Yea very nice, not sure why we have 87U's...86U is perfect.

When is the last time you used the right-click mouse button keyboard key? :))
What's the difference between the 86U and 87U?
86u = 86 keys
87u = 87 keys

Is the only difference, the bigger spacebar? I like it.

86u has 1.5x ctrl 1x super 1.5x alt 7x space 1.5x alt 1x super 1.5x ctrl, 87u has 1.5x ctrl 1x super 1.5x alt 6x space 1.5x alt 1x super 1x menu 1.5x ctrl
Ah I see.

I know I'm probably the outlier here but I use the Menu key literally all the time. Menu key + r is engrained in my brain for opening up the file properties window.

Is that the same as alt+enter? I remember when the Menu and Windows keys showed up on keyboards, and thinking they were dumb at the time, so a lot of the older shortcuts are ingrained for me... but some of the 'new' ones are nicer/easier.

I've used the menu key occasionally, but I don't miss not having it on my current setup. If I wanted another TKL setup, the 86U certainly is attractive.

Could always disassemble and dye :)

Trick is to find a black dye that doesn't look blue/purple. The crowd here, as well as the 3d printing crowd seem to like idye poly the best right now. Last time I dyed something with Rit black, it had the purplish hue to it. Going to try idye poly black on some of the 3d printed stuff in the near future. Not going to dye my HHKB though as I like the charcoal color.

starting with such a dark case already, dying further black might work out without getting too blue.

It also could ruin your HHKB, the case is ABS plastic that is not as dye friendly as PBT is.

It could be ruined if you are not very careful, as warping is much more likely with ABS when dying.

I would avoid dying ABS.

Plus dye reacts differently to ABS that it does PBT and could have affects that you didn't want or expect.

Even more risky with a case that you can't replace.

 gotcha, that's what I was getting at, whether it would warp the case or just look bad due to the dye not
'taking'.

Which is why you always do a test dying.

I've dyed plenty of plastics with a lower melting temperature than ABS. As has anybody who has done any 3d printing. Its not rocket science guys :P

Just have to find the right combo.

For the record, ABS is indeed on of the more difficult plastics to dye, but it is dye-able.

Have you seen any posts about failed ABS keycap dyeing? ABS cant take heat like PBT and can be melted or warped- deformed in the dyeing process. Just like you don't see ABS dye-sub keycaps.

@ keshley when you dye up a HHKB make sure you post some pics.

It is of course, I just feel one is taking a big risk dying a case that a replacement can't be got.  :)

Mhh, I'm fine with this dark gray thing. It seems my photo makes it to look darker what it should be and I haven't dyed it or anything. Guess there's a way to dye it somehow but you'll have to be careful because you're dealing with ABS.

My peeve with the dark grey model is that the blue tint makes it look like a old case bleached from UV exposure. But that's just me; I'm picky like that. Otherwise, yeah — more often than not, in photos, the contrast makes the case look darker than it really is.

I have a random question for y'all, and I dunno if there is any other better place to post it than here.

Does anyone know if the blank/printed HHKB keysets share the same profile as the Realforce keysets? I need a black keyset for the alphas on my RF, and was wondering if these keysets were compatible with the Realforce.

Excellent use of the red set across two keyboards!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Love it, Xowie did something similar. I actually want to remove the silver on my trophy silver because it looks like it'd be a cool color.

That's why I have one of the white PBT spacebars coming too. Going to do a whole keyset and didn't want the hassle of matching the ABS to the PBT.

I've convinced the GF that she needs a topre board... and wow the full size 55g boards are hard to find. So we're talking about getting a 87UB and a 23UB.

I showed her some of the boards in this thread, think that has helped tipped the decision  :D
