Title: [IC] TX87 - New Korean TKL Custom Keyboard
Post by: yuiop on Tue, 16 September 2014, 12:15:53

There's a new custom keyboard being developed in Korea @ kbdlab (what new?)

It's at the prototyping stage.  I'll try to post the actual photos as they become available.

I spoke with one of the developers and it sounds like they are willing to make it available to GHers as long as there's enough interest ;)

It will be affordable, relatively speaking :-X
I don't have the exact pricing but I was told to expect around 200USD including the PCB.  But that's before shipping and other fees etc.

Some bullet points....
- KMAC2/Orion like structure.  Top/Plate/Bottom, bottom is angled
- Top : anodized aluminum with many color options available
- Plate : stainless steel (heavier) or anodized aluminum
- Bottom : CNC'd Polycarbonate.  It's designed to allow the LED light through
- There's a 2mm stainless steel plate mounted on the bottom to add weight
- PCB : programmable of course. supports Winkey/Winkeyless/ISO/etc.
- Supports in-switch LEDs & RGB LED underneath the PCB (like this (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=35864.msg1451812#msg1451812))

So if you're interested, show your interest in this thread :thumb:

Does the plate allow switch top removal?

Yes, you can remove switch tops without desoldering.

yuiop, is this a87 or b87 compatible?
or in other words, is the usb header on the right (between F12 and PrtScn) or on the left (between Esc and F1)?

This is A87 compatible housing.

I'm new to the custom korean keyboard scene. Would full assembly (e.g. switch/led soldering) services be offered as part of this possible GB?

Assembly will be offered.

Any chance the maker can do Alps?

MX only :(

I don't know the exact angle but I think these will be flatter than the Orion/Lightsaver which is 11 degree slanted.  I'll ask.

This keyboard is 7.5 degrees tilted.
In comparison, KMAC2 is 7 degrees.  Orion/Lightsaver/Eagle/Viper are 11 degrees.

If you prefer to use it at a higher angle, you can just use taller bumpons in the back.

I don't think assembly service will be offered as part of GB.
how about the resistors? are they presodered like Duck's pcb?

Resistors and Diodes are all pre-soldered.
There will be spots for 22 surface mounted RGB LEDs.  They will likely come pre-soldered as well.

Interesting, I wonder how a SS bottom plate would look like with a PC bottom layer with the bottom mounted LEDs.

Very interested, especially if it's less than $300 with shipping. Although I would definitely want to see a prototype before deciding. I am trying to imagine how the polycarbonate housing would show things like screws, screw holes and how even LED diffusion can be.

I really wish we could move away from the angled bottoms. They just make the keyboard unnecessarily heavy(cost more to ship, but feels great), and having adjustable feet seems like a muck better option.

Man, I was waiting for another TKL with a natural angle since I dislike feet but I really don't like the look of this one. Too many edges and angles. But I'm sure for $200 a lot of people will have fun with this!

Does the plate allow switch top removal?

I personally think there's more pros than cons with angled housing.  Also those feet are rarely 'adjustable' unless you get another set with different height.

My Kmac has feet that have removable "washer" layers for adjustability. I am glad you think there are more pros with angled bottoms, please list them here for us. I would much rather have to buy separate feet, or be able to remove them all together instead of being forced into having an angled board.

+1

That permanent angle is enough to keep me from buying into this regardless of price. I actually got into the mechanical keyboard hobby because I was given a Dell rubber dome (http://www.amazon.com/Dell-F8M3Y-KB113P-Computer-Compatible/dp/B009UZQTT2) keyboard at work that had a permanent angle and I hated it so much I started researching for a quality replacement.

First of all, I'm not trying to convince anyone to like angled keyboard.  If you don't like it, that's fine.  Then this keyboard is not for you.

I personally don't care about having adjustable feet.  I'd much rather have the extras weight and stability of angled keyboards.  If I need to raise it up a little, I'd use taller bumpons in the back.  Problem solved.  I have KMAC2 and KMAC 1.2.  Both have same the PCB, same mx clear stems, same spring weight etc.   Only difference is KMAC2 is angled and weighs about twice as much.   To ME, KMAC2 feels and types much better.

