Worth it? Infinity x GMK 3Run 60% Massdrop
« on: Thu, 20 October 2016, 19:45:25 »
I cannot solder myself (thus far), so I have to rely on others. So I'm considering this:

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/infinity-keyboard-kit

(Sorry, couldn't find non-login link anywhere. ?guest_mode=1 didn't work for me)

Let them solder it for me. I envision this as the pok3r that never came: a true MX Clears HHKB with 100% customizable open firmware.

1) Anybody experience with Massdrop letting do the soldering?

2) Would the metal case (55 dollar) be worth the additional fee?

3) Can I fit a regular PBT MX keyset, considering the standard hhkb-like layout? I'm worrying I get mixed up with the right shift / fn split. I guess I can take the fn from numpad on a 104 set (1x) but what about the small shift?

4) Was looking into this keyset to go with it:

I've heard that it's fine, but it can take a while. I think the soldering is outsourced.

Yes. That's a REALLY good price for a metal case.

Most thick PBT sets now have the 1.75x/1x shift/fn combo. If you're struggling to find one, most recent GMK sets also come with them.

I /think/ that set has a 1.75x rshift. Hard to tell from pics, and it's not listed. Looks like there might be one, though.

Any idea HOW LONG it would take realistically? I'm trying to search for it but out of luck so far. Perhaps I'm searching in the wrong places.

No way to know with Massdrop. I ordered my Infinity on May 22 last year and received it November 4. I'd hope this run doesn't take that long, but you just never know. I ordered mine assembled and haven't had any problems with it. I really like my infinity and it's become my full time work board. The hacker layout may be a challenge for keys, but the standard layout isn't bad at all. The short shift and row 2 backspace definitely seem to be becoming more popular and most recent sets have featured them.

That's because that's not how you format it - use ?mode=guest_open, i.e.

Thanks! I must've gotten it wrong somewhere.
