[IC] DCS 9009 (GB complete)
« on: Sun, 28 March 2021, 05:50:54 »
DCS 9009

GB complete

Cannonkeys target prices are as follows:

Base, 200MOQ, $120
Alps, 75MOQ, $115
Extensions, 100MOQ, $35
Row 5, 50MOQ, $22
Relegendable, 50MOQ, $25

Regional vendors will provide pricing closer to the GB dates due to current exchange rates jumping around.

The focus of this specific IC is on kitting. I'd like to get feedback on this now, so I can make several changes. I am waiting for SP to come back to me specifically with certain icon samples.

You know what 9009 is, and I wanted a basic, boring beige DCS set. I've been lazy since October, but now I want to push ahead. There's the inspiration. Red alert's color scheme, nor sleeper, were for me. This set uses Signature Plastics' classic WYSE fontface, making for once damn clean look :nut: wait this isn't discord...

WHY???
DCS does have much thinner plastic, and whilst this is (incorrectly) believed to be a detriment to quality caps, I have yet to find people who say they hate how it feels and sounds. Think of it as a more 'chirpy' cap, which simultaneously allows you to really feel the switch more. Simple physics, thin cap = less force dampening :D

Colors
Using stock SP colors, and compared to GMK

Expect a 5-10 USD Difference when vendors confirm pricing. My targets are relatively aggressive, considering MOQ breakdown

Base - $120 Target

Extensions (basic 40s and spaces) - $35 Target
Spacebars under 4.5u are always concave. Nothing I can do about that, so imagine blank shift keys just alpha colored.

Row 5 replacement kit - $25 Target
SP calls it R5. It makes more sense to call it R0 but eh, whatever.

For clarity, this is how R5 SP is profiled:

Relegendables (per row, 1-4) - $25 Target

Alps kit - $110 Target

A message direct from SP:

Alps doubleshot keys are cosmetically difficult to mold. The stem doesn’t have much plastic to hang onto when we mold a first shot under the key, so your customers should be aware that too much removal of the key from the switch could result in the switch breaking (we can’t offer replacements for these).

Deskmats
More
No.
If you want a themed mat, go ask Omnitype to make more. There are 1000s of deskmat designs, go use one of them.

Render samples

Render samples are just to give you an idea of how it looks. Colors have been matched as accurately as possible

Seen here on the Safa 5.88

Vendors & Pricing
All prices are my targets based on specific MOQs and feedback from certain vendors.
Group buy set to go live early September!!

US - Cannonkeys
EU - MyKeyboard.eu
UK - Prototypist
Oceania - Daily Clack
SEAS - Hex Keyboard
India - Rectangles.store
Canada - Apexkeyboards

For Gulf states, I recommend buying from Hex. I will accommodate shipping for the region specifically unless you choose to use SNS.

Updates
2021-04-14: Mod pipe added. Since everyone seems upset about this :D
2021-05-18: Received new quotes for updated kitting
2021-05-18: Colors confirmed
2021-08-01: Renders complete
2021-08-04: Vendors confirmed, GB dates speculated, waiting final confirmation

Credits

Fooblitzky - a massive shoutout to this guy for making things open source. I had trouble modelling things myself, without this renders would be 110% worse.

Janglad - for being a good lad
Renderman Bachoo - amazing job helping me visualize this
Tom - for the advice with ISO kitting
Uncle - your red accented Insert is coming :D

You were too quick for me, my browser didn't refresh. Uh, reserved but 2nd comment i guess

16/6/2021: After so much back and forth with certain people, and really my own preferences, I'm moving this back to Text+icon. It also makes more sense as some parts of this IC are a direct reference to G80 9009 HAU.

18/7/2021: Having trouble with certain vendors - working to resolve. Good news, rendering is working again, so hopefully soon ill be able to give updates. Something Something Alps

02/8/2021: Final Renders complete, final quotes being received from SP. GB target date set to early September. - Will bump thread with confirmed prices.

09/8/2021: GB target September 6th -> October 3rd. Awaiting Upas updates  :thumb:

Cool project, but I don't understand the legend choices for shift and caps. SP DCS does have an icon caps lock that looks normal, not like that strange hybrid one you posted (see DCS Rebel/OTD Red Alert). Same goes for shift, they have legends that are more boxy like the GMK icon mods. I'm personally not a big fan of the skinny arrows you currently have rendered, they really don't look coherent with the rest of the set. Photo credit goes to LightningXI.

Excited to see someone taking a stab at this colorway in a different profile tho, will be following closely! :thumb:

This kind of feedback is exactly why I IC'd rather than spend time on legends that may or may not be sufficient for those true fans of DCS WYSE style caps. I'm waiting for SP to come back to me with physical samples before making changes. As for the shifts, this must be an error in the CAD on my part - duly noted, and thank you for pointing that out. CapsLock, I must have a very strange version. I'll see if I can get a super high res version of it and work some magic (rendering with WYSE sucked, any little helps!)... wait thats a tesco ad...

