I am building an ErgoDox, and today I get the last part, so I can begin to build it. But I don't have a plate, as I am waiting for my friend finish his 3D printer, so he can print me a case.
I wondered if I could build the keyboard, solder the switches in place, and then just put the plate on later. Or do I have to put on the plate, and then solder the switches in?

Nope, not possible unfortunately.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.
