, and only serves to push the cost to buyers that don't do that.

Amazon prime and other similar services are based on the assumption people will not abuse on the benefits.

The only benefit you would be abusing would be the 2 days shipping, and if you decided that you really liked it you wouldn't even be abusing that.  We have ordered plenty of things at my office that we returned for reasons ranging from something being broken to it being the wrong size or even us just not needing it anymore, and I have never had any issues with returns  People buy all kinds of things like clothing, shoes, and even electronics specifically from Amazon because you don't get hosed with shipping if you decide it doesn't fit or its not for you (looking at you Newegg) so I see no problem, especially if you use Prime as much as most people do, to buy a mouse with the intention of trying and maybe keeping the mouse, but if you don't like it to send it back for a refund.

Various SSDs.

HP Microserver- for anyone considering a NAS, consider one of these instead of a Synology/QNAP. Takes up to six drives (defaults at 4 but you get another 2 with modding), expandable to 16G RAM, CPU is far more powerful than off the shelf NAS boxes. Similar footprint to a NAS and still cost-effective.

I am using a 360 controller right now.  Unfortunately, for some reason the with the Chinese knock off wireless dongle I have, the dpad inputs do not register when I have it plugged into the steam link directly.  So now I have a keyboard plugged into the link and the dongle plugged into my computer.  Kind of a pain right now but it is much cleaner than running a long hdmi.

FRAPS game capture video recorder.
Being a laser show producer, a small bit of my job entails capturing videos of laser shows for client previews. Until quite recently I was going about it the olde-fashioned way by exporting the animations directly from the laser show software--a time-consuming, arduous bear of a task involving rendering times, file size limitations, and file converting. Now I simply expand the preview window within the laser software and record away!
Seriously, this little piece of software tech has saved me a lot of time and frustration, both in the past, and in the future.

I can't imagine a mouse past 1200 dpi. How do you control it? I usually play games at roughly 15 in / 360... 10-12 in /360 when I want to mess around.

I've dabbled in skateboarding for like twenty years. I can handle small accurate motions, but if I have to move my wrists sideways with less than 1600 dpi it's GG for me. Maybe nerve damage I have no idea. I can control 6k dpi on a 20in monitor without a problem. I'll play mmorpgs @ 6000 dpi and FPS games @ 1600 - 3200 dpi. I also use 1600 dpi for small detail stuff like 3D modeling, etc.

It took some practice. I raised the dpi level every few days until I maxed out the mouse. I was using the sentey rev. at 7200 dpi which was crazy. At 6000-7200 dpi I barely move my wrist, which was my overall goal.

Ultimately I would want a contoured version of the CST L-Trac but that will have to wait for now.

15 in / 360... 10-12 in /360? What does that mean?

It means that to make a 360 you need to move 15 inches. This is usually used by CS:GO or CS 1.6 players, in other games people usually just give their dpi and in-game sensitivity.

Windows 7..

Been using it for years... no problems whatsoever.. I see no reason to go to 10.

Nice! Let me get yo IP so I can exploit all those zero days.

pretty sure the ip has an obfuscation layer..  against direct hacking.

I am assuming you are talking about NAT?

Or are you talking about the OSI layers?

My TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator. One of the best investments I've ever made.

Yea, but it's way faster to use the emulator..

The physical calculator is a lot more compact and playing Tetris on it is much more enjoyable when I can hold it.  :) Plus, I bought it over a decade ago when I was in high school and one couldn't bring a laptop into class or exams.

15 in / 360... 10-12 in /360? What does that mean?

It means that to make a 360 you need to move 15 inches. This is usually used by CS:GO or CS 1.6 players, in other games people usually just give their dpi and in-game sensitivity.
Ah, I see. I'm an RPG fan that occasionally plays some of the classic FPSs. Thanks.

I'm a big TF2 player which runs off the same engine as CS:GO. I was a high sensitivity player before realizing low was used by a lot of the pros in CS:GO / TF2. I recently raised it to 10 in / 360 to help keep up my pace with the gameplay but 15 in was fantastic at learning to really control my movements. You can fine tune your aim when it requires more movement on your end.

Tech? Questionable whether it fits.

I bought the Incase Icon bag - holy **** this thing is awesome. It's lightweight, but can hold over 10kg of tech, clothes and folders/papers. You want a dedicated compartment for your glasses? Got it. Tablet AND laptop parts? Yup. Penholders? Absolutely.

