Title: Retro DSA Packing Party / Silicon Valley GH Meet-up
Post by: samwisekoi on Sun, 28 April 2013, 11:14:20
The Retro DSA Packing Party and Silicon Valley GH Meet-up will be held on Saturday May 4th at 10:00am in Mt. View, CA.

Confirmed attendees include mkawa, hashbaz, and your host, samwisekoi.  Matt3o will not be flying in from Italy, but who knows, maybe he'll Skype in.

If you come and competently help pack Retro DSA keys, you will be able to take YOUR Retro DSA order home with you at the end of the party.

If you come, but don't have an order to pick up (or want it to come in the mail for some reason) you will still get:

- Good Company
- Great Espresso
- Pinball
- Pool
- Pizza
- Possibly Beer
- Touch and type on many, many keyboards, including (at least) Model M, SSK, Unicomp, Cherry ML, Cherry MX Green, Brown, Black, Red, Blue & Clear

Please reply here and/or PM me to confirm attendance.

Thanks and see (some of ) you there!

I'll be there!

Will bring my Mr Interface switch tester bag, Realforce 88UB, Keycool 84 white with black switches and a bag of different caps including zinc, pbt, pom and abs.

If there is interest I could also bring one pre-PC machine some of which have nice keyboards to type on (and some are quite terrible). Amiga 600/1200, BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, Amstrad CPC 6128, Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K/+2/+3, Atari 600XL, Memotech MTX-512. Won't be able to play it though as they require a specific monitor and a 230W step-up.

Cool.  I'll go see I can find,  boot-up, and bring my 8080-based CP/M machine from 1983.  I might have had the state-of-the-art amber 7" screen!  We can see who remembers Wordstar commands.  (I think SMF uses some of the same commands, like ^B for bold.)

The Williams games are all so old by now that they can't stand up to daily use.  We've had some, and basically we use them until they are too broken to play and the pinball rental firm has to come swap them out.

Shrek is a good game, very lively.

I know, our office got in an old Firepower and it was basically busted from day 1.  Some of the sense switches are in the wrong position, and one of the solenoids seemed to be producing the wrong amount of kick, so balls either jammed or bounced back out of the firing position.

actually i know a guy in the bay area who restores and reliability mods pinball machines. i think he calls himself frodo or some bizarre thing like that. anyway, he used to do IC routing before advent of high level synthesis. now he's just a bitter little man who fixes pinball machines. you'd love him ron.

I'll be doing a drive by, not clear on any details right now.

I can't bring the Split Kinesis....I tore it down just over a year ago (remember my bizarre trauma last spring?) and don't have it reassembled with the last 2 mods I was going to do. It's in storage. BUT I'm motivated to reassemble, photo, and fix the Everything Kinesis article if I can get access to the damn article. Grrrr......

I'm also motivated to do some GH things...

You guys can PM me for my email addy/# if you want....

just remembered that he goes by shire. also he's a hypermiler. i remember him as frodo because he quite literally looks like the character actor from the jackson movies (but older and much more bitter about the advent of high level synthesis).

anyway, i'm now in SF, so yes, this is really happening tomorrow 11am.

tomorrow morning i'm bringing myself and a particular monstrous radeon 7950 (sapphire 950mhz edition w/ arctic cooling extreme 7970 air cooler asking 300) i need to get rid of to the meetup. i'll also be bringing my famous sorting hands (note hands not particularly suited for sorting and not famous).

also folks, don't feel that it's necessary to bring keyboards. frankly, we're just going to be shooting the **** while we toss around and box big old bags of keycaps

Status update at 13:24 PDT:

All US order that would fit into a USPS small Priority Mail box have been packed and a postage label applied.  Some of those were done before the mail carrier came by, so some are already on their way.  The rest will be given to the carrier on Monday.

However, something like 15 "small" orders won't fit in a small box, and really need to spend the extra $6 to upgrade to a Medium box.  My preference is to just do that and trust that the impacted people will promptly pay a PayPal invoice for the difference.

