I think this is honestly an over done topic that has already been asked a number of times previously. I suggest you make use of the search function and read through some of the old threads to see what people like.

Well I mean according to the "OCN Guide" blacks are the best but I would have to disagree with that. Too stiff.

I was just curious of what the people of geekhack's personal gaming preference were and why.

And I think limiting it to cherry switches is pretty small. (typed on space invaders)

I'm currently using blues but I'm not a fan of the bump in all fairness. My girlfriend said once our daughter is born I can treat myself to any keyboard I want. I'm probably going to go for blacks or reds. I've got quite heavy hands I find but the colour of the red switches just draw me in. :$

Brown for me but Topres are so nice in their own right.

Also, this topic has been discussed to death many times on the forum. You don't even need the search function, there are at least 2 threads on the first two pages deeply discussing this.

This thread should give you most of the info you want: http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?19529-SC2-RTS-Player-wanting-choc-mini-red-or-brown-switch

I would says blacks, then reds for gaming. Reds soft, and good for long periods of time. Blacks offer ability to ride actuation point better, and they prevent those accidental presses on occasion. Then there's just the weight preference between the two. Linear is what I definitely prefer though for gaming, and overall.

I just tried my new Unicomp Spacesaver on Day of Defeat: Source and Age of Empires 2.

On FPSs, the Buckling Spring is just average. I have nowhere near the same control as I do with my Deck Legend which is a Black Switch. The response is poor when you move around, IMO. I don't even think it is as good as a rubberdome for FPSs. The click does nothing. Despite that, I still got a lot of kills.

On the RTS, it did fine. But for moving around the map, again, the black switch was better. Quicker and more responsive. Many people like the blue switches because of the click you get which is good for RTSs so you know when the item/unit has been chosen. But for me it didn't really do anything. I listen to the sounds in the game to tell me what I've selected. I like the way my Deck feels when queuing unites. Lots of control.

So for me the Black Switch is the best keyboard on the market for gaming. It is perfect. I have never tried any other color, though. Buckling Springs are amazing for typing. Probably the best.

I love Brown/Red/Black/Topre for gaming with Brown/Red for RTS and Black/Topre for FPS.

That said, all the above named switches are basically interchangeable and it's 100% preference. I personally HATE Blacks for RTS but some people swear by them. The only way you can know is try it out.

No they don't use browns/blues. IdrA uses Q-Senn DT35 which has membrane domes or a SS 6gV2. Majority of Korean pros use the DT35, too. Boxer uses blues.

Most players use SS keyboards which feature blacks or use standard dome keyboards.

There you go. Towards the end of thread there is a bigger list, I believe. Not many but I've seen tons of gameplays from over the shoulder angles.

The Q-Senn is the most popular SC2 keyboard for pros. Especially in Korea.

Most korean sc2 progamers use Qsenn(simple membrane keyboard and very cheap)very few use mecanical keyboards ,i m not user that because qsenn is so cheap and they can replace them easy or because they find qsenn better to play on.Tbh alote of people say mecanical keyboards are more durable then membrane but thats simply not true.

DT35 will be the most popular SC keyboard for at least a couple more years due to their popularity in SC1. I'd wager as more and more gaming keyboards are mechanical that will change.

Keyboards in the SC2 community are just a fad. People seen Boxer using the Filco w/ blues with keys pulled off, so they started doing it. Seen Tyler use brown switches, they got browns. Seen IdrA with SS6gv2, they got blacks... so on and so forth.

I'd say black n red when talking about mech boards. I don't mind brown either cuz in the action phase you barely notice the crusty bump.

Even a nice, stable, gaming oriented (for kro) board is good enough, really...

Honestly, it's all about knowing your board and how many hours you've ride it and not the switch.

Ergo clears are the best for typing and reasonably good for gaming.

If I wanted a gaming only keyboard I went for rubber dome or scissor switch

This

I prefer Reds as an overall switch as I feel they are better balanced, which is why I own two such boards, but if I had to choose a switch strictly for gaming it would be Blacks for those exact reasons (easier actuation point riding, etc)

This isn't to say the other switches are bad for gaming, and I can definitely see the value of Blue and Brown (or Clear) for other types of games such as RTS or RPG, but for the most part I can't see any switch other than Black being best for the majority of games.

Not to say anyone's opinion is wrong, but I also feel a lot of people who choose some other switch are doing so because that's the switch they are used to more so than giving all the switches an equal shot over a large number of games, and a lot of people just won't like Blacks for balanced use.

No one suggest them because they aren't available "in nature" and people here prefers to spend money in pointless Filcos rather than trying to have the best.

Think to them as blue switches, w/o the click and w/o the hysteresis

you get used to blacks so quickly, you wonder how you ever went on without them. Blacks barely take a little more effort than pressing the keys on a regular laptop, and after a day or 2 i personally got fully used to them, now cant type with anything else.

All the other switches pale in comparison, the black switch is my choice for typing, and of course gaming hands down. The control I have with the higher resistance makes sure I never make typos or mistakes in typing a letter or making split millisecond actions in a pc game.

one question i think is important to include for a thread like this is the additional "why do you prefer that switch" attached to the question.  i absolutely LOVE the reds because of how light the spring pressure is. maybe it's psychological but i feel like a keyboard that  has a lighter spring than another similar keyboard can be used faster/more efficiently because you have that much less pressure to go through when actuating the switch.

also, merely as a personal preference, i prefer a linear switch over any tactility for gaming. typing is kind of another story though.

If I was just going to get one board out the MX's though it would probably be the reds just as I prefer them a little more for typing.

Something important to consider, lots of opinions here, but no K:D ratios or screen shots to back it up.  Careful not to take advice from a newb!  Also, these are which switch THEY prefer, you'll really need to try the switch yourself to know what's best for you.

Actually, I posted a link to a thread that discussed this to death and actually had the advice of a skilled player. Here it is again because people just LOVE discussing the same topic over and over again even though we have multiple threads on the front page about the same exact crap...

I'm a 200 APM High-Master Zerg player (I play vs low Grand Masters occasionally to give you an MMR idea). Screwed around with a few switch types, and I'm really quite fond of Browns. I got myself an oldschool Cheery NKRO Brown keyboard and haven't looked back. It is much easier to play for long periods of time then with my Black board, and I enjoy it more then my buddy who has Clears (although he seems to like clears more). Blues are comparable, but I do quite a bit of streaming and/or Skype, and the noise is just too much.

Obviously, preference will always win out over popularity or opinion, but if you have no idea what switch you might enjoy (coming from a rubber dome keybord etc) I'd say Browns. Often times you will spam between keys rapidly, and Brown just seems to favor that the most out of the switch types I have tried.

I should also mention that I type ~130wpm and Browns are almost as nice as Blues for just general typing: which is also a plus. I can't stand typing for long periods of time on my Blacks keyboard: which has been strictly relegated to 3d shooters only now.

Blue (Razer BlackWidow Ultimate) definetely, but thats because I only gamed on Blue's, except for an hour on CeBIT on Blacks (Meka G1). Next up the Das Model S Silent Ultimate (I sure love a KB when it has Ultimate in its name(am I being brainwashed by companies' marketing?))

For sc2, I really could use any cherry switch and get by.

For Team Fortress 2 I main soldier and the timing between crouching, jumping, and firing the rocket are crucial to how high or how far you will go.  Here I need auditory feedback and if I had to choose a cherry switch I'd take the blue's.

For gaming I prefer black switches versus topre (only thing I can comment on). For me typing and gaming on black switches just feels nostalgic somehow.