It costs a decent chunk, but it has honestly been so helpful, especially when travelling.

I jumped on the raspi 2 homeserver bandwagon recently and it's doing really well for my purpose. I use it kind of a download server with NZBGet which works great so far.

Googling this now =]

I have my old AMD desktop serving as my download server atm. It's stupid basic... just a Windows 7 OS tower w/ an SSD for processing and 1tb of HDD storage. It also utilizes usenet services that handle all of my downloads. I know nothing about genuine servers so this was the next best thing.

Been considering one as a side project to mess around with, the local electronics store is what Radioshack Used to be back in the day and carries all sorts of things like that...give me a reason to give them some business.

I know my Razer Naga had a huge impact on my WoW skills. I can't play WoW without it. Too bad the scroll wheel is crap now because I've had it for about two years. I have a backup Naga (the special edition green one that I thought was only going to be made for a little bit, but I still see it at Best Buy almost every time I go there) but for some reason the side buttons feel different, like not as clicky.

Astro A40 + Mixamp Pro TR for Xbox One. Definitely comes in handy at night, and I use it on both Xbox and PC.

Other than that, I have a lot of stuff, but most of it hasn't made a huge impact on any particular thing.

I believe a good pen-enabled convertible laptop is a great thing. I love my thinkpad X200T for reading papers. I don't think I can downgrade to 16:9 aspect ratio though, thus I'm stuck with X201T at best… lack of on-board USB 3 ports bothers me a bit.

On a different note, I'm extremely happy that I stumbled upon several old Sennheiser headphones (HD 25 and HD 565) a few years ago, that lead me to my holy grails, late-80s' Sennheiser HD 540 Reference (open) and HD 250 Linear (closed). They're the most comfortable cans on my head ever, I love the sound signature… and I don't feel any motivation to spend a fortune on new gear.

Definitely.  I got one from dell for my xps that powers the laptop and anything else I can plug into it.  18000 mAh comes in handy.

I'd have a really hard time giving one specific piece of tech, maybe SSDs...

This one is context specific and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet: a local SIM card with data when travelling abroad.

No need to scrounge around for questionable open wi-fi, you can blend in a bit more with the locals (got asked for directions a few times, which I did not expect at first), want to know more about a historic figure or place? Just fire up an app like Field Trip and voilà, self-guided tour of anywhere. Looking for restaurants, museum and transit schedules? Done. Translations on the fly? Voilà.

(Plus you can play Ingress.)

I didn't have a mousepad at work for a while. When I finally got one the difference was night and day. Not sure how I went so long without.

All mousepads that are stitched looks like that..

They also make non-stitched pads but the edges will fray up eventually, but you could just cut the stitching off if you don't like it..

Purchasing a car with a Bluetooth audio package. When I was first looking at my current DD Bluetooth audio wasn't a make or break it for me. I saw it as nothing more than a nice little bonus, not really something that was really part of my calculus on whether or not I should choose one vehicle over another. It has been amazing and I can't imagine driving a car without it. Hands-free audio for phone calls and no AUX cables for my podcasts or music. Truly, a wonderful piece of tech. Super convenient and also makes me a safer driver!

Of course, phones, computer, a good keyboard, and all of that are really useful pieces of tech. I ignored all of those because those are, in my mind, necessary. Picking one of those almost seems like cheating.

Mehh.. what about a VT-100 in the place where the nav screen should sit. THAT would be awesome. And what about cherry blue switches on the wheel instead of tip keys. And a mech keyboard built in.

I always find bluetooth audio unreliable in cars, but maybe a lot has changed. I'm mainly speaking of experience with Volkswagen cars.

It wouldn't make me a safe driver... I would listen to minimal techno / house and drive 200kmh through the city center coz the beat man!

It wasn't a significant consideration at the time, as I said. However, in retrospect any DD I purchase in the future must have a proficient Bluetooth audio system.

Unless if this was installed into a fully autonomous vehicle I would more than likely crash. I want to improve my safety (while still having access to phone/music/podcasts), not run over innocent bystanders.

Mine has been incredibly reliable. My car is not a Volkswagen, it's a Hyundai. Fords system is decent, though not as streamlined as my Hyundai though the Ford has more features.

Their Armadillo 2 mouse bungee i prefer over the traditional springy style bungee by quite a bit.

