[IC] SA Polyclear GB LIVE!

Promo Video

GB LIVE!

SA Polyclear on the Mysterium by CFTKB rendered by SpikedSynapse.

Kitting

Here's a brief explanation for my kitting; the kits are split out this way because of how the MOQ system works for signature plastics.
Transparent keycaps work well with all the other cap sets out there so having them split out this way means more people can buy replacements for keys/bits they might not have otherwise picked up with some other sets.

R2/R4 SA are the same sculpt on rotation, so please take this into account.
I have most of the more common 40s boards supported within Alphas/40s kits, unfortunately due to little to no overlap with other boards and the increase in price for those extra keys I wasn't able to support the Prime-E or TMOV2 with just the Alphas/40s.
There's QAZ, Minivan, NeuronV2 and Whimsy support just to name a few! KLE if it's easier to work with for you.
Kitting Calculator made by poster Ramble, copy the spread to edit.

Scenes

SA Polyclear with:
SA Nightlight by Frosty on the Boston120 by Bluepylon --- SA Ramses by Avrocado on the QAZ by Whydobearsxplod
SA Spectra by Nasp on the Whimsy by PRKNS --- SA Espresso by Jpoc on the M0lly by TheKeyCompany
SA Polyclear on the Ikki68 by Wuque Studio --- SA Fledgling by Andromache on the Rotor by Popsmoke.

Prototypes
I had some prototypes made, namely some 9u bars.

An extreme closeup reveals the shot pattern that only occurs on the longer keycaps, this pattern is barely visible under normal conditions.

Q/A

With lead times being so long what's the lead time on this set?
I've been talking with Signature Plastics for a while they've allowed me to say that from the point of being invoiced the lead time for this set will be 3months.

There's 2u,2.25u and 2.75u Convex bars in the Alphas are they actually convex?
Yes, I confirmed with SP that they have those moulds available.

How long is the IC going to be?
Roughly 1 month if all things go well, most of the groundwork has been done. I just need to gauge interest and get feedback on any changes needed.

Are these caps made of polycarbonate?
Yes.

I'm concerned about getting scratches
Polycarbonate is a harder material than ABS and is equivalent to PBT, under normal use you should not be scratching your keycaps.

Perhaps Zion Studios for SEA/PH?

This looks great -- I just had one suggestion on kitting (which I also put in the form):

Please consider adding a support for split right shift (1.75u/1u R4) in the mods kit. This will be especially helpful for both HHKB and Arisu users -- otherwise they'll need to buy the 40's kit for a single key (1.75u R4)

That’s insane. And your prototype test subject is a 9u bar? That’s insane.

+1 for the 65% users.

Apologies this was included in the KLE and my intended kitting for purchase just forgot to include it in the render, it's being fixed now. Sorry for the mistake.

This looks great, been wanting to try SA for a while but been held back by layout issues; this (being blank) might give me the perfect opportunity!

One suggestion: please consider moving the extra ISO alpha keys (the ones next to the ISO enter and the split left shift) into the alphas kit, rather than mods.  They are alpha keys, and if the idea is that people who just want clear mods to go with an existing alpha kit can just buy the mods kit, or people who just want clear alphas to go with an existing mods kit can just buy the alphas, this won't work for ISO users who will have to buy the whole mods kit just for the sake of two keys (in the case that they wanted alphas), or will always end up with two keys unused (in the case that they just wanted mods).

Tbh, I'd prefer it if the number row (including the left half of the split backspace) was included in the alpha set as well, but it seems like you made an explicit choice to group those with mods so I won't argue the point on that one.

Otherwise, love the idea, love the look, in awe of the lead time (!), and looking forward to hearing about pricing :)

Thanks for the kind words, will strongly consider doing this. If you still require a number row you can use the FROW kitting as a supplement instead since it's all R1 this way the pricing is kept lower for the 40s users whilst having no price increase for most other users.

I’m down like a mofo.

A endorsement from the man himself!

