There was one in the old thread IIRC.

But the problem is, the usual English pronunciation is broken, because of English. That's why most native English speakers can't speak Czech or Japanese without a horrible accent.

this is also part of it

Topper. It rhymes with Copper.

But seriously, it's pronounced "toe-prah" and rhymes with Oprah.

You guys forget what Topre stands for

Tokyo Press

If we go by japanese pronounciation of that it sounds something like toe-prey

Created by Japanese, so shouldn't we go by Japanese pronounciation?

Close to "toh pruh" or "Toh Pluh"

This is correct.

Toe-Pray.

東プレ is a three syllable word. Toe. Puh. Ray. :]

It gets shortened to TOE-PRAY because of how the Japanese language works. Kind of like how "desu" is usually pronounced "dess"

From these latter posts it sounds as though the typically assumed pronunciation is correct, as if the e was with acute like Topré.

Well, Canadians have center as "centre" with the same pronunciation, so I initally kind of read it as Toe-per in my own little world.

Most people that I've heard speak it (just online videos really), say it as you do.

English user here, I'm similar, but I say toe-preh switches. lel.

Don't worry that also applies for french and spanish...

I believe english native could only adapt (read plug and play) in german. It seems like everything else is just out of bound.

Like when you listen to them speaking french or spanish it's funny also cause they don't get any genders right so they say "le beau femme" or "el bonito senora" so it sounds real funny.

But don't get me wrong as a french native i also speak broken english lol.

Not even German, because of R. The thing is, different languages assume the whole mouth in different positions. For example, when I'm trying to imitate Oxford English, it's impossible to pronounce Ř, but it's absolutely not a problem in Czech.

Well, there's no ray in Press, so the "correct" pronounciation of Topre should be toe-preh.

I was going with the English pronounciation of Tokyo. If you want to get Japanese then toh-preh would probably be more correct. Although it's hard to convey Japanese pronounciation to English readers in plain text.

toe-pray, or if you don't pray to toes, tope-ray.

It has to contain "Ray" for me. Maybe it's cus that's my name? Idk...

Plus to be honest, this pronunciation makes it sound more "elite" or more "luxurious" IMO, which is how it should be. top-er or toe-pruh just seems mehh to me...

東プレ (Tō pu re)

東 - Tō
プ - pu
レ - re

Tō as in "toe"

Pu-re as in "preh"

The pu-re part is not as emphasized as "toe-pray", yet not as low as a "toe-pruh". I'd say it's kinda inbetween "ay" and "uh", so "preh" would be more accurate (but try not to pronounce the "h").

I say "rubber dome"

I just pronounce it To , as in Tokyo, and Pre as in press. I noticed that it is a little different from most people (as I saw in various youtube videos) and most people tend to say Pre like Pray.

Does it really matter though?

I pronounced it [to.pe`r] (X-SAMPA) but I didn't realize it was Japanese. Also, thats because its similar to how my name is pronounced: [zai.be`r]. However, knowing its Japanese doesn't help because neither <p> nor <pr> is valid in Japanese syllabary as far as I'm aware. So it must be from English or another language that's loaned in. You'll notice that プ is Katakana which is reserved generally for transliterating non-Japanese words, so that theory seems to hold up. That said, [to.prei] is probably the correct pronunciation.

Re: How do you pronounce Topre?

I pronounced it [to.pe`r] (X-SAMPA) but I didn't realize it was Japanese. Also, thats because its similar to how my name is pronounced: [zai.be`r]. However, knowing its Japanese doesn't help because neither <p> nor <pr> is valid in Japanese syllabary as far as I'm aware. So it must be from English or another language that's loaned in. You'll notice that プ is Katakana which is reserved generally for transliterating non-Japanese words, so that theory seems to hold up. That said, [to.prei] is probably the correct pronunciation.
There's no I in PRESS.