I finally brought home the C-Tech Anthea XL mousepad. It's very good for the price (I paid €7 locally), and I love that it's only 27cm deep, which might be insufficient, if you use very low sensitivity, but I don't, and my tray is only 30cm deep anyway. The red C logo on the right can be annoying, but I've covered it by a trackball, so no issue there.

That you can buy a mat for so little money!

I paid that much for a QcK mini 5 years ago, and that was the cheapest okay mousepad for the price back then (at least here), but yeah, you can apparently buy a thicker, stitched desk pad for the price now.

Logitech G602

Of all the mice i have owned/reviewed/borrowed/sold etc etc...

It checks off every single box for me minus one..the weight

130G with one AA 152G with two AA's installed.

Asides from that it's quite literally my perfect mouse and i have tried or owned (or still own) most of the ""gamer favorites" which i generally personally find lackluster.

Why do you and others consider that so heavy? Is it really too heavy for.. what.. FPS or something? Or just a preference?

Honest question: I usually like heavier mouse and have the feeling it makes me more precise.

Over long sessions it gets fatiguing to move in quick movements compared to other mice i have owned/used etc.  The Razer Deathadder Chroma is HUGE and even it only weighs 105G by comparison so with two AA's in use the G602 weighs 30%+ more.  It's not unbearable or i would not be using it as my daily driver, but i'd definitely rather it be closer to around 90-100G.

So too heavy for twitch FPS movements?  Yes enough so i swap it out for FPS games personally, for other uses it's tolerable only because i love the rest of the mouse so damn much.  But seriously it's a behemoth compared to other mice on the market weight wise.

Yeah, I can see that. Because I also cook a lot, I'm oftentimes holding large pans in my right hand, moving them around. So I don't really feel the weight of a "tiny mouse" (in comparison) anymore.

See i'm a scratch baker for a living and use my hands constantly so by the end of the day my hands are near shot as are my wrists.  So generally i prefer lighter mice...however the rest of the G602 is so perfect i putup with the non ideal weight.  The corsair KATAR i just reviewed was perfect weight however the rest of it was very average/below average so even though it's comfy i don't use it.

Iv'e tried it before wasn't overly in love with how it felt in the hand,  in fact iv'e tried most mice on the market aside from
Final mouse
Zowie Mice (any)

asides from that i own them have owned them or have at least borrowed them.  I even have Tek Syndicates own branded mouse the "standard issue"

I'm in the process of working on a review but thus far for it's pricepoint it's actually fairly impressive.  MUCH more so than the Corsair KATAR was for sure.

What is the deal with the Corsair KATAR anyway? I don't really get why it is so popular in the gaming communities.

Basically if you are a fingertip grip user not many new mice have come out with that grip specifically in mind for quite some time and the ones that have are fairly MEH...SO when a new one comes around claiming Zero accel and gaming focused and this and that all those people that use that grip get excited since the market mostly focuses on Claw and Palm grip users.

Why'd you pick that one over the other comparable fitness bands? I get overwhelmed with all the choices.

Price :) got one for 15 bucks.
And it's not the best out there, but if you are on the verge of buying one but don't know if you will like it. 15 bucks for a waterproof fitness tracker with heart rate tracker, sleep tracker and alarm is a great deal to find out if you do.

Also you can set up apps to set off your alarm.

Over the last few years, I think one of the best things I have ever purchased was a thumb trackball. It was a solution for a cramped workspace a few years ago and I haven't looked back since then. I only use a regular mouse when I game. Even then, some stuff is fine with a thumb trackball.

I don't know why this wouldn't be on someone's list of top purchases.

A phone is the one piece of tech that I wish could be un-invented, think how much better the world would be without them.

To add to the thread, my most useful piece of tech might simply be my solar powered watch.

I'm going to assume you mean the current implementation of smart phones?  I do miss the days when a cell phone was only good for calls and some amount of texting.  But smartphones have allowed me to keep in contact on an hourly basis with people I otherwise wouldn't be able to on an even semi-regularly basis (geekhackers), so for that I am very thankful.

I absolutely loathe having to "type" on a smartphone. I don't see why some kind of tactile response couldn't some day be implemented into the screen--Some kind of intense, proximal vibration or holographic force field layer (a la the Trek Holodeck)

I find myself ignoring phone calls and texts that aren't from my primary contacts.  Just because I'm sick of being tethered.  I tell my clients to e-mail me... it's faster.  What do they do?  Call me.  In the middle of the night.  While I'm driving.  While I'm... well you get the picture.  They are literally more trouble than they're worth, because they're generally the low rent pay for my hobbies clients.

