hhkb pro 1 vs 2?
« on: Sun, 20 April 2008, 03:47:20 »
I just realized that the american PFU store sells hhkb pro 1, whereas benippon and other import stores sell pro 2. Anyone know the difference between the two? I'm a bit worried because, apparently, the second version of good keyboards are not as good as the first one.

They are identical in every way except for the fact that v.2 has a built-in USB hub.  (which is what prompted me to replace my v.1 with a v.2)

The HHKB Pro keyboards use electrical capacitive keyswitches.

v. 2 is "A product of Japan," according to the PFU store guy when I contacted them last year about an extra set of keys. They hate us, but they make tens of thousands of dollars off us on this keyboard alone. Don't they get it?

Yea, I asked the PFU America store about the version 1.  He said they were made in Japan also.

yea, it's a little absurd that they make English layout keyboards and yet they don't bother making it available outside of japanese (at least for the pro 2). And it's not like the Fujitsu is some tiny company that doesn't have marketing resources outside of Japan.

Maybe PFU America has too much stock of the original boards and don't want to import the others till they run out of the model 1.

It's been years since the v.2 was released, I kind of doubt that is the case.

Im considering buying one of the HHK family when i buy my laptop, because i dont like laptop keys and this one is very small. I assume the english layout is the US one?because in europe there's one extra key which its probably not in this english layout right?this key is usually associated with the <> characters. Also the pro 2 is the best version right? i've read the lite is a bit bad.....if so i live in Portugal so which shop has the best deals for Europe?

Yeah, I've never seen mention of a UK/European layout one. All the pictures I've seen have the oversized US left shift without the extra key.

I had a look a while ago and the cheapest I could find the pro 2 delivered to the UK was £150 before customs which is pretty expensive, the Cherry G84-4100 with mechanical low profile switches is £50 and the Shortboard with full sized membrane keys is £35.

There only are HHKB Pros and Pro 2 in US layout. The Lite 2s are available in Japanese layout.

Look at your keyboard (US layout): The arrow keys are Fn + [ or ; or ' or /

It's so natural I don't have to look anymore, and that's not even the cool part.

Fn + a, s, d and f are Mac functions and Fn + Esc brings up the shutdown menu in Mac. The only other Fn combo I use regularly is Fn + ` (which on the HHKB is the topmost key on the RIGHT side) which is forward delete.

Yea, I don't have to look for the arrows either.  I got used to the arrows on my HHKpro2 pretty fast!  It's weird, even with no lettering - I also got used to the page up, page down, keys too.

That's my MacBook with my charcoal HHKB Pro 2 with black printed keys set for HHKB lite / Mac mode. The retractable cable is designed for the Sony PSP and I got it off eBay for $3. I really don't know what other information you want, so ask away if I didn't give you what you're looking for.

I have a question.  Have you ever been on that setup in public and if so, has anyone said anything?  ... like, noticed it's an HHK and complimented you on it?

I take that set up everywhere because I don't like the MacBook keyboard too much and no one has ever said anything or looked funny at me. We're a rare breed here boys (and girl).

Do you actually type with the keyboard set up like in the picture or does doing that interfere with the MB keyboard?

Yes I type like that. The HHKB fits perfectly over the MB keyboard and it stays there so no extra letters get typed or anything. Plus, iMav will like this, the entire trackpad is available.

Mind you, this is not the way I do it all the time - just when I am out, at school, or in an easy chair at home.

Yes.  I ordered by HHKB case from them and had zero issues.  Would definitely deal with them again.
