Gundam/model building
« on: Thu, 19 March 2015, 13:29:20 »
Anyone out there into Gundam models? I used to be really into them as a kid, had about a dozen HG and 5 MG. I think this was before they started doing PG level models.

Anyway, I was just looking for a new hobby to pass the time and decided to pick up this cool looking Sazabi Ver. Ka model to get back in the game. RIP future shelf space :))

Anybody else build models of any kind, or even Gundams? Got any pro tips on making it look like it does in that picture?

I used to hold a lighter up to my HGs for custom "battle scarring"
Lost the few I had together in a move. I've still got some SD models somewhere around here I think..

I stopped the madness before it began..

I was very close to going all in with the compressor, the single hair brushes... etc..

That sazabi really enticed me, used to gundam-ing when I was a kid recently wanted to do it again

But don't think I have more spare times now...  :(
Been wanting a glass unicorn one...

I believe i have at least a hundred of Gundam models..
To make it looks good, I think get a sharp hobby knife and practice is most important  ^-^ and also get some very fine sand paper
the Sazabi in the picture probably painted on every parts because I think the Sazabi ver ka have a lighter red than the one in picture
I suck at paint though  :))

Started this gunpla hobby around my 20's just when the endless waltz series started. Now have a few HG and MG and 2-3 years back i do paint my gundams and tried customizing it. The latest model i bought is the red astray MG.

Really need to paint these models to make it look really good.

If i remember correctly these are what i do for each of my gundam.
- Cut each piece and group by body part then by color
- sand each part
- spray primer
- sand again with finer grit
- spray desired color
- do panel lining
- clear coat
- assemble

only fun part for me is the assemble part. lol

Weird, I was JUST going to ask if anyone was into this hobby. I just started getting into it and was hoping to find advice from those who've been doing it for awhile. Mostly I want to know what necessary tools are and any advice for painting.

As for actual models, I'm not too much into Gundam myself but other mech series such as Armored Core. I just got my hands on a couple models of the NEXT named Noblesse Oblige (name is a total coincidence) from the series. Might be awhile until I actually get around to assembling them though due to work. I was into car/plane/rocket models when I was young. Used to build them with my dad. It's probably been 20 years since then though.

I would love to see some pics of peoples better builds to get some ideas on what to do beyond filing/sanding and marking lines to make it look better without painting (I'm not ready to start painting $100 models yet. Maybe someday.)

What has been your favorite Gunpla to build? Which ones have the best shelf presence? Thinking about the GN-0000 + GNR-010 TRANS-AM RAISER as my next build if I can find one.

I will return to the gunpla world once I get proper airbrush equipment. :]

In other words, yes I build but they all suck lol.

Well the more I learn, the more expensive this hobby is getting :))

I'm anxious about painting a $100 model too. So I'm planning to order some cheaper models to practice on. For example I found the following model for $20 on ebay: http://www.amazon.com/Kotobukiya-Armored-Core-Rosenthal-CR-Hogire/dp/B0074ZTOBK

Once I order all the proper tools and paints for it I may do a build log.

The repair effects on this one are really cool. I love the way it looks naturally corroded around the weld lines

Yes and yes. It goes pretty deep bruh. Which is why I had to bail. Already had too many DIY hobbies when all I wanted was something pretty on my desk.

Only things I look at nowadays are hi quality pre-made models like: "Gundam Metal Build" series or the "Macross DX Chogokin" or "Macross Yamato/Arcadia"

That is also the reason why i stopped cause its too expensive to maintain especially once all the materials and equipment accumulated. Good thing some of the materials for painting i can use in may keycaps.

It really does, especially the 2 samurai swords which is why i choose red frame instead of the blue frame back then.

Good thing its a bit easier here to get most of the supplies i need. I still need to drive to the city to get to the actual store which i prefer over online. But yeah, expensive as hell just for the paints/primer/top coats.

They have a simplistic, yet simultaneously complex, beauty to them, especially when left as just skeletons. I had built 8 models over the course of a 2 year period where I really focused on building them, although I haven't found any time for them recently. My goal is to finish the P-38 within this year: that's my sort of personal ultimatum.

imo, any paint that work on abs plastic can do the job.  I really don't think there is huge difference between paint that you can get from any hardware store and "model paint"

PG Unicorn :X Its so nice, but out of those two the 00 Raiser never really liked the zeta, also might have to try find a RG something for someone if you all do start painting them as a prize :) would be nice to get people into this.

Now I just have to wait 5 months till HLJ restocks the MG GM Kai :( I ended up waiting 6 months for the MG Geara Doga :X but I have got into nendoroids currently little buggers are just too cute :x