When the office I work at started out the owner here actually put his and another partner's cell phone numbers on the answering machine for people to call if they had something urgent that they needed.  That lasted for about 6 months before the partner got really sick of getting random phone calls about tax questions and tax planning at 3AM so he made the owner take it off.

Things like that are what I don't really like about cell phones now.  Not that long ago, it wasn't only acceptable but rather it was expected that you would leave a message for someone and they would return your call when they got the message, whereas now people get upset if I answer the phone and won't give out someone's personal cell number so they can get their answer right away.

If going with "lately" than I have to say - the Roost stand. It's a wonderful and portable laptop stand so can work anywhere and don't need to hump over my screen anymore. Been saving me a lot of back & neck pain since I got it. A bit on the expensive side but worth every penny! :)

I have one from logitech that they stopped making- the alto stand (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Alto-Connect-Notebook-Stand/dp/B000RZRXV2).  It's great!  I even have a separate one just in case I need an extra.  Glad I did, because the price escalated.  I paid $30 for it when it first came out.

The price for that is just crazy. Good thing you got them for 30$ though. So not only it's a stand but it has a built-in USB hub? That's a nice feature to have. Never can have too many USB ports (I'm looking at you, Macbook), right?

And it gets better... the hubs is powered. And has ports on the back and front, and cable routing.  I'm not sure why they stopped making them, because they are awesome.

A phone.
I don't know why this wouldn't be on someone's list of top purchases.

A phone is the one piece of tech that I wish could be un-invented, think how much better the world would be without them.

I'm glad your experience is positive.  I feel like people have reached the point where we are too connected to these devices.  At work, sometimes I stop for a minute while I'm eating at the cafeteria and look around to see everybody staring into their phone.  It's an overwhelming amount of folks who cant put these things down for a while.

Completely agree, the dependence on them is more than a little ridiculous.  To play devil's advocate to the cafeteria point (and any other time-killing smart phone use), people used to just read the newspaper or magazines while they were waiting in those situations.  We've just shifted to a different medium of ignoring the people around us.  :P

Absolutely true.  There is one big difference though, young women were not reading the newspaper whilst driving their car into other cars or pedestrians.  But back then, they were still messing with makeup in the car or doing their hair.

Ok, so positive contribution to the thread...  In the last year I think my most enjoyed piece of tech would be my desk top speakers, JBL lsr305.  I really enjoy listening to them.

17-Inch MacBook Pro. Yes, 17 inches.

I know what you're thinking -- "They haven't made those in years!". True, but 1920x1200 resolution on a 16:10 17" laptop screen is absolutely glorious. No scaling issues, tons of screen real estate. Easily the best TN display I've seen, and I'm quite picky about that.

Best part is it cost a fraction of the cost of any new MacBook and is in perfect condition. Sure it won't be my gaming or photo editing machine, but for programming, school, and day-to-day stuff, it's brilliant. I sure hope Apple brings back the large model sometime soon.

I've had mine for almost ten years now, still going strong! Isn't my WoW machine anymore but it's still great for what you mentioned :)

I still use my 10-year-old 23" iMac for low-mid intensity editing/streaming/etc. It has been growing less useful of late and I fight the urge to just recycle or sell it. But that display screen is too nice!

Someone gave me a generation or two old Kindle and I'm getting a surprisingly amount of use from it. Basically it's my room remote. Have it set up to control the lights and fan, Roku (Plex server, spotify, Netflix, Hulu), and of course great for reading and very light gaming and browsing (screen isn't great...).

A modern phone with tactile buttons would be #1 on my list

Would be cool if the touch screen could fake physical buttons somehow. That would be a win-win.
I absolutely loathe having to "type" on a smartphone. I don't see why some kind of tactile response couldn't some day be implemented into the screen--Some kind of intense, proximal vibration or holographic force field layer (a la the Trek Holodeck)

We got to borrow an iPad from work and it's been used a lot lately by the wifey. They're one of those things where you might not feel like you need it, but if you get one you can have a surprising amount of fun with it.
I think I'll even go as far as to say that for my mothers' needs a tablet would be fine. But she wants her PC.

The most useful piece of tech I bought lately, certainly not EVER, was my powerbank. It's hella nice having something like that with you on long drives.

