Legendary legends :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Not technically a keyboard, but the beginning phase of a Topre switch tester/key display I'm going to make from a board that's been broken down for parts:
Show Image

Pretty rough right now (I'm not very good at keeping my hands steady because I have bootleg parkinsons), but I'll cut down the left edge to make it symmetrical width with the right, and do the same with the bottom side to pair with the top, then mount it all on acrylic or something. The layout of the tester will be:
Row 1 - Stock Topre Sliders
Row 2 - Purple/Silenced Topre Sliders
Row 3 - Novatouch Sliders
Row 4 - No idea, maybe cut it off
Column 1 - 30g
Column 2 - 45g
Column 3 - 55g

Then maybe get a case made to put it all in to give the keys some thock/hide the cuts.
edit- and with caps (temporary cardboard base results in varying height)
Show Image

Are you considering making a tour with it or something?

Cut it down to 3x3 so I could store it in the Taobao case while still fulfilling my goal of having the three weights and three slider types:
Show Image

Will smooth out the sides and look for some acrylic for the base tomorrow if I find the time. The idea just kind of popped in my head tonight so I'm winging it as I go.

Cool idea man! You could make versions with lube and versions with dental bands / foam discs / type s orings.

Types like a dream! Smoother than butter and very quiet. I was actually surprised at how quiet it is. The extra thick lube isn't sticky at all, it made the keys smoother and actually helped quiet it down even more. Lubing removes a lot of the "sweeping" noise from the plunger traveling in the housing.

Hmmmmmm~ Interesting because I feel like HHKB is always stiffer than Realforce because of the higher profile (?) and different construction (?) ~ The 45g and 55g both felt stiffer in the HHKB than when in the Realforce, IMO. Maybe they're somewhere in between 45g/55g, if it doesn't feel significantly different than your HHKB because 55g feels pretty different to 45g Topre. TOO INTERESTINGGG!!!

The Extra thick blend I used was designed by mkawa specifically for 55g Topre, though I suspect it would work great on all Topre domes. I have an 87UW 45g uniform coming that I plan to lube with the extra thick mix so we will see first hand if thats true.

I've never messed with any of the EK lubes so I can't comment on how well they work on Topre plungers, though some quick glancing around shows other users have tried it and seemed happy with the results.

Realforce 87UB 55g with Topre OEM silencing and lubed with extra thick Krytox

Good situation

Mmmmm~ You're set! Nothing else needs to be done to that keyboard except caps~~<3 Kind of makes me want to try silent plungers...

I could not be happier with how this one turned out. This setup feels every bit as awesome as I had hoped, it's so nice to have the silencing without sacrificing any of the tactility. I kind of wish the stabilized keys could be silenced too but its honestly not that bad.

You should definitely check out the OEM silenced sliders if you haven't. With those sliders and the lube this thing is as close to silent as I think you could ever get any keyboard, it's so quiet it's almost kind of strange to type on. It makes even chiclet keyboards sound loud   :))

extra thick Krytox !!
How it feels like ?  Don't you feel sticky on your realforce?

Types like a dream! Smoother than butter and very quiet. I was actually surprised at how quiet it is. The extra thick lube isn't sticky at all, it made the keys smoother and actually helped quiet it down even more. Lubing removes a lot of the "sweeping" noise from the plunger traveling in the housing.
Now I want to try what it feels on my Novatouch haha.

Why extra thick though? Isn't the purpose of the extra thick to prevent movement from happening whereas the more liquid lube is to ensure it travels smoothly? Do you think the thick blue grease from EK would do the job?

The Extra thick blend I used was designed by mkawa specifically for 55g Topre, though I suspect it would work great on all Topre domes. I have an 87UW 45g uniform coming that I plan to lube with the extra thick mix so we will see first hand if thats true.

I've never messed with any of the EK lubes so I can't comment on how well they work on Topre plungers, though some quick glancing around shows other users have tried it and seemed happy with the results.

OK cool thanks. I'll be looking forward to read your impression with the silenced 45g.

I guess one cannot find the silence plunger in the market, you have to buy it from someone.

Incoming potato pics the colors are horrible (sorry) this is my new RF 87ub 55g with the orange modifiers from Elite keyboards. It's looking pretty bare and meh but if I can ever find reasonably priced Topre replacement sets and when/if I can ever get in a sale for some Topre artisans ill post some pics with it all dressed up. I really like the orange I have on it now and I think it would amazing with an orange stripe, these mods and a nice orange artisan on the escape (tangerine stump or 1 of the orange color way vandals would be perfect) anyways she's nothing special but she's mine and I am loving the feel of the 55g keys. My next venture will be an HHKB or a Korean custom. Although I'm leaning towards HHKB because I really like how the 45g keys on the nova touch I returned felt and from what I have read here they are even better on the HHKB. Thanks again guys for the help and next time I post some pics they should look alot better (I got a very good deal on a Nikon 3100)

That is a huge f**cking spacebar.

I still can't get the logic behind one so large, but anyways, very cool board.  :thumb:

It's only 9x :p
Still oversized  :-\

Hey, some people can only handle 5, others enjoy a full 9.  It takes all kinds.
Lol

Quick question guys in your experience how long does it take to lube a RF 87 and is there anything different you really have to take into account compared to lubing an MX board. Reason why i ask is the comment about using the heavy krytox on the RF87 intrigued me as I was actually really surprised how quiet the 55g keys already were so I can imagine lubed and silenced it would be a little strange and I have been looking for a reason to tear into my new board.

That looks sweet with the orange!

Good luck finding a full set to get the stripe :)
