Octopad+

A little bit of background about the Octopad. I developed Octopad a year ago and already run two local groupbuys but with a 3D printed and stacked acrylic case. This is basically an upgraded version of those two in terms of and case and knob material.

Details:
  • Materials: Anodized Aluminum Case, 1.6mm FR4 Plate, Chrome Plated Stainless Steel Knobs
  • Case Color Options: Black and Silver
  • Knob Color Options: Black, Chrome Black, Silver, Gold
  • Case Angle: 5°
  • Mounting Method: Top Mounted PCB (PCB is screwed to the case)
  • PCB Details: Hotswappable, No RGB Underglow, Compatible with VIA/QMK. Easily change keymapping (including the encoders) using VIA
    More
  • Rotary Encoder Details: Genuine ALPS encoder with push button, can either have detent or not, D-Shaft
  • Knob Specifications: 18mm Height, 15.2mm Diameter, outer surface is knurled. Tentative Knob, still need to verify if it is compatible-->
    More
  • PCB will be pre-assembled with Kailh or Gateron hotswap sockets
  • 8pcs Gateron Yellow/Black Switches and 8pcs Blank DSA Keycaps is included. Keycaps on the renders are for illustration purposes only and is not part of this GB.

Pricing:

Target price is 130$ for a pre-assembled ready to use Octopad+.

Current Status:
IC Phase. I already purchase 10 units to be sold locally first (Philippines). I will post actual pictures here when I have them.

To those who are interested but is hesitating since they don't know how to program the encoders, the encoders are also fully programmable using VIA. Just edit the keymap and that's it. No need to edit the source code.

I like this design a lot. My only suggestion is to get rid of including switches and keycaps to reduce the cost. I PERSONALLY would be using artisans and prob slightly more premium tactiles anyway for something like this and I believe many others in the hobby that would be in the market for a premium Macro such as this would be doing the same as well. Good luck though with this, I like the design a lot!

knobs good, 8 keys good. I would really recommend increasing the knob cutout to being 19-20mm to allow people to use standard guitar knobs.

edit: via has support for encoders now?
edit2: nvm, vial still >

I second this. I'd rather be able to build it with my own switches and keycaps, plus it would further reduce the cost. Having a solderable pcb in addition to the hotswap only pcb would be a nice addition.

03/02/20201 Update:

As of the moment, there are almost 300 responses on the IC form. And I would like to address some of the concerns of the respondents.

1. Will there be a cheaper kit/Any chance to make the price a little bit cheaper
 - Yes. A cheaper option with a flat acrylic bottom will be offered. Lasercutting an acrylic sheet is cheaper than milling a block of aluminum so this lowers the manufacturing and material cost. Final pricing will be posted before the start of GB.

2. I don't need the included keycaps and switches, can you just remove them to further decrease the price?
 - I will no longer include them by default but I will still include it as an option. However, removing them won't decrease the price that much since the cost of those (if I get them by bulk here in the Philippines) is less than $5.

3. DIY kit?
 - By default the kits will be DIY but assembly is still an option for those who are uncomfortable in soldering. Hotswap (with Gateron/Kailh sockets) and Solder PCB will be offered (Both will be USB-C)

4. E-White?
 - A lot are asking for this color. However, my manu required a qty of 50 in order to do E-White coating. This means I cannot request for one unit with E-White coating as a prototype. Because of this, I am uncomfortable offering E-White, unless people are willing to take the risk. As of the moment, Black and Silver are the only color options.

5. Regional Proxy?
 - Half of the responses on the IC form is from US residents. I am currently speaking with a US Vendor that I have worked with previously and I am strongly considering them as a proxy for USA. Orders will still be handled by me but they will be handling shipping to US addresses to save on shipping costs.

Love the design.

Would buy one in black or E-White, with the preference being E-White.

Maybe add an option on the forms for preferred color choices to help gauge the interest in colour?

lovely to see this moving along. Would you be willing to sell it without knobs stock, and you can add them on if you wish? Lots of people have knobs they already use.

edit: would be cool if something was done with the blank space between the two encoders. oled, or third knob?

Hi! The knobs is an unusual size and might be hard to source. What's the size of your knobs? The one for the Octopad+ is 14mm-15.2mm.

With regards to the blank space in between the knob, there is a piezo buzzer support on the pcb and it is located on the middle of the two knobs. A third knob would look weird I think.

I can add an OLED but I am not knowledgeable with the code required to make custom OLED functions so I decided not to go that route. If there is an OLED there, how are you going to use it?
