IRON165 by Smith + Rune

After almost a year in research and development, we are excited to present the IRON165 by Smith + Rune. Rather than drawing inspiration from things outside our community, we focused on the incredible designs the community itself has created over the years. The IRON165 aims to be a distillation of these positive innovations, included in one premium board.

Optimized Plate, the Process, and FEA analysis

More

Keyboard plate FEA analysis was wanted to measure deflection and try to achieve a uniform plate deflection distribution across the keyboard.  This concept has been done before with the Omega60 talking about mounting points.  One of the first criticisms was that without a PCB and switch the study was worthless.  I started out by modeling a small sample before moving to a full size plate.  I constructed a small plate made of brass, switch made of POM, and PCB made of resin injected plastic.

I wanted to see the difference in displacement just a plate and a fully modeled with PCB, switches and Plate.  With modeling of the entire system, there are two options in consideration:

Fully bonded - Solidworks treats the model as though it was fully welded together at every contact point.
No Penetration - Materials wont move through each other but can move independently from other models.

I estimated typing force to be around 2N max on each key as I measured my repeated tapping on a scale at 200g as the hardest I would ever really type (and I like to bottom out).

Next is the fully bonded model with plate and switches.  Again a 2N force is applied to the top of the switch model with fixtures mounted at the four screw holes.

Lastly is the most realistic model the no penetration.  Same force and Fixture as above.  Notice how the displacement doesnt flow as uniformily through the switches vs the fully bonded model above.  You'll also see the displacement pattern is more similiar to that of just the plate.

If you compare the displacement results we conclude that just a plate can be used to model displacement without the extra PCB and switch modeling effort.  The displacement of the plate model is approx 35% more than the plate with stiffness of PCB and Switches added to it.

Since each switch has to be setup and run individually I concentrated on making just the alphas as consistent as possible.  This is still a work in progress, but here are the initial results.

This was the stock designed plate mounted with gaskets.  Numbers in each switch represent the maximum deflection in millimeters for a 2N force:

Adding in relief cuts we can try to make the lower deflecting keys increase to the same deflection of the higher deflecting keys.  This resulted in a decrease in standard deviation of 25% and a decrease in range by 35%.

FAQ

New studio? New board? Why should we trust you?

While this is a first in the keyboard community for us, we are proud of the team we’ve put together. Combined, we bring ten years mechanical engineering experience and five years of supply-chain management for small-batch, boutique products in other industries.

Smith + Rune is grounded in basic engineering principles, with a touch of magic and mysticism created by this wonderful community.

The rune logo is cool! Does it mean anything?

The two Norse runes featured in our logo, Sowilo and Raido, come from the Elder Futhark alphabet, the oldest form of runic alphabets. Sowilo means strength, power, success, while Raido roughly translates to ride, or journey. Together they form a bindrune, drawing the power of both into one creating a charm to ensure a successful endeavor and bringing a bit of luck to your desktop.

Why is it named IRON165? Where’s all the iron?

The iron industry essentially shaped the industrial revolution of the 1800’s. Its ubiquity has led to its inclusion in nearly every industry. Iron is used to create many of the tools or machine parts we use today.

A keyboard is essentially a modern, but basic tool we use daily and we kept this central in our design choices. While beautiful, we placed function over form when designing the IRON165. In its simplest form, it had to be the best at being a tool first. Something durable, sturdy and a pleasure to use.

While not constructed entirely from iron (although steel is made with iron), we felt this board embodied the more abstract sense of the word. Iron is strong, iron is reliable, iron is long-lasting.

Whoa! Where’s the ISO support?

We will support ISO if enough interest is shown, but all of our plate files will be made open-source (including ISO) regardless. So even if you’re an avid ISO user and we don’t have an ISO plate, you’ll be able to get one made. We will also be optimizing our ISO plate for consistency, just like our other plates.

The PCB will support ISO out-of-the-box.

What parts will be user-replaceable?

Our hope is that everything, except the case itself will be user-replaceable in some form or fashion. One of our main goals when designing this board was to make absolutely sure that no IRON165 will ever become a glorified paperweight.

The renders are amazing! Wow! Who did those?

All of our renders came from the amazing Abec13! We can’t thank him enough!

Interest Check Disclaimer

Keep in mind this is an interest check. Nothing, including options, pricing, etc, is final until the GB starts. This IC represents the most correct, up-to-date information we have regarding the Iron165 at this time. Based on prototyping and manufacturing samples, some things may change.

We will be announcing any changes, if any, here first, and on Discord as well.

Shoutouts

My most sincerest thanks go out to the other half of Smith + Rune, lBaron. Without you, this board would’ve never made it this far.

We want to thank those that have supported us from the very beginning of this project, including Langelandia, bhk1004, Spade, Eskimojo, Full / Aslejoh, Minterly, Oldcat, Capsy, and the rest of the Gray Studio and TYL discords. I likely missed some names, but you know who you are.

We also want to thank the community as a whole including the designers, vendors, and of course, the streamers and content creators. You are part of what makes a project like this so fun and rewarding. Watching this community grow has been incredible!

The materials look very nice.  I also like the rune detail.  How far recessed are the bottoms of the keycaps when mounted? There are no renders of a side view so it’s hard to tell.  From the first image, they look almost even with the top edge.  I think most of us prefer the caps to sit slightly lower

There are no renders of a side view so it’s hard to tell.  From the first image, they look almost even with the top edge.  I think most of us prefer the caps to sit slightly lower

Top bezel is 7mm + gasket above the switch plate

Okay, I’m not versed enough in the specifics to judge.  It looks like, from this diagram (which appears accurate since I’ve found the same in other diagrams), that the switch sticks up 6.6mm above the plate and the. Another 3.6mm to the top of the stem.

What I cannot seem to find is the height of a GMK keycap (depth of stem inserts and skirt height), to finish the equation.  Is there a standard that designers use?

Majority of boards are 7mm (including 268.1 for comparison).. Not enough imo, 7.5 is better. 7.8+ drowns the caps too much. Something like M65-A would be 6mm.

Yeah it seemed that 7mm was standard when designing. Then it’ll be a little bit above cause of gasket compression but no more than .25mm or so.

Thanks for the feedback, all.  I own the 268.1 and it is indeed almost exactly flush from case top edge to bottom of GMK caps.  Don’t suppose we convince you to adjust the design closer to 7.5mm? Especially since the inner edge has a fillet

It wouldn’t be hard from a design perspective but a huge design goal was to have as low as possible front bezel.

Yeah it seemed that 7mm was standard when designing. Then it’ll be a little bit above cause of gasket compression but no more than .25mm or so.

I learnt with a gasket board that even .1mm off can change it visually a lot. Double the gap sorta thing. Worth considering maybe, sure you have though.

It wouldn’t be hard from a design perspective but a huge design goal was to have as low as possible front bezel.

The switches still sit at the same level when changing bezel height though.

I've always argued it's the height the switches sit at, not strictly the front height (due to changing bezel heights).
