Looks nice. What’s the weight?

Damn the prototype looks so nice, have to pick the colors first!

ิbtw no front accessory version would be nice but it's impossible atm I guess, have to pick the same color as top case then.

About 2-2.5kg depends on the options

How is the white anodizing made?

My guess is "super silver," since this doesn't look like MAO, but I've been wrong before.

Looks really nice, the price is good, and expected shipping date is very soon. Almost looks too good to be true!

Post by: Unforgivable on Sat, 27 January 2018, 18:45:28
Yeah, I’m assuming he meant Silver, not White due to the anode examples on the form.

This looks nice. I liked the first version, but...

Anyway, did you build it yet to insure there are no clearence issues on the inside?

-What kind of PCB will it come with? (Included in base price, correct?)
-Can you show how thick the weight is?
-How tall is it from the front?

Sorry for all the questions, I was just curious! :)

Edit: The more I look at the sample pictures, the more I want it. It’s really nice.

Looks good, though I would prefer more of a silver colored screw in the weight. The black just stands out so much and almost looks too big for where it is, appears to stick further out than the plate, meaning the board would rest on the screws first?

I get using bumpons to elevate it, or protect the bottom, but I would imagine the board should be able to lay flat without needing an extra purchase.

Silver white is just matte silver ano, which looks more white than glossy silver. Prototype is this color.

pretty much every kit has bumpons included

that makes a little more sense, thanks

I haven't got the time to assemble it but all the parts fits perfectly as far as I can see.

PCB was provided by another team. It can be programmed with bootmapper client.

Weight is about 6mm thick.

2cm tall.

The screws in the photos were not fastened. The bottom is flat.

And Puddsy is right we will provide bumpons.

I can try to source screws in other colors if it bothers more people.

^ An rgb pulse from left to right would look stellar.

Also, plate options - is polycarb possible? Only alu and brass plates is quite a dealbreaker when it’s all about that typing experience.

I love that it has the option for 6.25u 86key! This alone makes it so tempting to join. Oh well, I'll spend my time trying to imagine a color combination that I'd like to see in this if I do join. I also think an acrylic diffuser of some sorts would be nice to have as an option.

The front accessory is not that easy to make. If someone can really make a diffuser, that's totally possible.

it's become less common to say as people use more and more custom boards, or become more knowledgeable about them

"So recently I've ordered a custom of every size I use... except TKL... I wonder when that Mars board will go to GB?"
^Me earlier this morning.

That silver ano looks so clean!

Are you going to be getting more color samples on actual board parts?

I'm trying to imagine what a purple front accessory would look with a black plate and a silver case ;)

You have the option to buy an extra brass front accessory, but would it be possible to, say, buy an extra aluminum one in a different color?
I really would love to have a purple, and a black or red.
Can they be swapped with the PCB in place?

The current case design doesn't support middle diffusers because the seam between two parts are is not all flat.
I'm modifying the design to make it support mid diffusers. However I'm not able to make samples because of the Chinese New Year.

What's for sure is the final case will support mid diffusers and I'll at least provide the files to make them.
It's also possible I'll provide the diffusers to those who joined GB.

1. More samples are not possible right now. As I mentioned previously, most factories in China has stopped running because of the CNY holiday.

2. I didn't provide that option because I assume most people won't want two aluminum ones. DM me if you have suck special request and I can change your order.

As I look in more and more for this page, I am not quite sure about this GB. When I read this post, GB page isn't that different from IC.  I think it is wise to do GB after Chinese spring holidays with enough samples and consider about these demands. But at this point with these uncertain status I don't feel like joining.

That shouldn't be a concern since aluminum is pretty strong material and the plate is thick enough. Also the plate is not a part that would take a lot of force.

I'm certain this project has been well prepared at the current stage, that's why GB comes out.

I've got a lot of experience from the the previous project snowflake. The GB was canceled but everything was finished and tested.