IMO KMAC2 angle is perfect, not too much and not too little. Do we know what kind of angle this board will have?

I have been wanting a b.87 winkeyless.kr board with the rgb underlighting like OP mentioned for awhile now. However, I have no idea how I would get one as I don't know any Korean proxies that deal with this sort of thing.

If the RGBs look as good on this board, I am definitely in. How do the leds shine through? Is there going to be a clear acrylic center layer?

Anyway, It is great that this is being made available to us here. Can't wait to see more pics!

I believe the bottom layer is CNC'd acrylic. Just going by what he says in the OP. Guessing what we see in the renderings is a separate metal piece which is added for weight in the center of the acrylic bottom.

Cnc'ed polycarbonate. Like the middle layer of gon boards. This probably why the price is cheaper than full ALU boards. Makes for night lighting effects too.

Acrylic =/= polycarbonate. Just FYI. Polycarbonate is much more easily machined and is denser in my opinion. Polycarbonate is also called by a tradename Lexan. A use of Lexan is bulletproof windows.

After shipping and other fees; under $300 would be a steal.

Have a full board, 60% and am now looking at a TKL. Filcos are about $160, (after tax) in Canada, so for a bit more I could get A LOT more.

Since there isn't even a sample yet, I'm sure it's a while out.

The more I look at the Photos and the more a look at other customs....the *cough* Harder *cough* I get.

After shipping and other fees; under $300 would be a steal.

Hey, this place will make you so Hard that walking through doorways side on will be impossible.  Your wife would appreciate it immensely because she'll never need that dildo again  :thumb: .

Do the right thing and always get in on any Group Buys involving keyboard purchases, she will love it more than you 8) .

No to 84 key top case.

Prototype sample will be available in a few weeks.  GB will probably start a few weeks after that.  They won't accept orders until everything is ready to be produced.

IC thread for TX87 on a Chinese forum says 84 layout could be an option if there is enough interest, for anyone that is wondering about the same. I'm super interested in 84 layout personally, but will jump in anyway for 86/87 layout.

How so?  The top is meant to be different from the rest of the case, as seen on the design sketch.  Translucent goes well with copper imo :)

P.S.: I hope this is going to be well-anodized aluminum, not very thinly anodized aluminum.  LZ Aluminum Skin kit was very cheap, but the aluminum parts were pretty scratch-prone, as the anodized layer seemed thin or perhaps lower grade aluminum combined with thinner anodized layer.

Hey I've already told the producers GHers like purple even before you guys started chanting that color  :-X

Classic colors like Black/Silver and maybe Red will be done regardless.
They can do other colors like blue/gold/purple/etc, provided there's enough demand.

I have no clue about copper, whether it is even possible to have aluminum anodized like that.
Some of those pics look like copper-plated, not anodized.  I don't think anodized aluminum is supposed to be shiny like that.

Yeah, it exists as a color dye.

And raw aluminum finish dictates the anodized finish.  It can be shiny, bead blasted, brushed, etc.

Anyway, I just offered it as a suggestion of something different vs. the standard colors, because it's indeed available, along with other unusual but neutral colors, such as bronze and brown.

Official word from the producers -

They can do whatever color you guys want - copper, brown, purple, baby pink, sky blue, lime green, gun metal gray or whatever.  They are very flexible when it comes to anodizing colors.  But there is moq - 30 per color.  This may sound a lot - and it probably is - but keep in mind, this GB is being run jointly with Korean/Chinese communities so we might see some weird colors being made, hopefully

So if you have specific color you want, please post here.  It may get added to the interest check which is coming pretty soon.  Attaching some sample pics would be nice as well since it helps us visualize a beautiful keyboard in your color ;)

Springs would be a great option. I have heard 68-70g springs are close to vintage blacks. Having vintage blacks would have really made this GB too good to be true lol. It is too awesome as it is.

Will There be an option of case only? If so id totally be interested.

Yes.  You will be able to customize your order pretty much any way you want.
If you're only interested in case, you need to make sure your pcb fits.  This is A87-compatible case.

