Varmilo keycaps compared to GMK, Tai Hao?
« on: Sun, 02 April 2017, 12:39:11 »
I'm considering purchasing a set of Varmilo dye subliminated PBT keycaps since they are one of the few with ISO-DE support. Can the thickness be compared to GMK or are they somewhere inbetween Tai Hao and GMK? Also I heard the profile is comparable to Cherry but not quite the same? Would GMK modifers with Varmilo alphas look odd?

They're as thick as GMK caps and the texture is the best IMO. Close to OEM profile so it's a bit weird along side Cherry

The profile is Step sculpture 2 pretty close to cherry profile of gmk.

They are thick but not as thick as Enjoypbt keysets which are cherry profile caps.

But you have unlimited customization, being able to choose the dyesub color, i saw someone posting a chart of that here somewhere.

Taihao would look like trash compared to the 2 other keycap makers you've mentioned. (they are thin, they have flash(excess plastic), OEM profile, and the antibiosis texture is crap)

Same as Filco, which for me was a major factor in choosing to order one.

Are you saying filco caps are cherry profile?

That's the first time I've heard that claim made, everyone else says they are OEM profile.

Filco caps also aren't thick and are ABS not PBT like the caps mentioned above.

I think he meant Leopold, coz they use SS2 Profile too.

Filcos use OEM.

I always get those 2 brands mixed up as well.

Nope, I had read that Filco uses OEM profile too but I came across this thread and it seems that it's changed. So... Dunno. :blank:
And I know that Filco keycaps are thin ABS, I'm new to the mechkey world but I did some reading around.

You realize you referenced the thread where I made it clear the person was confused between Leopold and Filco right?

Got confused by KnivesM's reply, my bad. So Leopold = SS2, Filco = OEM.

Varmilo is around 1.2 or 1.3 mm, I can't find my caliper now.
A little thiner than other good quality PBT caps(1.5mm).
It should be Cherry profile but I didn't compare them very carefully.
Maybe there's a little difference.

Tai-hao is not using the coat any more.
Unless you get old stock, but they've changed it for a while, it's should not be easy to get old stock.
Some of their keycaps use old box says it with coat, but actually they don't.
They just use old boxes.
They finally change their boxes design this year I think.
But indeed Tai-Hao has only around 1mm thickness.

I am looking at them also, but I have generally heard positive things. The fact they are PBT and ISO makes them a win in my book.

Some pictures of Varmilo dye sub keycaps:

This is how they look in a very dimly lit room with max bright LEDs.