I have set the impacted orders aside for the moment, and we will move on to packing orders for people outside of the US.  I am open to suggestions about what to do with the over-stuffed orders.

Medium flat-rate box would not be cost effective.

small size flat-rate box: $5.80
any size box under 1lb cross county via priority mail: $6.95
medium size flat-rate box: $12.35

I have set the impacted orders aside for the moment, and we will move on to packing orders for people outside of the US.  I am open to suggestions about what to do with the over-stuffed orders.

Medium flat-rate box would not be cost effective.

small size flat-rate box: $5.80
any size box under 1lb cross county via priority mail: $6.95
medium size flat-rate box: $12.35

Let me look into this option.  Thanks!

So this will work for US shipments.  I need to get some boxes, but it will be just another couple of bucks I think.

International orders are worse; the next step up from $24 Flat-rate priority is $37 for a customer-provided box.  Or, of course, I can step DOWN to first-class which will arrive, well eventually.

I'll look for mid-size boxes on Monday for both.  And if it works out I will do the self-packing for US orders and figure out the cost for the ROW.

All orders that fit in a single small flat rate box are packed.  All US orders that were supposed to fit into a medium flat rate box and did are also packed.  Medium boxes for non-US destinations will be packed shortly.

Orders that won't fit into a single box (small or medium), including those targeted for a pair of small boxes will be packed after I acquire shipping boxes.

There may be a couple of orders that won't fit into even a single medium box.  Those I will handle on a one-by-one basis during the upcoming week.

We are tired, but there are a lot of boxes ready to ship.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this GB a success!

And sorry I had to bail so abruptly - I'll make it up to you guys next meetup!

Can you guys confirm which boxes for europe are packed and ready to be sent? Who's boxes are not affected with size issue? Would that be all european orders or just some? Is this gonna cause longer delays or would it be matter of one day to find solution? Just asking cause I understand you guys have jobs and your own lives and you may not spend most of your time on this during a week.

Just asking cause I understand you guys have jobs and your own lives and you may not spend most of your time on this during a week.

Today we rest.  Tomorrow I will try to do a more specific inventory of the situation and let everyone know their state.  I want to get all of this plastic out of my office within a week, so if your order fit its intended box, or you tell me to upsize you, then your order is likely to be on its way next week.

I can tell you that 80% of the US orders went out on Saturday or will go out on Monday, simply because I did not have to generate Customs paperwork.  Also, 80% of the non-US orders fit in their assigned boxes, so I am going to try and get at least some of them out the door on Monday as well.

In all cases, you will get an e-mail when I generate the mailing label/paperwork.  However, those e-mails will likely go to your PayPal e-mail address, so keep an eye on that.

If by Thursday 17:00 PDT you have not gotten either a notification of a problem OR a shipment notification, please send me a note.  But please wait until then so I will have some time to sort things out.

TL;DR: Most US orders out by Monday. All members should get a ship notice or problem notification in their PayPal e-mail by Thursday 17:00 PDT.

Thank you so much for sorting everything out.

I know it's not easy when hundreds of orders need to be collected, sorted and then shipped.

Appreciate the fact that you guys would actually send the overseas orders out (not many would ever do that) hence for all of us stuck elsewhere on this planet, we indeed thank you for all your patience and diligence in doing this for us.

Of course you realise that your order is not being sent by them to Europe - it's being sent to a US proxy who is then sending it on to me (& I'll then be sending it on to you!)

Thanks for the compliment iMav! They're actually kind of pricey. If enough people wanted these as a groupbuy, I could probably do 24 of them at about $150 each. If I made them a little smaller, taking them down from maybe 30"x72" to something like 24"x72" then I could drop the price a bit more. I would make a $10 donation to GH for each one ordered. But again, that's for a quantity of 24. I don't know if that many people would want one.

Just so you know, these banners are full-on cloth.  Soft to the touch, and what looks like full-color printing.

They are definitely higher quality than the pro-grade banners you can see hanging next to one of them in my office.

I don't know how they would do outside, but for indoor use, they are awesome.  Krog' should also provide prices (or a link) so we can see about buying them in smaller quantities for business signage.