Certainly not high-tech but tech nontheless, the silicone lid to my insulated ceramic travel mug needed to be replaced after the original was lost. I was unaware as to the impact it had on my everyday life until I had to do without it.

Barely tech related but I found what I believe to be the greatest mechanical pencil I have ever tried.
The Kuru Toga (http://www.amazon.com/Uni-Mechanical-Kurutoga-Roulette-M510171P-43/dp/B004OHNTVC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463454157&sr=8-1&keywords=Kuru+toga+metal%5C)

Just looks like a regular pencil right?
nononono, the lead rotates as you write. This sounds kinda stupid but if you write small like me, this is a godsend.

I never thought I could have such a strong opinion on a pencil.

I just spent a solid minute trying to figure out why the hell a rotating LED is even a feature, much less an important one.

For the record, it's spelled 'lead' (even though "it" obviously isn't really lead anyway).  :)

Lately, it was an ultrasonic cleaner (http://www.cdrking.com/?mod=products&type=view&sid=10742&main=147) for about ~USD21

So far I've cleaned my Lamy Vista, a whole bunch of key sets, some old coins, I have my doubts about cleaning a watch with it though...maybe just the bracelet.

I like pretty much all machines..

I don't like music primarily because it's a message with no purpose..

Happy sound,   why am I suppose to be happy

Sad sound, ok why sad

I understand the message,  but there's no plot, it's just hey, happy, sad, love, happy, sad, love

What is the musician getting at..

One has the capacity to feel,   but that sensory system serves a distinct purpose...

Music listened for its own sake is a pointless invocation of the auditory system.

Same.

I got sick around the time the Nintendo Switch was coming out. I bought it and played BotW the whole time I was sick. Made it a lot easier to get through and passed the time easily.

Nothing in particular really! Just got some houseplants around. I can only have small potted things as I live in a small place. I have some orchids as well as some vines growing out of a pot, along with a buncha other things. Are you growing anything else besides melon? Fresh watermelon is the best! I can't wait for summer when they're back in season.

I'm not growing watermelon . it needs a very different soil than the rest of the plants.

I --could- grow watermelon, or just buy giant ones for $5 from costco.. hahaha.

I'm growing winter-melons, squash, zucchini, gourds, tomato, chili, bokchoy, chives, sweet pea.

I --could- grow watermelon, or just buy giant ones for $5 from costco.. hahaha.

I'm growing winter-melons, squash, zucchini, gourds, tomato, chili, bokchoy, chives, sweet pea.

Oh, fresh chickpeas must be so yummy! Same with bokchoy and chives. I often make my own dried chilis from ones from the store, and I also use chickpeas to make hummus.

Chili's tough.. If it's not hot enough out,  the chili arn't very spicy/ flavorful.

Working on a low fat vegan curry recipe.

It's pretty straight forward to make a vegan curry,  but making it Low fat has thus far been daunting.

Here's the thing..

Because we can't have it, or can't go some where, we really want to go.

But,  Actually given the opportunity , you'd probably just stay home and play League of Legends.

Absolutely my best purchase of the last year as well. Video games on a 144 Hz, 1440p, IPS panel with gsync/freesync and you'll never ever go back to anything less.

These little cable clips are an absolute godsend for managing cables that don't necessarily need to be tied down (e.g. USB charging cables, Bluetooth receiver dongles).

I have used "Flexon" by Marchon frames for my glasses for at least 25 years and they are incredible. My current frames are 10-15 years old and still great. I have replaced a few pads and screws, but otherwise they have lasted through multiple sets of new lenses.

U need a calibration pr0be. by now, a u3011 would've drifted really far because it's CCFL backlit.

CCFL is also very hot,  which is also why it drifts so much over time as the tubes wear along with baking the crystals.. often times causing slight color cast.

I probably should get a pr0be but I'm pleased with how it looks. I ran through a series of calibration images here: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ and poked through the monitor's menus. I noticed that it has a more vibrant and slightly greener cast than either of my LG LED LCD monitors. It's also insanely bright.

Now that I've tasted 2560x1600 I never wanna go back to "HD" again. I almost get depressed when I go into the office and have to use 1920x1080 resolution

The Green cast is due to the Baking..

The test image can help with contrast and brightness, and sort of get gamma in control..

However, you really need a probe on these old HOT monitors..

I got it as a gift (Yeah, I didn't purchase it) and have been searching Amazon for it but can't find anything like it. It's just a really handy and unique cord.