Right now the prototype is almost perfect which well verified the design. The PCB is a previously designed PCB with mature firmware. The change on the case for supporting mid diffusers is a very easy modification. Nothing can go wrong. We're not bottomnecking anything.

This is the first GB of mine but won't be the last one. I won't take any risks to make my first batch of supporters down, and they will not.

Can we also install in-switch LEDs with sip sockets?

An anodized strip to match the front accessory would be cool for those of us who don't care for LED stuff :o

An anodized strip to match the front accessory would be cool for those of us who don't care for LED stuff :o

Also: Did you get my PM? I just want to make sure my request was alright.

Will be an extra option.

no anodized strips

Yes. Will reply your message with price later.

South facing LEDs.

Will it come with south facing LEDs by default?
Can we also install in-switch LEDs with sip sockets?
What software is used to program the firmware? QMK?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Bootmapper Client. QMK can also be ported but I don't have the skills.

Awesome, thank you for your reply! My cousin was going to go for the kbdfans TKL group buy but now he is definitely going for this because of the plate and icon color options. We were just making sure about the LED situation before committing.

Important update:

Just got a quote for the diffuser which turns out to be very cheap.

So the decision is diffusers will be included for everyone who joins for free.

design need to be slightly change. No differences from the outside.

THe diffusers are optional. You can choose either install it or not. It will be included anyway.

I'm not able to fully build a board until the end of CNY.
GB ends in 6 days though.
May re-open GB for 1 day or so after posting new photos to allow people in doubt like you join.

Any chance of offering assembly service? (I'm guessing no but worth a shot)

Could you give anymore details on PCB?  You said it's a previously used mature PCB, but other than that nothing specific..

Sounds like buying a 2nd PCB would be a good idea if it's non-standard/not readily available (from say winkeyless/etc)

sorry, no assembly services

The PCB is an ATMEGA32A PCB which can be re-programmed with Bootmapper client. The guy provided the PCB to me also makes many other PCBs for some famous/unfamous custom keyboards. He just slightly changed the logo of a previously used PCB and provide it to my case. There's nothing can be wrong for a 32A PCB. That's why I said it's a mature PCB.

I don't have other commonly used 80% PCBs for testing but TX87 pcb might work according to the USB port position. I can't say it fits for sure.

Here are some pics of Mars 8.0 with keycaps. I don't have a keyset to pair the white case so these pics are more for testing the dimension. Everything fits well as expected.

The PCBs are working perfectly.

The diffuser prototype needs some modifications. It's a easy modification so I'll just place the order for all the diffusers.

Production will begin soontm   :)

OK. We're expecting to finish the production around the end of this month or early next month.

GB form re-opens one day for those who were hesitated to join and just get confidence from this update.

since it's anodized you're better off getting it matched after it shows up

anodizing is never quite a perfect match to the chip

Did we ever hear anything back about colored screws or brass/anodized diffuser?

I'm going fully black & brass (I don't like LEDs), so a brass diffuser would be awesome, but otherwise I just won't include it in my build.

Brass screws would be awesome but I don't know if that's possible.

Generally, anodized screws are hard to find in specific sizes. If you want them, I'd suggest looking after you know what sizes you need, and just buying them yourself.

Brass screws, same deal.

I was actually thinking about sourcing some anodized screws for myself, so if anyone wants to know where I got them (when I actually buy them), I'll post it here.

Sylvester: What size screws are in the case? (Threads, length, head style, etc?)

There might be a little delay. I really hope I can stick to the original timeline so I'm pushing the factory to hurry up. Even it will be delayed, it won't be long. There will be a major update about the current status in several days. I will get some photos from the factory and have a new estimation of shipping date.

To be honest, I didn't expect that. Because of the (imho) kinda thight time calculation I was expecting it to be like one month late... I guess you're doing good work, thanks for that :)

He said anodizing will be finished in several days and he'll get pics of the cases within several days (see the following two quotes). I guess he'll get the pics when they are all finished and is going to let us have a look on the colors :)

Nice to hear that it's going on good, I'm really looking forward to getting the board - switches are already waiting for it!