These banners are dye-sublimated -- the same sort of process you see on some keycaps, except with fabric. Sam, the banners I sent the mkawa also came with some clear plastic clips. These clips can be slipped over the front edge of a table. The clips have the hard velcro (hook side) on them, and they can attach to the velcro tabs (soft, loop) on the back, so you could put them on the edge of a table, like a table cloth.

The size is also a variable that we can tweak. 72" is wider than some people realize. Maybe a smaller size would be better? I'll work on the pricing. There's also vinyl, but they don't wear as well as the fabric.

If people are interested in banners to hang, you could get this on 15-oz. outdoor vinyl from Vistaprint for $54 + $20 shipping.

Yeah, I'm in Manhattan, not the cheapest place on Earth, LOL!

If it's alright with the admins, I can provide the art files for people who might want to go that route.

I am more interested having one with the dye-sub process.  It's not about the cheapest solution, I want to own a high-quality banner utilizing this innovative process.

Just like I'd much rather have a high-quality and durable keyboard as opposed to a cheap one that may (or may not) get the job done.  :)

Did you not pay for the upgrade from windows xp to win7?

What about if you played games that had a sequel?

Just go to a meetup, iMav and you're likely to see one of these banners. Everyone's gotta sign it -- or at least be photographed in front of it.

(Now wondering if the handwriting will show through to the front... eh, maybe.)

A third (orange background) banner is winging it's way to aggie today, and I think he may end up forwarding it to iMav eventually, or aggie might be kidnapping iMav in order to make him participate in a meetup, I'm not entirely sure.

As for dye-sublimated clothing, it exists, but I'm not in the apparel industry, so I don't use those materials. The banner fabric would be uncomfortable to wear, I think; like a hair shirt, especially the outdoor materials.

Regarding hot Thai food....

I spent 2 years <effectively> in Thailand crawling through jungles, touring temples, and dancing in discos till the sun would rise. I'm 6-0, almost 200 lbs, european decent, usually pretty solid, but a little soft recently. Everywhere I went in Thailand the locals would never give me 'all' the same food the other locals would be given, they always held some back....even when I would smile broadly and try taking it...they always would shake their heads and take the food back, sometimes saying 'no' or 'hot' in english, lol. Finally after a period of time I refused to be dissuaded any longer. I ate the beetles in the shell, picked a snake out of a cage at a street market as they pinned it's head while you eat it, and food so hot it was more hot than food, so hot I couldn't tell what food it was, so hot it hurt!

Oh, and Muay Thai is the most brutal sport I have ever witnessed, makes UFC seem like an introduction to full contact.

I wish I could find a picture of me holding 2 Royal Thai Policemen off the ground in Phuket. Good times.

Imav in socal? My stomping grounds? Imav, you blowing through the bay area? Come on, I dare you!

Pool table full of keyboards.  Lots of diversity and excitement.

The 660C is dreamy.  Everyone liked Greens.  The mystical "perfect keyboard" was indeed perfect.

Which is why my Harley has a battery instead of a magneto.  And shocks on BOTH ends!  But it also has parts that have not changed since 1937.

It's taken a while, but I finally transcribed the GH meet up. Had iPhone recording the entire time, so have a listen in to what happens at a GH meet up.....