If you end up going with those legends from the Rebel Red Alert/OTD Red Alert set please give credit to sixty from deskthority and Uranium from OTD. Those guys spent countless hours getting the right legend selection with SP.

Also, for full reference, that set came with two options for shift/tab legends. Seen here:

I'm personally a fan of the smaller, thicker shifts and the larger tab, demonstrated here:

A thick shift will come. The current tab is smaller than that on the ones found on OTD red alert. Again, once I get samples from SP, I can reconfirm and remodel where required.

Stepped control? Put it in the form so I can track, but I definitely, I'm down for that! Thank's for the support too! <3

I said this in the IC form but might as well say it here to see what others might think.

I would like for there to be a second numpad 5 barred variant for anyone who prefers barred over nipple. Just seems odd to me having bar and nip F + J but not 5.

SP needs some time to come back to me as I asked them for a lot of icon samples (I want to see the options I have before I make changes that I personally want). This won't be a rushed project.

Mod pipe will be added - yall are god damn thirsty for it!  :p

Looks great. Good old beige!

That said, I'm really curious how much more expensive this would be if it were PBT. PBT DCS is a lot nicer to me than ABS DCS.

Center stem stepped capslock here?
Why not DCS WYSE? Same classic white/gray scheme with navy font and yellow accent. If we love DCS we don’t need a halfsteps.

I dont mind having the thin DCS I've typed on it before and it lets you feel the switch more. It shows you the difference between the switches more.
I quite like the sound of DCS on some keyboards too!

The quotes for PBT for a base kit this large are insane - to the point that at the large MOQ breaks its more to manu than i would be selling as this in ABS. Future plans are for more DCS sets with smaller kits but ran in PBT, its the only feasible way.

  • Confirming a few things such as the stem locations for the stepped caps with SP. This is still an early IC :D
  • I personally am not a fan of the WYSE grey colors. I wanted beige specifically, just following the traditional fontface. Unsure what you mean by halfsteps.

Those are all things being confirmed. With the renders coming soon, I'll have several options for people to vote on. I'm not a fan of the backspace, but it does have a charm to it! And yes to caps, I traced it to be able to render it. Just been busy.

It would be cool to have usual stepped capslock and center stem stepped capslock both. Super cool for hotswap PCBs.
Yea, i realise that WYSE colors are really too gray! Cherry beige colors are more usual.

Downside view because tops are burned in peroxide.
I mean "not for hardcore WYSE fans", but actually DCS is very close to Topre and Space Invaders caps too.

I mentioned in the old kitting, that everything would be moving to icon only (so no text on any of the mods). It was a mistake in the renders :(

Do you have any recommendations? I'm happy to arrange this if it is urgent but after hunting around I haven't had a lot of interest from Canada itself.

Sam (kuma) wanted to run this, and left the server a week later when I assume he thought there was no activity on the project. And to be honest, kuma is 110% a big nope.

Now that we're bringing classic sets like 9009 and Honeywell into DCS, can we get some of the more exotic but restrained ABS sets like GMK Ocean Dolch, Skidolcha, Tai Hao Kingfisher, JTK Yolch, and maybe some of the crazier ABS ones like Nautilus Nightmares [gotta admit that one needs a do-over and would look good in DCS.]

I don't know if we'll ever see ePBT Slate again, but what about DCS Slate?

Anyway, this is probably the wrong place to ask.

Always feel free to ask. I have more DCS in the pipeline, but this time smaller base kits with more child kits. 9009 was kitted with 'big base' because, well, its beige, and a one size fits all (well most) was the best approach. However for almost every other instance, smaller kits are easier to wok with, and SPs pricing is significantly better off with smaller kits and higher MOQ.

In short, yes yes and yes!!! Jump into discord, throw some ideas there. I have plans for pbt as well, and colors are not as troublesome as one may think :D

I dont think i addressed this but, at the same MOQ, the cost alone would be close to $160, including vendor markups, and not including shipping, for the same base kit. PBT works with smaller bases and child kits. I wish i could but given DCS is not hugely popular already, ABS for this set at least was teh way to go. Plus, ABS DCS sounds insane. I'm unsure about pbt  ^-^

Alps kit yes!

But no numpad? :(

Given the low expectation of ALPS kit sales, its at a significantly low MOQ compared to the regular mx base.

That being said, if the alps kit does well, I will try my best to get some in stock numpad kits that can be put onto preorder. That, in the end, is each vendor's choice to support, but its something I am willing to push.

And no, it wont be charged at a premium for it being in stock, if you have purchased an ALPS base. I'll always try to support where I can  :p

Is the stem for the Alps ISO enter horizontally-oriented or vertically? Either way I'm in, but it would be handy to know if I'm going to have to modify my plate if I need to rotate that switch.