Springs alone don't make vintage blacks.  It's the stem that makes the biggest difference.  The problem is those are not something you can just buy off of a vendor.

No

I'm interested in a blue plate color. :) If there ends up not being enough orders for blue, then I might end up going for purple.

Wow, if the prototypes look that good, the final product is really going to be amazing. Almost seems like a hybrid of a b.87 and a KMAC. The RGB LEDs will look great in that bottom casing as well. Thanks for the update, I will continue to follow this closely.

Looking forward to seeing some MORE prototypes being made.  Would be nice to have a complete clear based housing so that you can ogle at the Cherry Goodness beneath the front plate.

Just have them do ONE Clear Polycarbonate plate which has a frosted finish to it, because there is a complete lack of any ALL-Clear Keyboard Casings here on Geekhack  :thumb: .

Prototyping is taking longer than expected. As for when the actual GB will start, your guess is as good as mine. I was hoping we can start taking orders by the end of Nov.  We'll see how this round of prototyping goes.  I'll probably have some pics soon.

As for the top plate colors, there will be many.  As long as MOQ (20-30) is met any reasonable color can be done (no white).  black, silver, red and probably blue will be made regardless.

Another thing I should mention - this keyboard will have a pretty solid weight to it.  It will probably weigh as much as typical non-angled full alu boards like KMAC1.

I think you meant poll, but I agree a poll would be nice if someone could make one to see how much interest there is in certain colors. I have found a couple pics that show how different colors look on anodized aluminum. This first one is of some generic Chinese drip tips for vaping, but I think it shows the standard colors on aluminum well:

I prefer "B" which is a gunmetal gray similar to what you would see on some Korean customs like KMACs or the 356.2. "J" is what I think of as "Sky Blue." This second pic is of a teal anodized knife. My second choice would be of a teal like this:

Some other colors I can think of are bronze(which has also been mentioned), electric blue, or orange.

The blue with the Granite Set might be one the the sexiest setups around. I use a DSA keycaps at work but i ONLY use it for typing we will see how i like them for gaming. ( Only a week away )

I'm very excite....rock hard excited!

Full assembly. It will likely be done in Korea.
They already have most of the parts on hand - switches, stabs, custom springs, switch LEDs and etc.
You can customize in terms of what switches/springs/LEDs you want.
I'm not sure about lubing but I think it can be done as well.
You will get a fully built board - minus keycaps - delivered right to your door.

I don't have the pricing but it will be reasonable.

Do you know if it will be possible to order just the components so we can assemble it ourselves? Would that chance the pricing at all?

Hopefully we have some good news soon.

Black polycarb bottom won't let much light through so you might want to consider that.

I see, thank you very much kin for explaining about the different size. I'm guessing since aluminum bottoms won't give out light LED spreading (obviously), you're going to think and design up another bottom design? If so, take your time :) I look back at it and I don't really mind the different size, I'm just glad an aluminum bottom is becoming available for us!

Seems like the PCB is still a bit delayed, nothing you or us can do to change it but wait.
Thank you again kin!

Black PC bottom is more expensive 1.5times. So I have no plan to make Black PC bottom. Sorry  :(

This is the bottom I'm referring to:

Are you saying that won't be an option?  Just trying to confirm.

I think that Alu Bottom is better than Black PC Bottom at the same price.
How about Alu Bottom?

I did not realize the photo was just a prototype.  Thank you for clarifying.

Yes, Aluminum would be preferable if it's the same price as the PC would have been.  But don't go out of your way on my account.

Still so excited for this! Quick question though, would this case be compatible with a phantom pcb and phantom compatible stainless steel plate? I have the two and would prefer to use them if it could keep the price down.

Which way does the connector need to be in order to fit in this case?

On the upside GON has the option to solder the connector soldered on the top side therefore it should be compatible making this case look that much sexier to me.....

very tempted. is cable exit only on the right side though? or what is the notch above the end of the F-row?
I don't really understand how all these things work but do I have to buy a controller for it? and controller is what decides NKRO over USB and such right?

impressive work, though, I must say.

Looks like the mini usb port is where the notch is on the F-Row. I think controller will already be soldered onto the board, as most Korean customs have this feature.

