Through-hole 5x12 ortholinear PCB for 60% tray mount case

Hello Geekhack,

The Lumberjack is back for a round 2. The open source, through hole, built it yourself, 60% ortholinear PCB kit is back.

* Ortholinear PCB for 60% cases
* Designed to be easy to build with minimal soldering experience.
* All through-hole components, no SMD soldering required.
* Get that visible component aesthetic in a standard 60% case.
* 5x12 (split Preonic) layout, full grid or 2x2u spacebars.
* Supports both USB Mini and USB-C (both connectors in kit).
* Supports MX, Choc v1, and Alps switches.
* The shape of the PCB will have cutouts to make it Bakeneko 60 compatible (no JST socket in kit).
* FR4 switch plate (black).
* €22EUR + shipping from EU

I feel silly for this now but is there a way to go back and verify/possibly change my submission? I filled the form kind of hurriedly while I was at work and would have checked the option for a blue PCB as well. Only checked the preferred color and didn't read enough about meeting MOQs and things, if purple is unpopular enough I'd still prefer blue as a possibility over black.

It's a Google form, so it should "just work". Maybe it was a glitch in the matrix. Here's a shortened link in case that was causing you issues: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeLbOGQkefjlx9p6e2UTpqpeGzJtKQpQsDzwd0T9rE-uiowkQ/viewform

Don't worry, purple is going to make it. I should have just expected all colours to make it and not bothered with the multiple choice.

is the Q key now south facing instead of north facing?

The footprint for the Q supports both north and south facing now so you can choose which way around you'd like it depending on your case and preference.

In for one of these. Never soldered a keyboard before, hopefully it's not too hard! This will be the project that finally gets me to harvest the switches from the dead Alps board I've got in the basement  :)

They will be bundled together. If you order 2 kits you'll only need to pay one set of postage, 3 or more kits and the postage will increase because of the increase in weight.

Would millmaxing interfere with assembly?

So I would just need to purchase and solder on a JST socket to try this in a Bakeneko 60?

Yes that's correct, although the cutouts on the PCB haven't been tested, they are as per the open source Bakeneko PCB outline and the Cannon Keys Bakeneko alternative support locations.

There is even a pad for a through hole JST connector if you can find one.

Thanks to everyone's support, the GB form is now closed.

We have over 200 kits ordered!

Expect Paypal invoices to pop-up in your inboxes over the next few days. If anything is incorrect in the invoice, let me know as soon as possible.

Once all invoices are paid, ordering of PCBs and components can commence.

Expect updates in this thread as things progress.

You should be able to email reply to the invoice from Paypal. I had some issues with Paypal double sending some invoices today and had to cancel a few duplicates, so you may have been caught up in that.

Quick update.

* Received word from JLCPCB today that manufacturing is complete and the PCBs have been shipped out today.
* The acrylic covers arrived from the laser cutter yesterday.
* Kits are starting to be put together, I've probably got 70 kits done, so as soon as the PCBs arrive and I get them QC'd I can start shipping the first orders.

March 19 Update
« Reply #31 on: Sat, 19 March 2022, 10:17:04 »
Not much to update:

* PCBs and plates should be arriving Friday this coming week
* The rest of the (hastily purchased before they vanished from stock) Atmega328p's arrived this week, programming has begun.

My Ciel arrived last week and I test fitted the PCB for the Bakeneko cutouts:

During this process I noticed that the Cannon Keys Bakeneko60 has differently positioned mount points than the open source (v3) Bakeneko that I based my cutouts on, so the PCB is not going to work in that case. If you have joined the buy specifically to use the Lumberjack in a Cannon Keys Bakeneko60 case, give me a shout and we'll see if we can work something out.

24 March Update
« Reply #32 on: Thu, 24 March 2022, 05:43:32 »
A quick update to let you know that the PCBs arrived yesterday, 2 days ahead of JLCPCB/DHL's shipping estimation. I have to unpack and QC everything, but initial eyes seem to show that everything is in order.

This means that all kit parts are now with me. I hope to start packing and shipping orders next week.

I will share a Google sheet here which will show the state of each order so you'll know when you should expect to receive yours.

27 March Update
« Reply #33 on: Sun, 27 March 2022, 07:36:48 »
Big update.

As mentioned, PCBs and plates have arrived from JLCPCB.

Everything is now unpacked. Everything looks good, a great job by JLCPCB compared to last round where we have some soldermask issues. I am QCing PCBs as I'm packing them, so there might still be some issues I haven't seen as yet, but first impressions are excellent.

So packaging and postage has started. To set expectations, I have 200 kits to pack and send and I can't do them all in one go, so they will dribble out over the next month or so. I am hoping to do 5 kits a day (30 a week) but we'll see, hopefully it'll go faster.

If you want to know when I'll get to your order or see how I'm doing, here's a sheet which will update as orders are packaged and sent. Just search for your invoice number: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ivnjUX_J6tSaAcm1j_Cgl3RJ8zpNYjUJ4vop6tDr6ro/edit?usp=sharing

There will hopefully be some extras, I won't know until all the GB orders are shipped. The main limiting factor is MCUs as they have basically become unavailable in the last month. I will post here when they are available or you can join the mailing list http://eepurl.com/hyPSt9

to be fully honest i know little to nothing about ortholinear layout and I will never go within 15 feet of a keyboard using one but I am starting to wonder why you see so many tray mounted ortho boards despite there being so many different options, is it just the PCB design and just how its more difficult to implement gaskets or is it just people preferring tray/burger mount?

Damn, I wish this PCB was limited in-stock ;-;

Far as I can tell, it’s just because tray mount is the ‘standard’ 60% with Poker screw holes. Since ortho is a niche and some people just want to try it out, being able to pop the PCB in a Tofu or similar starter case without committing is a nice option. With the (relative) availability of the Bakeneko we should see some variety, but getting a tray-mount case is still the best way to try out different PCBs while being able to get an easy replacement if anything happens.

Also, I believe that in the ortho community everyone goes very strongly for his own preferences (30%, 40%, 50%, split, dactyls, monoblock, vertical staggered, even it is the strongest community in building and design from scratch). That's why you see so few group buys for high end ortho keyboards, for example gaskets, as very few people are willing to go outside their preferences.

There will be some extras, not sure how many at this time. Once all of the GB orders have been fulfilled and any issues solved, I will see how many extra kits are left over. It could be a couple of months, if not more.

That sucks, those USB-Cs are not easy, even when you've done them in the past they can still surprise and bite you. I'm pretty sure I'll have some spare PCBs without component kits, I'm sure I can help you out when we're sorting out extras.

I don't know if you're aware but a while back i added the atmega328 to qmk, which is binary compatible with the atmega328p. i think i wasn't able to get make flash to work due to it being beyond my skill level but it does compile like the 328p and load over isp. it might be an easier part to source.

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay but the form is finally up for Lumberjack kit extras https://forms.gle/Ya3Szu45s5HwsAqM9

If you've been hanging out for extra kits, sorry for the delay but I finally had time to get things organised.

Its first come first served but hopefully there'll be enough kits for everyone who wants one.

If you just need/want a PCB or other parts cos something went wrong with your build, fill out the form and let me know.

Happy Friday.