You're one of 30 in the group buy. There are some extra boards for my self and several friends. So in general you are one of 40 who own Mars 8.0!
Oof, I expected there to be much more orders... but well, at least I can say I have a special and kinda rare board (though I won't be able to get a second one in case I really need one lol) :)

I am so glad I went with the red case, that looks so good.
I am currently so mad at myself that I did choose the gray one and neither the black, red nor white one... gray will be like the most boring colors of all, at least in case it'll be like I imagine it.
Only because I was afraid of not getting a keyset that'd fit it... though og cherry doubleshots fit like every case color. rip me.

But well, worst case will be getting it anodized in one of the other colors somewhere here in germany, in case I really can't stand that grey.
I'm still really looking forward to getting it, the color won't destroy the great design for me!

Ugh... looking forward to getting mine and asking someone how much it'd cost to re-anodize it in black/red/silver white. That grey wasn't a good idea, but I realized it too late. But still, the board seems to turn out very nice!

Btw, in case anyone with a silver white, red or black one would like to get a grey one (trade): Message me

That anodizing looks REALLY good!
I 'm an engineer at an aerospace company, and we have a hard time finding vendors who can do this kind of work consistently... It's baffling to me that my keyboards have nicer anodizing than the $6000+ sensors we sell.

Ooh, does the black plate anodizing look matte like the case black anodizing?
The purple looks pretty "typical", but that's okay. I got a black plate, so if it's like "Vanta-plate: the empty abyss" levels of black like that case, that'd be SUPER cool.

Also glad to hear everything's going smoothly. I'm excited!

It looks a bit more white/grey to me than the original pictures, but that might have had more to do with the lighting than anything else. Nothing sticks out as blemishes with the ano though.

Did it come with that blemish? That's weird because we checked every board very carefully. We even took photos before packing every kit. Here is an photos of your case before shipping:

You can see from the spreadsheet this is the only green case had been ordered. We won't treat these blemishes as normal.

These look like collision damages. Do you have any idea or clues what caused the issues?

It appeared to be packed very well, and the case was in the plastic bag, followed by brass weight, extra plate, and pen. Nothing jumped out at me as "poor packing" when I opened it, quite the contrary. I suppose it's possible the brass weight (albeit wrapped in protective foam) could have possibly been involved in banging around inside the inner edges. I dunno?

The picture I posted was taken right after I unpacked it (No chance to bang it up myself). The blemish is on the left side of the case (nears CAPS LOCK) which you can't see in the picture you posted. If you have a picture pre-packing that shows the inner left rail in good condition, it was likely a result of shipping damage. As far as I can tell the rest of the case looks pretty great aside from that one spot.

I received mine. Few minor blemishes but nothing major. Mostly tiny chips on the plate.

Anodizing is okay but the inside edges on the top are little bit uneven compared on the outside edges.

Kindly check my pcb, all of em lights up but one is different. All of em are white and one is purple. Can this be changed from the software? I am worried cause i have an led strip that one led color got stuck and can’t be changed.

As suspected, I've checked it with Bootmapper client that LED doesn't change the same color when I change color profiles. Sometimes it is just dead especially the color that I wanted which is Green.

Any Fix with this Sylvester?

I got mine.
But there is a serious problem with the pcb.
It does not support 86 keys.
The switch hole is wrong.

Is this going to be an issue for all who ordered the 86 TKL version??

I do think so... at least as long as all the pcbs are the same and sykim didn't get like a proto-pcb or something like that.

Just asked the PCB supplier. They admit the PCB does have problems on compatibility.

I've asked them to get it revised. It will take roughly 10-15 days. A new PCB will be sent to you. Please PM me if you need to change shipping address.

Wait what?If there was a problem with compatibility why did they send them to you? That's just poor handling on their part.

