Toshiba Qosmio X500 Core i7-720QM Laptop Beast
« on: Wed, 30 September 2009, 03:09:20 »
This looks like a BEAST - I bet the battery lasts about 40 mins in all-singing, all-dancing mode.No price yet, but I bet it'll be £2K plus.If my boat comes in, if and when my gaff gets sold- I would't say no.

I have two friends with Tosh lapdogs and they say that they're bombproof. One, Babs in Mesa, Arizona has said hers got really hot left in the sun in Summer and it still worked fine.

Rob in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England has another one and he's a motor mechanic. His Toshy has been dropped, had petrol and engine oil spilt on it and has got gouges in it from an angle-grinder "slip" but it keeps working. He plugs it into his BMW 318Ti to tune the ECU whilst he's on the road.

I think there is a point at which a desktop is more appropriate than a laptop. You can build or buy a desktop, which will likely be even more powerful, for less money than this will likely be. These machines are for showing off and nothing more, in my opinion.

I totally agree CX23882.I've always prefered building my own desktops for loads of reasons :

You get more for your money
                  More reliable
                  Less overheating problems
                  More customisable
They cost less than equivalent laptops - 1/4 of cost ?
                  More rugged etc etc

I'm just amazed that they can make a core i7 extreme that's portable. Also, would these sort of high-end laptops make things smaller, lighter and more efficient in general computing - I don't know.

If you must have real mobile computing power; these would obviously be amazing.

People reckon that high-end laptops are heavy - 10-12 lb or whatever but these are nothing compared to the monster radio-cassette boomboxes that I carried around in the early/mid eighties - some were 30lbs plus without batteries!

Since my job provides me with a laptop, I only use desktops at home.  I can take my work laptop if I need to compute on the go.

As you can sumrise from my pic, I do a fair amount of traveling. I dragged an IBM Thinkpad 600E to Iraq and a Toshiba Satellite to Afghanistan. The Thinkpad is on its third keyboard but is otherwise sound and still fast enough for normal desktop tasks. Other than broken screen locking tabs, the Toshiba is none the worse for its travels and runs WoW like a champ. I'd recommend either.
