Update: Items are on the way from China. And I ordered some Zinc Blank Right-Shift Keys. 20 silver and 20 gold ones. Please PM me as soon as you can if you want some of these and need them shipped with your zinc order.

Zinc is back! with more choices! Let's get started with the 2nd round.

There are two colors available as gold and silver. They are colored by electroplating.

Also two types of keys as blank and legends ones are available. The printed ones are made by laser.

MKC said some of these zinc keycaps would fail in the process of producing, and even sometimes the failing chance is pretty high. Therefore he can't guarantee that he would give me exactly what I ordered. So I'll just follow first come first serve and prior ship the keycaps to those who first ordered. If you don't get what you originally ordered, I'll do the full refunds. But overall, no need to worry about that too much, I'll try to make sure everyone will get what he/she wanted.

Please notice that these zinc keycaps would fit very tightly, there's no solution so far due to the mold of producing these keys. So when you wanna pull out the zinc keycaps from your keyboard, remember don't pull them too hard, just do it slowly and gently.

The deadline will be 4/30/2012. Estimate shipping date is between 4/30 - 5/15.

I bought some gold and silver W A S D from the last batch and the only issues was some markings on the sides of the gold keys. My sets of silver ones were perfect. I can upload some pictures but they are taken on a phone at night so the quality is fairly bad.

The right shift on a Ducky 1008 is a 3.00 correct? I would be in for a full blank modifier set if i can get a shift to match the rest.
Maybe ill have to buy a new keyboard

Edit:

Here are some bad pictures of the QC on the last batch

How do they feel? Do they feel cold and metallic or just like plastic that has had a metallic coating on them?

The blemish problem has been solved. There's no more finger print. But the tight-fitting problem is still there, it couldn't be solved since MKC can't change the mold of making these keys.

Many people have asked about that. I tried, but MKC said the zinc spacebar is too heavy and he has stopped making it. But he'll probably produce something like aluminum spacebar or other kinds of metal material in the future.

Yeah there was a finger print problem on those Gold keys during the 1st round. But it has been solved in this round.

The right shift on a Ducky, Filco, Leopold, etc. should be 2.75.  I'm working on it and trying to get MKC starts making the other modifier keys.

They do feel cold since they are real metal keycaps. It's not just a metalic coating on them.

I think the Warcraft kit is referring to the Starcraft 2 related keycaps. I didn't see any WC in there, although I didn't check all of them so I might be mistaken.

Thank you Rumudiez! Can't believe I made such a stupid mistake. I meant to write Starcraft, but somehow I wrote Warcraft. -_-

Comes down to preference in the end. I think asking what does the key mean to you and which color fits your taste best are the better questions.

I noticed in the sample pictures that the Protoss logo is misprinted for the gold example. If you look at the silver and gold versions, the gold one seems cut off on the left.

Will that be fixed for this batch of gold keycaps?

MKC is considering making that, but the aluminium material costs more than zinc. We'll see if he can bring that out.

The zinc spacebar is too heavy which is why he no longer makes it. But the aluminium spacebar is lighter than zinc spacebar.

The tight-fitting issue is still there, it can't be rectified since it would have to change the whole mold of making the keycaps which costs really a lot. But I'll keep asking MKC about whether or not he can find some other molds in China.

I wondered about that.  The stem looks a bit squirrely to me.

I think it's from a guy in China named 李哥, and his English name is Vortex. Really drooling on those keycaps. :P But it will probably take a long time in order to show up in the market.

Feng I would be interested in the wrist rest but I would like to know is the printed "BLIZZARD" layout in between two layers of plastic joint together in a two-piece design? or is it printed directly underneath one single block of plastic/acrylic?

Thank you. I will confirm to you my order:
-- BLIZZARD Tenkeyless wrist rest
-- Shiny gold printed enter
-- Shiny silver Starcraft II tab (if you don't have it I will take any shiny silver Starcraft II key instead) (if you don't have a shiny silver Starcraft II, I will take a shiny silver printed tab instead)

Just checked with MKC, he said the image is in between two layer of plastic.

Sorry, but it's $6.5 for each one, $45.5 for 7 keys.

That was way too expensive. But really high quality though. Hopefully I can do a group buy for those awesome titanium keys, but the maker is not available at this time, need to wait untill.... he doesn't even know. :(

Yep, 60-80 dollars. I wonder about a magnesium space bars. I think magnesium is made to be light but I have no idea about its other characteristics.

Okay Feng my order will be... Actually I will take only the BLIZZARD Tenkeyless wrist rest. Can you tell me about the shipping to Canada? It can't be only 4 dollars (that would be for key caps), lol.

Also, I will pay you but I won't be able to give to you a shipping address just yet because I will be moving in late April / early May, and I still don't know where I'm going. I might also ask you to hold the wrist rest a little longer with you before shipping it, if I'm not yet arrived to my place. Are you O.K. with that? :-/

Thank's a lot!