Kindly check my pcb, all of em lights up but one is different. All of em are white and one is purple. Can this be changed from the software? I am worried cause i have an led strip that one led color got stuck and can’t be changed.

It seems like one pin of the LED has a contact problem. Could you try to re-solder all the 4 pins of the LED and see if it can fix the problem?

Is this a right way? I’m new to this and I just know how to solder. Haven’t tried desoldering.

4 buyers who bought 86 keys layout will get new PCBs: sykim0310, Vewy_nice, hachi8free, tlautrec

Adding more solders on the 4 pins of the LED should fix 90% LED issues. Let me know if the LED doesn't work anyway.

The PCB supplier is the guy who provided PCBs for most Chinese custom keyboards. I didn't expect he would make such mistakes.

First impression was I thought it looked more grey IRL than I was expecting. I think these photos make it appear lighter than it is. I was worried I accidentally received grey but this is probably silver / white.

Second impression was that there are a few noticeable imperfections here and there. There's definitely some spots I didn't capture in these photos. Nothing too terrible, but not 100% perfect. The brass plate definitely has some cosmetic issues going on.

Third, the two PCBs I bought light up as expected no LED issues at least. I have a Duck Viper which has LED issues like the ones described here and I even soldered in new LEDs on the Viper without any luck. Very glad as I'm expecting to use this as my new daily replacing the Viper.

Edit: On the plus side none of the above is a deal breaker for me and I think the case and PCB look amazing. I'm very happy with how things went especially considering how quickly the group buy was fulfilled and delivered.

Thanks Sylvester!!! Also appreciate the bonus gift, very cool!

The prototype pics look like they were taken outside on a sunny day, so they appear whiter than in person. Pretty much all silver is just clear (no dye) anodizing, so I would imagine it's just the way the photo was taken.

Can you replace the PCB with working LEDs. Adding more solder to it won't work on my situation as the LED is getting power and changing color. Green element is borked.

Thank you

Could you try to use another cable or test on another computer? The PCB should work on your computer if it worked on your friend's. The bottom RGB LEDs have great power consumption so don't plug the keyboard to the hub. Plug it directly to the embedded USB ports on your computer.

I just had it plugged into my mac and all was well. I used bootmapper to lower the LED brightness as default was a little to bright for me. The I brought it back over to my windows computer and plugged it in with a new cable and the old one and they both seem to work just fine now. Maybe it was just a little hiccup but all is working great now!  Thanks again for putting this together, Sylvester!

As mine isn't shipped yet I think I won't have 'all these problems' because you are aware of them now and can check my stuff for it, Sylvester? :P

And regarding the additional, second pcb I didn't initially order: In case you have a pcb with dead LEDs or something like that I'd take it as second pcb, in case you won't have a working one or it'd be noticeable cheaper :)

Tried to resolder the LEDs but I cant get them to work and my multimeter is showing a solid connection. Some LED's end up turning on when I touch the multimeter or soldering iron to them, but I am too lazy to figure out what is wrong. The main issue I have is that the screws/tapped holes for the screws between top/bottom case won't let me tighten the top case to the bottom without the acrylic midsection. Either the holes were tapped too short, the screws are too long, or there is too much crap in the hole (which I doubt because I blew them out with compressed air). I'd be happy to buy another PCB off of you Sylvester if you can show the LED's before you ship it out, otherwise I'm a bit dissapointed with the worksmanship if my board. Gonna have to buy some new screws soon or retap the holes, which I don't think should be an issue on a delivered board.

Another issue that i've had is that the acrylic diffuser is actually a bit of a tight fit in one corner so while it sits flush in the other 3 corners in this one it's pushed in.You can't really notice it because it's in the front side of the board but still.I might try to smooth the inside edge with a file or something so it fits better.

Well, I guess I'll have to wait for mynew PCB then!

I still haven't gotten mine yet, I had to delay the DHL shipment because I wasn't home.

