Excited for this. I like the idea of a 40%, but I don't relish the missing symbol keys.

Because the cap facing renders were kinda hidden away in a link I did not notice. After I saw them I think I would really prefer v1 layout over the 60% cap compatibility even at the cost of compatibility.

I think v1 looks more symmetric too

I love the layout and the renders look great.  Sad the indicator LEDs are gone, but I appreciate the extra width for compatibility.

It looks like TMOv2 reception has gone well so far. Pfu, that's great to see! Thank you for the memes and great responses!

I'll try and not quote each message and just reply to most of them in one bigger message from time to time.

For those who'd like to follow along on Discord and/or chat more about it with others - there's a channel for TMOv2 on CannonKeys server.

Then on to some questions that I've seen here:

  • Alps support - No. There wasn't a single Alps TMO50 built that I know of.
  • Symmetry - It's still there. Blockers are symmetric as R3 and R4 is. Only the top row isn't.
  • Base kit compatibility - sub60% layout still may require 40's kit to get right legends but TMOv2 aims to give you all profile correct keycaps. Also not all 40% kits hit MOQ.
  • Indicator LED cluster - I didn't find a use for it on my TMO50 so sorry :D
  • 2.75u/2.25u split-space - we'll see if that's possible but given there's a whooping 22 RGB LEDs around the perimeter of the PCB this split-space configuration may be not doable

Thank you for the support guys.

HERE WE GO BOYS TMO50 layout is the greatest thing ever let me tell you sir. First of all class ic inspirations on the HHKB blocker style IT also has the ; and ' kjeys unless other competitors in the 40% space which I find completely unreplaceable in layers it also has extra keys for macros (read: artisans- I absolutely love the layout where you have numbers/!@#$%^ that replace qwerty it means i can type for long periods of time wihtout twisting my hands at all whereas on a normal board you ahve to twist your wrists sometimes to type for me I just have to hold down left space and click asdf to get to numbers It's also just gorgeous IMO Ano quality is good, engraving is good, I like how he made it so you can buy a 40% sized board/layout but not need to buy 40% sized modifiers for your keyboard so you can use base kits and uh yeah that's it That's why TMO50 is my every day board I literally am typing on it right now and have used it every single day at work for the last 4 months 0 inftention to ever stop

Great Board! Looking forward to this one!

Just a thought.

If youre going to offer a full space option, should it not be 1.5 - 7 - 1.5 to make it nice and symmetrical?

Obviously if someone is using full space, they don't care as much about functionality.

Just a thought. Id prefer it that way personally.

I understand that some people might not need the indicator leds and I can live with that.  They are vital to me on my minivan.  I use the left space bar as a function key or backspace most of the time. However, a double tap on the right control turns it into a normal space bar for gaming.  the indicator comes on to let me know i'm good for gaming.  I use another indicator to let me know that I am tying numbers.  When I hold down my number function modifier, that led comes on.  It's just something that helped me learn to type on a 40% board faster.

Agree with @pixelpusher. The LEDS are a great help for me also using the MiniVan to know which layer I’m in. Sometimes I thought the keys were not registering when in fact I’ve locked myself in a separate games layer. Just a great option to have.

The original TMO was one of the first keyboards that got me interested in the hobby due to its aesthetics.  Even if it may not be practical for everyone, I felt that the LED cluster was a really nice, eye-catching detail that made it stand out (and others have mentioned that it can come in handy for layers).  If it doesn't make it this round, I hope it makes the next one.   I'm excited to see the upcoming builds!

So, just a question (not asking you to change the board):
What about a second column on the right side?
I personally think it would look better that way.
But maybe people are just not that into symmetry like me?

Hmm,
I would say if you that "B" in qwerty layout as the center,
the V1 actually is more symmetrical?

Hey guys!

It's that time of the day when I'll reply to some of your messages.

Thanks for the opinion Dixie and I value your input! :)
For others - I've discussed this with Dixie before writing this message. Just want to make it clear that I'm not judging Dixie's sense of design (and we all know he's a God).

I get that it'd look more symmetrical but practicality still is better over looks. I understand that a 6.25u spacebar configuration isn't the most pleasing to look at but it's the only one you'd actually be able to use effectively. If you go with a 1.5u / 7u / 1.5u bottom row you have what sort of keymapping? Something like Alt / Space / Win? It could work but given that Control would be on the left side, you'd have to do something like Ctrl+Win+arrow key combo while trying to press Fn+L+Win with your right. Kinda funky ain't it?
It means sacrificing real functionality just to get a certain "look". Looks are important but there's a fine line between going all-out or keeping it practical.

---

Regarding the LED indicators. Some of you make valid points that you'd like to have a layer indicator. But given we have a certain timeframe for the GB we (I & Upas) wouldn't like to risk setting a later GB date by re-doing PCB and case design. These changes would mean some re-routing, double-checking and ordering a new batch of test PCBs that Upas and I would then need to solder. And then order new case prototype which would against cost us time and money to do.
What we can suggest is offer a clear polycarbonate option as an extra so people can program their underglow LEDs to change color for some sort of layer indication.

---

nguyenhimself - thanks for the input but I don't like it. Symmetry or not but it's not the look I'd go for. TMO has a specific layout that I'd like to keep the way it is. Would like to add that an approximate GB time has been set so making big changes like you would suggest isn't an easy task.

---

Audax, we can arrange something if you want them so bad! :D

Guess I will have to hope for the v3 to get those indicator LEDs again, still one of my favorite smaller boards in terms of looks and usability though. You won't need much luck with the GB, but cheers on another round of a great board.

I'd also rather see black instead of grey agan for colors on this run.

Do I see it right that the 22 underglow LEDs are only usable with the polycarbonate version? All other versions are fully closed aluminum cases right?

Yes but you will have the option to get an extra translucent clear bottom as an add-on if you go for an aluminium case.

I really prefer the v1 variant that had the shorter 0.5u width. That small amount made that highly admired extra compact fit that comes in par with a regular 60%. Keycaps were very approachable with most gmk 40s kit. The most reluctant key was an R3 1.25 ctrl. Moulds for it exist but not enough usage/demand, a few gmk kits had it, but that was the only tiny thing about it that's tedious.

The four LEDs were also a nice touch for the v1, it's a neat detail similar to the C70. If you make a v3, I'd really love to see those two details added back.
Are there any thoughts on releasing a handful of units in v1 alongside this IC or as a separate?

I agree here -- it seems like this form factor will usually require a 40s kit anyway, so the width change doesn't seem like a big improvement to me.

But more than that I really miss the notification LEDs! Please consider adding them back in! They were a distinctive part of the design, and quite useful.