Magnesium is light and quick to machine. You can apparently machine it twice as fast as aluminium, which means it's really quick! So if we get hold of magnesium, it should be easy to make something out of it. Since machining will be cheap the material cost will be the most we will pay, that will still be a lot I think if... If feng can get his hands on it ;)

(just checked and it's about $40/kg on the market, will be even more for feng I think)
Edit: you will also need special coolant for it, water reacts with magnesium when hot...

Please ask him about the titan as well. I love it :-).

Titanium is not sure yet, because it's not easy to find the material. But aluminum keycaps will be available.

They are both electric plated. The shiny ones look shiny. :P The light would reflect through the surface and it's easy to leave finger print on it. On the other side, you won't be able to leave your finger print on the matt ones.

Yes he can. But there's a minimum 10 orders required for a custom image. Not sure I'll bring over more choices for the wrist rest, seems like no many people are interested.

Oh... well maybe not much interest for Team Liquid, but I'm sure many people would buy if it was the geekhack logo. The current designs aren't interesting :\

That what I thought. :( I don't even know why MKC made this image. Maybe I should ask iMav about the copy right things, and then we'll see what image would look good.

Here's hoping you were using a PCB mounted switches. Plated mounted would be such a headache to fix.

I guess I should invest in some sort of drill bit or tiny file.

Yep. I need to widen the stems for the 2 white plastic pieces of the stabilizer because they're not in all the way, but I made sure to widen the middle stem for the switch enough so I wouldn't need to worry about breaking it every time I removed the key. So right now it's just slightly higher than it should be.

I became fully aware of the tight-fitting problems after my initial search for metal/aluminum keycaps months ago. I was expecting it and ready with tools. The stems were easy enough to widen.

Pliers, small hammer, heat, and a thick wire that gets wider on the end. Helpful for the bottom of the stems which were hardest to widen.

I pulled off a key and it def came off easier than without silicon grease. In terms of the feel, they definitely feel weighty (you'll notice it when you hold them). I'm using them on my noppoo choc mini and depending on how hard/fast you hit them you can hear a 'ding', which I actually like. Overall they're pretty unique and I'm glad I got them! Keep in mind that the added weight may have some negative effects to your springs over time. I have all my alt/ctrl/shift keys as zinc so I don't think I have to worry about it too much.

Side note: Depending on your lighting/surroundings the silver will look gold. I have a sky light over my desk so during the day they look gold depending on the angle, but at night they look silver. You may also have a side effect of inquisitive coworkers looking at your keyboard in awh due to the new bling. I'll have a pic up soon once I get one last key.

I had a shot at them with a Dremel with a diamond bit today like Ripster suggested and it went so-so. The bit I have is tapered and the thickness at the bottom of the bit is about right but it doesn't go that far down into the stem of the keycap, so I can only use the narrower tip. I'll have to find a different bit. I bought enough keycaps to cover a whole Poker so I have quite a bit of work ahead of me lol.

For those who have experience with a Dremel, what's the best way to go about trimming things out? Do you:
1. apply pressure to the surface with the side of the bit
2. angle the bit and go at the surface with the tip (or maybe the side of the head?) of the bit
3. other!?

Today was my first day using a Dremel so any tips would be welcome! As a side note, it doesn't really seem possible to screw up. I thought I'd go slow in case I made the stems too wide but that hasn't been an issue at all. I just worked on two keycaps and they almost fit now, but not quite. Going to wait till I get a proper bit to continue with the other 60 or so I have.

I'm still waiting to try my keys out, dsjbirch. I'll let you all know what they are like on my poker when I get to the states again. I will be picking up some silicone grease to see if it makes it easier, but we all know by now that these are a very tight fit.

I tried dremeling them a bit, and maybe it's just my inexperience with it, but it's harder than it seems. First, it's very slow to do, second, I ended up making one of them a bit too loose since it's hard to make sure that you are dremeling the cruciform wider evenly rather than just in one direction, and third, the bit I was using broke, so that brought an end to that. So I just ended up forcing them on and it's pretty obvious that they're never going to come off.

That's okay with me however as I don't intend to change them and they do look pretty cool. I'll upload a picture a bit later. I bought a full set which covers everything except the spacebar and the enter key (he has an enter available but it hasn't shipped yet). I haven't put on a few of the keys because I have to do something first before I put them on and lose the ability to take them off.

But, I don't own a dremel, so what's plan B? I have a powerdrill. Could that work?

Any more success stories?

Well actually, my Dremel was plan A, but I just ended up making things worse by loosening three of them too much as those three don't fit so well anymore. I sort of just gave up and really forced them on, but it's quite clear they are never coming off now. So long as you're absolutely sure you'd never need to change them, it's okay I guess...

You could probably get it right with a Dremel, but it would require crazy amounts of care and patience, which is not something viable for the amount of keys I bought. Also, since my Dremel bit broke while doing it (since it's a small bit it's more fragile) that really decided things for me.

The larger keys that were made later fit nicely. Part of the problem is that I'm using them on a Poker perhaps and the PCB is quite notorious for flexing, so when you try to take them off it makes it want to bend a lot rather than coming off nicely. Still though, they're pretty nice, but I just don't ever intend to try to remove them now that they're on.