Nerd looks like a87(right side usb connecter). so you may use Nerd PCB on tx87. but you must use longer usb mini jack.

Can anyone comment on the quality of the components/manufacture of the PCB. I kind of feel like I got a little f***ed on my TrikX (don't get me wrong - it's my daily driver but after all of the hullabaloo about the soldering and chatter, etc. I'd like to know that if I'm going to drop cash on this it isn't just some hobbyist clusterf***k).

Have a Beautiful Day,

I hope if nothing else, we can get the design file of this case.. at least the bottom

TX87alps GB will open soon. Only for ALPS.
(PCB for Cherry is not ready yet)

Ki! I really love this TX87alps!

But I have some questions.

Will alps switches and keycaps be available during the GB? I want an alps board really badly, but I am afraid of not being able to get all the parts.

To make TX87alps... you need SG, OldDell, NewDell or appleExt2.
Now go to Ebay, and Buy one. :)

Don't sell your car.. (The car is more valuable than keyboard)

I sold some keyboards(LZ-SE, S, etc.) in order to buy a piano for my son.
sometimes I missed my keyboards.
but I was happy to hear my son play the piano.

Keyboard is just keyboard! :)

Wow
After reading thru every single post on the last 14 pages I couldn't be more stoked about this!  :thumb:

Definitely put me on the interest list for 2 full cases and atleast one additional top plate for color variation! xD

I'm considering using a GON PCB atm, but I'm slightly confused by the kmac vs a87 question...

You guys can use the KMAC2 (GON NerD) PCB though no?
Here are some pics...
(Attachment Link)
(Attachment Link)

Now GON has both a87 (http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/pcbs-and-controllers/60-nerd-tkl-ver20-pcb.html) and kmac (http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/group-buys/115-nerd-tkl-for-kmac.html) PCBs.
As far as I understand what has been discussed before, both kmac and a87 (with top mounted usb connector) would fit just fine except the usb connecter is shorter on the a87 so the plug will need to be longer (as it sits farther inside the case)?

Right. You can use A87 PCB in the KMAC with long mini USB connector.

Thx for the quick reply kin! :)

I will definitely end up buying more then one case since there are so many possible options.

The red top from the mockup is pretty much a must have but I also love how black or grey works great with any led color...
Good thing there will be additional anodized top plates available! xD

The only thing I could possibly still ask for, since there is already a black PC bottom, is if it would be possible to make an option for a white PC bottom by any chance?

A white PC bottom would be awesome since rarely any cases are available in white since it can't be anodized, so the polycarbonate feels like a chance to get white for once maybe...
Also the original renders make the transparent bottom look like a solid white and it just looks amazing in those pictures!

I feel like a white bottom with red top might be the closest to those original renders since it looked white to me at first. :)

Only transparent PC and Alu bottom will be made.

I'm super stoked for the case and can't wait for this to happen!  :thumb:

Too bad PC is out of the options because white would have been sweet but its not that bad,
acrylic and aluminum bottom plus all the colors are already loads of options!

Did you mean by QC the quality control would make it more expensive then expected?
I wouldn't mind paying more for a white pc bottom but I can definitely understand if it gets too expensive and
doesn't meat enough interest to the additional poly carbonate bottoms.  :)

Thx Kin!  :thumb:

250$ still seems like a attractive and very reasonable price to me tho for a beauty like this, especially considering the limited quantity that might be made and all those options offered!
I think its a good middle way between keeping cost as low as possible for everyone but still offering all those sweet option! =)

I don't think removing the black pc bottom is a big issue for example as you can still go black aluminum if you want an alternative to the backlit transparent bottom!

Any ideas on how solid this thing will be relative to the Kmac? Because this is key for me. I literally want the keyboard standing after I smash it on a wall, full force, with both of my arms. (I'm actually not exaggerating.)

Very interested in this. A sub 200$ price would be very appealing. One very important thing is to make a case as thin and as flat as possible. From that, you can always add inclination and thickness with various options.