Very cool set and kitting seems very flexible. A couple notes re: 40s kitting - an additional R4 1u for ortho support and potentially 2 more R3 1.25u caps for boards like prime_e which uses 7x 1.25u in total I see this was decided upon in OP. Definitely consider the extra R4 1u though

Question about the Stepped Caps Lock, is the stem indeed going to be centered to that of a non-stepped version or is that just the render?

R4 is pretty much an upsidedown R2. So if you are talking about 12u ortho, you could use that R2 in the 40s kit as an R4 modifier.

That's true, I guess you can use the 13th R4 1u and move it to R2. I think in general it's pretty restrictive on ortho anyway (1x 2u bar and need to use scooped homing on R3 for that to work) but a separate bars kit would solve some of that and I would always use homing anyway. I guess upon second viewing it's pretty restrictive for 40s layouts with a few extra keys here and there, but it meets minimum needs for a lot of popular boards.

If I get enough responses that I think I can split out a uniform R3 kit I will for sure consider it.

That's just my mistake on the render, I double checked with SP it's actually centered on the non-stepped portion, sorry about this.

Literally did not see the google form. Filled out!

As per my form, I think this would be a great opportunity for vendors to stock blank 1u caps. There is literally no source of this in the world.

It would also help support countless ortho and other layout boards, in conjunction with one of the kits for longer caps if needed.

Pack size - I think 20-40 would be a size so people can order multiples to reach the amount they want. I would prob go for a few hundo.

Would you consider adding an Ergo kit?

New kits are in consideration, currently with the responses I have been getting I'm on course for being able to include a bars/r3 uniform r1 kit I'd like slightly more responses stating as such in the forms.
So if you're interested in those kits and reading this consider filling out the google form and putting that in the comments, thanks for all that have responded so far getting some good feedback!

I've also had a few responses asking me to show the prototype spacebar in full on a white background, here it is propped up on a 6.25u and 2u Transparent Durock stab (a pretty good comparison for the clarity levels since I imagine a fair few of you are using them and can have it as a reference point)

Think of which caps you don't need legends for to use your keyboard. Those are prime candidates for which kits to pick up. Polyclear will compliment any SA set.

I'm still getting my head around SA profile and which rows correspond to which on the actual keyboard, so it took me a while to parse these couple of comments. Having worked through it, I see what they mean now and I think I agree with them, but I thought I might as well show my working in case anybody else was struggling to figure it out as I did.

I'm assuming this discussion is about using just the alphas + 40s kit to kit out a 4-row ortho layout like the Planck. If my understanding of SA profile from reading this thread is correct, then the QWERTY row is R2, the ASDF row is R3, the ZXCV row is R4 (which is a flipped R2), and the bottom-row mods are R3. Planck is 12x4, so you need 24 R2/R4 and 24 R3 1U keys to fill it out, or if you use a 2U space you can have 22 R3 1U keys and 1 R3 2U space. Taking just the 1U keys from the alpha and 40s kits, we have:

  • R2: 12 in alpha, 1 in 40s = 13
  • R3: 11 in alpha (+2 homing), 10 in 40s = 21 (or 23 if you include homing). 1 2U space in alpha.
  • R4: 10 in alpha, 1 in 40s = 11

If we swap one of the R2s to an R4 we get exactly the right number of keys for R2/R4. For R3 we can do it assuming we include homing and we make use of the 2U space bar in alphas.

So, if you want to kit out a Planck with fully transparent keys, you can do it with just these two kits! If you want to kit out a Preonic, you can buy the F-Row kit to get the top keys.

If you have a Planck with another SA set on it and you want to replace just the mods with polyclears, however, you're out of luck. The 40s set doesn't include a 2U space, and it doesn't have enough 1U R3 keys to make up the difference (you need 14, assuming you don't have a 2U space, and the 40s kit only includes 10). You also need 4 R2/R4 keys, and the 40s kit includes just 2.