IN walks in door with a bright orange banner overhead... "iMavs Palace Of Porn Extravaganza"  (iPope)...
Sth: Hey, hoo u? U got keebordz?
IN: No.
Jwaz: U can haz keebordz.
IN: I don't need no stinking keebordz!
Cgbuen: Wanna c my cool Hall-Effect numpad?
IN: Hell ya, why u think I come?
Hashbaz: I told u 2 shut up.
IN: That was a year ago.
Hashbaz: My shut up is still in effect.
IN: Hall-Effect? Ya, show it to me, that's why I'm here.
Samwisekoi: Wanna eat?
IN: Hooz the new guy?
Mkawa: That's Samwisekoi, our humble host, he haz go-carts.
IN: I like go-carts, I can haz go-carts? Hoo u?
Mkawa: I'im Mkawa (ducks to avoid pizza slice thrown at head).
Mkawa: Why u throw 'za at me?
IN: Don't worry, I'll eat it later, when it's ripe.
DamienG: That's funny, pizza on head. We had pizza-head where I'm from.
Mkawa: I'm the ambassador.
IN: Am I supposed to bow?
Mkawa: Not now, save it for the camera.
IN: Got it. So what's going on here?
Samwisekoi: We r packing keebord retro keekaps. Everyone BACK 2 WERK!
IN: Pretty bossy for new guy. What makes u special besides u r the humble host, haz pizza, haz go-carts, haz pool table o' keebordz, haz Shrek pinball, haz 500 bags o' espresso, haz scotch?
Samwisekoi: 2 werk infidel!!!!
IN: OK, ok, keep your wig on. Pretty bossy for being the new guy and all. What do I do?
Samwisekoi: Put keekaps in boxes.
IN: Put keekaps in pockets. I'm good.
Mkawa: Don't do that, Samwisekoi will have the crew shake u down.
IN: What crew? I don't see no stinking crew! U got crew?
Jwaz: We...
Sth: ...b...
Hashbaz: ...crew.
IN: (meekly) oh
DamienG: That's funny, pizza on head. We had pizza-head where I'm from.
IN: Will anyone check my work, or actually count the number of keekaps after I've played with them?
Cgbuen: No, we 2 bizzy playing with keebordz.
Samwisekoi: Keeping a couple keekaps out of random orders anyhow.
IN: Y?
Sth: beekoz it's funny.
Hashbaz: beekoz it's funny.
Jwaz: beekox it's funny.
(IN looks at Mkawa) Mkawa: Crew is also peanut gallery.
IN: Ahhh...is iMav here?
Cgbuen: Noooo....pimp daddy bizzy promoting iPope to the masses...
IN: Ya, he's a punk. I'd like to sit around wearing a GH crown of keekaps....can I pack his order?
Mkawa: (shouts out) HI IMAV!!!!!
(IN craps in pants)
DamienG: That's funny, pizza on head. We had pizza-head where I'm from.
Sth: Doesn't smell like pizza...
Hashbaz: Doesn't look like pizza...
Jwaz: Doesn't feel like pizza...
IN: Cause it ain't pizza boyz...ok....so iMavs not really here? And why is Cgbuen kneeling facing east on a prayer mat? He muzlim?
Mkawa: Nah, he's facing Wisconson, and that's a Geekhack banner.
IN: Impressive.
Samwisekoi: That's how we roll. (slugging back a shot of espresso-scotch, while playing pinball on top of the pool table)
Sth: Cuprubber!!!!
IN: Ok I'm ready 2 werk. No cuprubber, thank u 4 asking.

(18 hours of pure silence follows on recording, punctuated by the occasional sound of delicate human finger flesh being fillet to the bone by packing labels and tape dispensers)

Mkawa: Oookkkaaaayyy....we should be getting back to our girlfriends. (a short pause followed by raucous laughter throughout room)

(another 18 hours of silence with sounds of various GH'ers warbling to boxes of alpha keekaps, maybe with a couple C64s thrown in, and more packing sounds).

Boxes are all over, keekaps are mostly packed, people look invigorated and ready 2 do yet another marathon session, but cooler heads prevail and point out there r other things in life that need attention, otherwise we can't have our keebord hobby. Everyone is gathered around, hugging and holding, tears flowing unabashedly. It's such a beautiful thing, nothing like it on earth. EVER.

As IN dries his eyes and pilfers a red Swingline stapler from Samwisekois desk, DamianG sidles up.
DamienG: That's funny, pizza on head. We had pizza-head where I'm from.
IN: So I've heard. Where u from?
DamienG: A small island.
IN: Aren't islands, by definition, small?
DamienG: Don't mess with me, I'll code you out of existence!
IN: U can do that?
DamienG: Maybe, but I can certainly make u virtually disappear.
IN: Like Houdini?
DamienG: Yee-hoo-dee?(chopging at the air at invisible enemies)
(IN walks out of room/recording ends)
