Off Topic / Re: This year may be biblical

Man, I sweat bullets in the dead of Winter without a jacket. Wake up - Immediately begin sweating profusely. Get to work dripping. Middle of the day - nothing. End of the night - here comes the sweat again. So I mostly sweat during periods of inactivity, regardless of temperature.

Any other hyperhidrosis brothers or sisters out there? Summer sucks though, I may as well have just jumped into a pool at any given moment. I miss AC office jobs where you sit all day for that reason.

Keyboards / Dai ichi Yellow - Very strange indeed...
« Last post by Rhienfo on Fri, 03 May 2024, 23:56:09 »
This is probably the strangest switch I have. It's a mx clone called dai ichi yellow, it's this very strange mx clone made by this random manufacturer that there is like no info on at all or I just missed it for some reason.

The weird thing about it is that it has a click leaf, unlike other mx clones, which confuses me a lot. I don't think I've seen a switch do this apart from those zeal clickiez which apparently have a click jacket. It actually feels alright, like if you gave me this I would probably type on and be fine and like it. It's a lot more tactile when not in a keyboard though. I looked around and someone said that there was binding with the switches, I only have one cause it was sent alongside another switch that will be in a small build.

the top is the dai ichi yellow, bottom a cherry clicky switch (sorry for poor image quality but I just got this today and I am very confused about it)

It's loud af and like rattles if you shake like there is something lose in it, but it's just the click leaf moving around hitting the switch housing making that metallic sound.

Just a very strange switch in general, but honestly more mx switches should do click leafs like this, could actually be pretty nice. (that aren't a dollar a switch please)

Is there any information on the bottom piece weight differences?

New Members / Hello there, it's ArpYorashol!

Hi! This is ArpYorashol, from Singapore!

This started off with me realising my Razer keyboard was getting grossly disgusting. So sometime in March, I came across a stall selling Keebs and I decided to head in to press a few keys and thought to myself "hmmm...that feels good and sounds great? Price tag not so good" (it was a $184 for a fully built GMK87). Went home that evening and chanced upon a budget KB video and decided to order it on a whim (really needed to change that razer out...).

The journey has been great and I have 3 KBs now (I ordered one of it by mistake because I thought I was only ordering keycaps. It was Taobao.). Might get one more Alu case 60/65 in the near future. I have so much more to learn about this dynamic hobby so if you have any recommended readings to reply to this thread!

In the meantime, have a great one!

This thread has very similar parallels with the automotive community in regards to Resto-mods vs restorations. What has more value, a USB enabled, usable keyboard made from the bones of a vintage machine or keeping it stock and using a convertor or translator to communicate via USB?

I have been harvesting Alps switches for use in AEK keyboards, but with new guts to use with modern systems. AEKs are very common and are not seen as sought after in the way some other keyboards are. Makes me wonder what people think of switch harvesting (engine swapping) from vintage keyboards.

So I think cutting the plastic rivets, as mentioned, is a pretty common mod, and is basically necessary to do anything at all inside the board.  I don't think many people will begrudge someone their bolt mod.  I tend to feel that if there is a good supply of something, to the point where it doesn't seem to be holding much value, then there's no sense in wringing one's hands about the potential future state.  It's only when they start getting rare enough that people who want them for what they are have trouble finding them that I feel you should at least consider how much you value your project.  Ultimately, though, they're things, and if one instance of an object is bringing you joy, then enjoy.  In particular with Alps and Buckling spring, there's only the one company making them at all anymore, and supply could end up scarce.

One thing I did NOT realize is that Unicomp keeps 122's in stock.  Think I finally found the pre-built to put on my Christmas list.

I am much more concerned with having something on my desk that works exactly the way that I want it to work than forcing myself to adapt myself to a piece of gear.

That said, future collectors of vintage gear (if there really are that many of them) will object to our pillaging of parts.

But, Alps are unique (proprietary?) enough that I have mostly just shuffled them around. So, aside from my Model Fs, my preferred keyboard is a Northgate Omnikey 101 with orange Alps transplanted into it.