If the 40s kit could be expanded to include 2 more R2/R4 keys, 2 more R3 keys, and a 2U space, then there would be enough to make this work and allow Planck/ortho 40s users to build out their mods without forcing them to buy into alphas.  If this would increase the cost of the 40s kit significantly, though, perhaps it isn't worth it.

Anyway, I'm not advocating for anything in particular here, I just needed to work this out for my own benefit and thought I might as well put it out there in case anyone was wondering, or in case I've calculated wrong in which case please correct me!

I'm looking at adding a bars/support kit in, so if you have any suggestions please fill out the form or message me.
Current inclusions are:
2u, 2.25u, 2x3u
Considerations are also about either doubling the 2u and 2.25u so it's workable as a bars kit without needing to purchase alphas if you decided to not purchase alphas kit.

I have both SP SA (and SP DCS in polycarb) and RAMA Grid - and I hope that the render "is real", but it's very important to see how a full set of prototype of this set will look like on a keyboard.

e.g. RAMA Grid on a keyboard:

I love them. will definitely be getting a set of the modifers. i need legends for my numbers and letters sadly haha. 2 resquests, can you add a 2u shift to the modifer kit for compatibilty on 60% 2u shift boards and if you could include the spacebars in the modifer kit instead of the alpha kit. maybe move the numbers to the alpha kit to balance out the kits.

****in neato Yugi boi.

Side note, odds of another R1 row in the numpad kit? As it sits, right now it's leaving any 6-row standalone numpads out to dry. And it also happens to be 1x R3 short of full grid, which I think I saw pointed out. Could be a neat ortho companion kit with those.

"Are these caps made of polycarbonate?
Yes."

I'll be pleasantly surprised if these are made without significant warping issues if the polycarb cases I've owned are anything to go by.

All of the 9u spacebar protos were perfectly flat. I don't think this is something you should be concerned about.

polycarb cases warp during the milling process, all plastic warps a bit during the injection molding process, but SA is pretty sturdy even when done in ABS

no guarantees of course

All of my samples came out great, and I know a lot people have received some PC caps in their SP Grab Bags. Someone commented recently on one of my reddit posts about how they are clear and unscratched, would appreciate anyone else who's received some to post some pictures.

these are polycarbonate, so im worried that they will darken/yellow, get a frosted look after a short time of use. what are your thoughts on that?

I really want this!

Please, include a couple more 1.5u bars. I am trying to cover an ErgoDox.
I like to make, break & modify stuff via a soldering iron, code or both.

Really cool, excited to mix and match these!

In case it's useful to someone else, here's a little kit calculator to quickly go through different kitting options -- after specifying how many of each kit, it shows what keys you get at what cost. I think you'd have to clone the sheet to edit it.

Thanks, looking forward to the sale!

I was thinking of getting the numpad kit, but then I saw it only has five rows and all my standalone numpads have six rows.  Donutcat pointed this out earlier, but I don't think I ever saw a reply to that question.  Is there any chance of adding another row of R1 keys to the numpad kit, or is it just too late?

Ergo kits usually are failing for most GBs, for this first GB I decided against including the kit because I wasn't sure how much appetite there was going to be for it. It's something I will consider for any future projects for sure if this overall proves to be popular.

It's too late for me to make any additional kitting changes, you can buy the FROW and Numpad to fit it out but that's not ideal solution. I decided against adding the extra row as it increased cost for most use cases, similar to the above answer if this proves to be popular I can consider making the more additions.

Really cool, excited to mix and match these!

Thanks for the kitting guide I hope this is helpful to anyone else will add it to the main post.

Polycarbonate yellowing happens over a very long period of time in direct UV light for a full yellowing you're looking at often 5+ years of direct sunlight. If you're indoors this will not be a problem as UV exposure will be minimal.

This + Dracula modifiers work well with radiant acrylic Mysterium that I am wrapping up right now. After the two years I have waited for Dracula the three months on this is a welcome change of pace.
