[IC] MK-06
« on: Sat, 23 May 2020, 16:09:14 »
Introductions:
Hello everyone, this is the first time I ever post on Geekhack, before getting to the keyboard, I would like to introduced myself a little:
I'm Zlane and I've been apart of the mechanical keyboard community since early 2019 when i bought my first mechanical keyboard, the gk61 and ever since then I've been really into custom mechanical keyboards, after sometime being in the hobby, I saw that there haven't been alot of special or unique keyboard designs being put out that I like, most are just rectangle on a slope or a brick, I think theres nothing wrong in simplicity, I still love simple boards like the tofu, the60, rama, salamander,... but after a while I got bored of those repetitive designs, after being inspired by boards such as the Lynn dolphin, the cod67, matrix noah, I have decided to learn about designing keyboards, to bring something new to the table, to make a board that can differentiate itself from the other boards. After a few months of learning, I have finally made a keyboard that I really liked, so that brought us today to my new keyboard design, the MK-06
243296-0

243298-1

243304-2

243300-3

243302-4

Inspirations:
This keyboard was inspired by Sci-fi spaceships and mecha designs in movies and anime and video games, with small details carved in to the weights to add depth to the design of the board
Keyboard Specs:
Mounting: Top mount
Angle: 8 degrees
One large weight with 3 accent weights on 2 side and on the back
Optional top corner blocker
Future plans:
Currently I have no plan of making a prototype or opening a gb of this keyboard anytime soon since I'm still in school and I will have to focus on my studies for the upcoming finals exams, if everything goes well, I might make a prototype of it and open a gb for this next year

Looks really promising. Would love to see something like this in a gasket mount. If you do pursue it, obviously colour schemes based on famous mecha like Unit 01 and classic Gundam would look great.

Definitely very cool looking. Might be prohibitively expensive with all the cuts but it looks pretty awesome.

Sick board, but the badge kind of ruins it.

I like it, but maybe instead of Mech-06 branding you could just use 06 or something similar like some sort of code name for the keeb.

This is a really cool concept, I do agree that all of the cuts will be pricey, but I applaud the effort. Good luck with school, and keep at this project, I hope to see it come to fruition.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm not really sure about gasket mounts yet, currently I'm just trying to make sure the board works but I might look into gasket mount later

Is the badge supposed to be optional so it can be replaced with a switch?
If yes then I am a big fan of it.

Mostly a lurker but had to post on this. Looks really great. Def get the mecha theme and it's very unique compared to other boards.

My main concern for this would be cost. I'm by no means a keyboard designer, manufacturer , or whatever so take my word with a grain of salt. But with so may chamfered edges and recessed areas this looks like it would be difficult and expensive to make. Additionally, the brass accents, while very very nice and I love them, would add to the cost. And more pieces means more potential logistical manufacturing problems. I see this easily being at least a $600+ board on the low end. Might want to consider either smoothing out the recessed areas (like the grills on the back and sides) or possibly integrating them in the case itself already. Just my two cents.

Also a question: Why name it Mech-06? Just curious as to the numbering. Also I read "MK-06" as "Mark-06" as in the 6th iteration.

Love the design. Good luck with the ic!

Make sure it has a fast PCB so that I can use it as a gaming board and I am in.  The design looks great.  Also please add ISO, obviously.

there is no such thing as a "fast pcb for gaming". that stuff is marketing bs that companies like razer and corsair make up.
if it's going to use a basic qmk powered atmega based pcb it will be fine.

If I could make a suggestion, consider making the USB port flush - closer to the back so it is easier to connect the USB cable. The current cutout is quite recessed which can cause scratches when connecting the cable from the back without looking.
