In 2009, I tried to secede from the United States and called our country the People's Republic of Deer Lake Mesa (prdlm).  We were unsuccessful.

I'm considering switching to something else, because prdlm2009 doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Something related to Calvin and Hobbes.  Spiffman or something like that. Hopefull I won't violate any copyright laws.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

A favorite psychedelic rock song from the early 1970s: "Fohat Digs Holes in Space" from the album "Camembert Electrique" by Gong.

A bizarre and anachronistic choice, but I was going for something truly off the wall. I don't think that anyone has ever guessed it, but it was obscure even in its own time.

PS - I recognized the backwards anonymous Moose construction after staring at it for a few seconds.

When I was much much younger my friend and I watched this show called Disney 4111 all the time, and for some reason we joked about "Frenchie4111". When it came time for him to choose a Runescape username he made it "Frenchie4111" as a joke. I eventually paid him 10 bucks and a pocket knife for the Runescape account, and I have been naming all my accounts Frenchie4111 ever since.

At the time I was really into Iron Maiden so for my first computer forum I signed up as The_Number_Of_The_Beast. However things changed and names were shorted if you were over xx characters so I shortened to The_Beast and thank god, that **** was annoying to type.

I use to listen to a lot of Iron Maiden back in the high school days too. But now, I've moved on to more symphonic metal genre.

I've moved on as well. I don't listen to metal nearly as much. I found Leppelin and mellowed out to RHCP, Weezer, Audioslave and then onto folk music. Now I listen to a lot folk on NPR/WPR and sometimes I'll listen to classical as well to calm down after a long day

It's funny that tjcaustin is actually pronounced "TJC-Austin" -- I'm sure everyone thought of it like "TJ-Caustin" or was it just me?...
Nope.

Now here this whole time I thought it was an rather extreme euphemism or double entendre. lulz
Never would have guess it was basically literal. Oddly the literal explanation is also disturbing.

Way, way back, when I was maybe 14, I couldn't type.  These were the days that I only used the family computer and passwords weren't necessary because I didn't have internet access.  When we got dial-up internet I began using 'qaz' for every password because it is easy to find on a keyboard.  I really could not type at all.  I also used it as a Quake handle:  -QaZ-

Around this time I was also really into Metallica.  (Black album!!)  When it came time to set up an email account, I just smooshed 'em together.  I've used it for all sorts of throw-away internet names ever since.  I've started to move away from it in recent years.  I prefer to just go by my name now.  In games I go by 'bachelor'

Pronounced Metalli-Kaz

I went to sign up for AIM back in 2000(?), and all of my first choices for IM handles were taken.  The bot prompted me to enter a couple of terms, I entered Tarzan and Telecommunications.  Telecomtrzn was the result. Still have that handle, no longer use AIM.

I basically ring the changes on the IM handle for new user IDs, so Greystoke was a logical offshoot.

Back before the Internet was around, I played soccer and there were two Michaels on the team. Needless to say, it got confusing when someone would shout "Michael", so the other Michael suggested we smash our first letter and last names together. His name with Michael Williams, so he became "Milliams" and my name is Michael Ashby, so I become "mashby". I have no idea why we just didn't use our last names.

Anyway, I thought this was super cool and used it for other things as well. Of course, once the Internet came around, I realized that it really wasn't all that clever and is now quite common in fact. Regardless, I still use "mashby" for just about everything online -- including WoW.

whiskerBox always wins these username threads.

In my mind the High Klaxon's name will always be pronounced "T.J. Caustin".

The short version of my username's story is that it's from the book of Isaiah.  Wikipedia has the details.  The entire phrase is maher-shalal-hash-baz which means something like "swift to the plunder".

The more involved version is that a roommate of mine in college used to joke that he would have four sons someday and name them Maher, Shalal, Hash, and Baz.  This stuck in my mind for some reason.  When it came time to make an account for Starcraft 2, I thought "hashbaz" had both a nice zergy sound to it and an appropriate meaning for the swarm.  I didn't end up liking it very much though and was considering changing it until I started posting a lot here under the same name.  After that it stuck.

Acronym for my real-life name. I used it for my second e-mail address—all other acronyms were either already taken, sounded stupid, or included diacritic. It has stuck with me since then, although I have a 1337 nickname (used almost exclusively in games) based on one song by Iron Savior.

I have been grizzlyclambert ever since I got online in 1999. I've had a few other nicks (Antediluvian when I was really into Vampire: the Masquerade), but I've stuck with grizzly for a long time. It was my first gmail address back during the beta days.

Grizzly: I've always been a hairy person, and every girlfriend I've ever had inevitably called me a "teddy bear". And there was a guy in my middle school whose name was Charlie Lambert. I always thought that the way he signed his assignments was hilarious "C. Lambert" and took that variation of his name for my own.

When I was in highschool I saw a graffiti that said "strk" and I thought it was was cool arrangement of letters and it became one of my online tags that stuck.

Overtime I didn't like that the name didn't have any vowels and people would call me sterk, stark, strik etc and it wasn't consistent. So I decided to add some vowels to make it a somewhat unique name.

S -> Ace
trk -> trak

i was always "iridium" everywhere, but everyone i know ended up calling me "iri".
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. it was supposed to a vaguely computer savvy joke, something something online anonymity (too many of my old usernames had my first name, Lucas, in them and it made me uncomfortable), also maybe a porn joke.

One of my good friends had the same first name as me.  I don't remember all the details, but he decided that he would be The KundeNator and I would be The HoffmanMyster (based on our last names).  This was ~10 years ago.  I have used it for everything since then and have no problems registering this username so it stuck.

Also, apparently I'm the only one who knew it was TJC Austin.  But, I did think it was referring to Austin the city, so there's that.   :-[

When I first made an account on Runescape I was trying to think of a username and a bottle of that was sitting next to me. Somehow bodged it from that

I might not have guessed that one right away.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

I should've given a little more background to Macsmasher. In 1996, I bought the game Quake. (The first night playing it, I called my best buddy and told him he had to drop everything and come over to see this. We've both been gamers ever since.)

I needed a player name when we started having LAN parties. At the time, the Mac fanboys looked down their noses at the Win guys. (Like the Prius drivers that enjoy the smell of their own farts in that South Park episode.) Photoshop was their flagship app. If I remember correctly, PC Magazine had an article comparing the fastest Mac against a dual CPU NT4 system with Photoshop benchmarks and the Win machine smashed the Mac six ways from Sunday in every benchmark. I thought it was so funny, I came up with the name Macsmasher and have been using it ever since.
