[GB] Saturn-60 Round 2 (in-production) ♠ Ace KB Co. ♠
« on: Wed, 13 September 2023, 18:00:32 »
Hello again Geekhack,

In 2020 we created a bent steel 60% called the Saturn-60 and now we are selling it again!

Pre-Orders are currently open on our site https://acekeyboard.co/  GB is slated to end Sep. 18-ish, and we are really keen on delivering all kits before the end of 2023.
There are not any intl. vendors at this time, but I am emailing Jae @ Prototypist.

Price $350, MOQ 100, which is now reached. (thank you to everyone who purchased!!!)

Actual pictures: https://www.flickr.com/photos/195073423@N04/sets/72177720301072773/
Typing test:

Our instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acekeyboardco/

Improvements from R1:

  • Feet are now push-in, which also holds the rubber sheet in place during assembly.
  • Foam will come with magnetic strips to hold it on.
  • Side Glow will come with flying leads and screw terminal blocks to make it easier

Colors:

More

Mint in the gloss finish was way too difficult to QC, we will try in the future to bring it back if possible, maybe in a hammer or texture finish.

Plates/Layouts:
-Only brushed alum and brushed stainless plate finishes, for the Purist and Utilitarian plate layouts.

-No Boardwalk (because I don't know where to get any pcbs, however there are still BW plates in stock on our store)

Badges/Handles
-Default Badges are Stainless/Black and can upgrade to brass badges
-Default handles are clear anodized alum, can upgrade to brass, stainless, or black anodized alum.

Thanks for reading!

Approved :thumb:

PSA to prospective buyers:
Group Buys are inherently risky endeavors. There is an element of risk involved with collecting payment before the item has been produced and resulting uncertainty during manufacturing / subsequent operations. We urge all GB organizers to consider (and document) these risks, and want to make it clear to all who consider purchasing that these risks are present.

If you are unfamiliar with the Group Buy model, please read this primer - Group Buy FAQ / Buying Guidelines

This PSA is new and will become standard on all Group Buys moving forward. It is not posted on this GB in isolation and is not singling this organizer out in particular as someone to be wary of.

Damn.. I was so excited to see V2 has both HHKB top and split space bar support. Perfection!

... until I saw the monstrosity which is the 'utilitarian' plate required for split support, and that the HHKB-compatible purist plate only supports a long space bar.

So painfully close :( Fingers crossed for V3...

It is possible to cut your own custom plate and mount it on wedges (wedges and plate templates here: https://github.com/AceKeyboardCo/saturn60). I do wish there was a universal plate option, but if anyone really wants a specific layout that's not officially supported.

Also simple things like
- colors not being labeled in the images in the original post
- when you select a color in the dropdown on the store page, the picture doesn't update.
- PCB layout KLE or image is not present in the PCB github
- No option for a blank plate (though files are provided in the github to make your own blank plate, this isn't stated anywhere on the store page, and also they seem to be from R1 and I don't know whether they fit R2)
- In the badge store item, it says "Extra Data Plates are not available - only Saturn-60 badges."; I have no idea what this sentence means. What's a "data plate"?
- In the preorder page it says "Silver Badges" under "Default kit includes", but the product photo shows a brass badge, and also I think they mean _stainless steel badge_ is included? Surely it's not silver. If it is silver, I think they mean silver-colored anodized aluminium, and not actually silver. Like the handle, where it says "Silver aluminium handle".
- Is "Heatshield" stainless steel? Is it raw steel? I realise it says underneath that "Heatshield may have ..., corrosion" and that many people think that stainless steel can't corrode; they're wrong, it can. What makes stainless steel stainless isn't actually the steel, it's an oxide layer on top of it. Cutting it, scratching it, and otherwise damaging the oxide layer exposes it just like any other untreated steel. The oxide layer will self-heal most of the time though, and can be repaired/regenerated with acid solutions.

I'll stop now :-D

These small things just irk me, and really turns me off the whole project.

I really like the design though, and wish you all the best.
Let the Holy Handgrenades rain.
Hammering on an old Happy Hacking Pro 2. Still going strong!