We don't really need pcb mounts, since we have beautiful mounting plate options! =D

It would be cool if we could select stainless or pc bottom plate, but making it case depended would be totally fine as well I guess! :)

But it's not so good.
So i don't decide to make pc plate yet.

This seems like an awesome keyboard. Honest question though, why do Korean customs seem to be so popular on here?

1) Usually carefully designed.
2) Rare, usually produced in a very small number (sometimes <100). And the GB usually conducted on korean forums only.
3) High quality, usually made with aluminum casing.
4) It's a custom, not what you can simply buy from store.  ;)
5) Price, small production, high cost.

Good news.
Tx87 pcb was made last week.

Bad news.
I have no time to test.

Worst news.
The factory increase the price.
PC bottom Alu top will be $250.
All Alu housing will be $270.
Anodizing and including PCB(presoldered diodes and resistors) and plate.

So if we get the PC bottom, that's the one that lets the light shine through?

I might have to get this... Is the winkeyless version going to be available? And if so, is there going to be a price difference?

And it doesn't come with LEDs on top?

I'm glad this is delayed, because I can then save up for it, having only just seen this haha.

I am making some samples.
But.. It is not easy.
I want to make purple and green colors with other method.
It makes price rise.
I want under $250 (alu top, alu plate, pc bottom, 2T stainless bottom plate and pcb).
I don't know it is possible..
I hope that I provide the lowest price.

These are just the PCBs. The PCBs are A87 compatible, so any board that takes A87 also fits the TX87.

Is the PCB already available? It looks like it's being used for the TGR Jane groupbuy, and you can order extras from a form in the op there.
This is what the form looks like:

This has nothing to do with the Orion v2. This was done by Kin25 who has recently disappeared with all the TX1800's

Disappeared? As in, took everyone's money and orders and fell off the face of the earth? That's not reassuring.

Kin is obviously trying to make the keyboards "slimmer" in Photoshop. :))

In reality, it's either the camera over-compensating the distortion of the lens, or the use of a telephoto, which gives it the "pincushion (https://photographylife.com/what-is-distortion)" effect. Looking at the pictures' EXIF, it's a generic smartphone pic so it's definitely over-compensation.

When I took a pic of my Realforce and the image came out like that, I was using my S5. Any way to change that? Or just get a new/better camera? (The S5 and old iPhones are my only cameras . :-[)

Don't use potatoes. :P

It's probably not worth your effort fixing a phone pic in Photoshop/LR/your fav photo editor to adjust the distortion.

Almost. The Jane has an aluminum top and uses the TX87 PCB, but the bottom is also aluminum, whereas this board uses an acrylic bottom to show off the RGB. Also, this board is about half the cost.

It was mentioned a few pages back that production costs were beyond initial expectations, I think they were around $250. After shipping and gb fees and such you'd probably have a hard time landing it for less than $300.

Also the more I look at the lip the uglier it looks :s I wonder what it looks like with RGB backlighting.

For $200 dollars it will be no brainer.

The factory increase the price.
PC bottom Alu top will be $250.
All Alu housing will be $270.
Anodizing and including PCB(presoldered diodes and resistors) and plate.

Factory raised the price to $250 and that's not including any shipping for paypal fees. I wouldn't get your hopes up for a price around $200, probably going to end up hovering around ~$300.

I've had my eye on this for a while, I personally love the case design. If the price is sub-350 I'd definitely want to make it my first korean custom.

I found this photo on KBDLAB. It seems that tx87 is in progress.

Is the PCB going to be Black in the final version? <3<3

Would love to get Black or White PCBs, cause Im not a fan of those red PCBs...  ;)

I'd hope more than 1. It'd be hard having geekhack share one TX87 board.  :-X

I know this is an IC,but I'm seeing people talking they have the PCBs and cases and whatnot. When did that happen?

Most likely ordered through other means or favoritism. This GB hasn't been fulfilled.

Well Leeku is the one who designed the PCB so he has free reign to do whatever he wants with his product.

Totally understandable, but if you are going to do that at least close out the IC so we don't look like dumbass with our hopes up.

Yeah, this was IC for a full board that Leeku was supplying the PCBs for. I don't think the really has control over it.