I don't anticipate having any LED issues, as I plan on desoldering them (Underglow? Yuck.)

I'll see what I can do about the case screws being too long to use without the diffuser. I probably have the right size tap, I can tap my holes a bit deeper.

Those "easy-out" things are hard as frig to use, especially on small screws and bolts.

Is it COMPLETELY rounded?
Sometimes I find that you can fit a Torx driver of a slightly larger size into stripped hex bolts and it'll grip like mad, especially if you force it down into the root of the socket.

Yeah it's kinda completely rounded.I'll probably resort to drilling the screw and hammering a torx head in or something.

See if you can find a left handed drill bit of the appropriate size. Sometimes when you're trying to drill the head off, it'll just magically back the screw out for you!

Also, another option is to get a bit that's slightly bigger than the threads of the screw, and drill the head off, so you're left with just a "stud" with threads left. Then lift the back case off, and grip the stem with pliers, and twist them out that way!

If you don't feel comfortable fixing it, I know it'd be expensive, but I do a lot of really small, delicate work, and I have a really nice drill press. I could do it for you. (Wrap that sucker in high-density foam and lots of tape to protect that beautiful finish, whatever you do!)
Maybe you're nearby, who knows.

Hm i haven't seen the second method used but it sounds like it'd get the job done.So i basically just drill the top of the screw off? Won't that risk damaging the inner thread though?

I finished building for Jeffboird: Mars 8.0 with GMK Blue on Black, 65g Zealios and holtites. Some of the holtites were a perfect fit, but at least 20 switches needed them to be soldered in place.

Minor dings on the plate, like others, and a few on the case. One LED has a bad blue (the one on the bottom row near z/x/v) but otherwise a very solid group buy and board. :D

A very good looking board. Congrats to you and jeffboird!

A word of warning before anyone makes the same mistake as me, 2x3x4 leds in the south position will make contact with gmk caps. I’ve ordered some 1.8mm leds and I’ll let you know if those work.

Another thing to point out. If you have the underglow on, leds will not shine at their maximum brightness. Although that could just be the USB port I’m using.

What type of screws are holding the case together? I can barely tell what I'm looking at here. Are these allen key? I feel like I may have stripped one but I also feel like I can't tell what screw head these are either. Also feel like it takes a lot to squeeze the case actually closed.

Someone said M2 earlier. I'll have to grab a proper set.

M2.5 I believe. They are allen / hex key. I replaced them with standard flathead m2.5 screws because using a hex key to open it up every time is annoying. Just be sure to get the right length.

This pcb still doesn't fit into my top case.

Do I have to wait for another 2 weeks and get a new pcb?
Or do I need to get a refund?

Today a new pcb arrived.
This pcb still doesn't fit into my top case.

1. There is no stab hole.
2. The left window key switch hole is incorrect.

Do I have to wait for another 2 weeks and get a new pcb?
Or do I need to get a refund?

Did anyone get any replies/news re: the new pcb? :(

I am unsure what rev. PCB I received, but mine has stabilizer holes.
I haven't yet started assembling yet, so I don't know if it's the most recent or not.

I emailed Sylvester about a different issue on the 15th and haven't received a reply.

I’m referring to the 86 key TKL pcbs that didnt quite work out both the first and second round. :(

Yeah that's what I'm talking about.

I got 2 PCB's, the original one that didn't work with my case layout, and a second one that has stab holes, but I haven't checked if it lines up with the layout properly yet (Desk is messy, too many other projects!)

I am also waiting on the last of the 3 MARS accent inserts I ordered... Since my original package was missing 2, and the second PCB came with 2 others, but one of them was the wrong color, and machined wrong!

Just finished building mine after it arrived this morning.
I initially ordered a gray one, which (luckily) didn't pass QC. Sylvester then gave me the possibility to change the colour to black. Due to that the shipping took quite a bit longer than planned.

The white Mars box looks super nice, defenitely something I'm gonna keep, in case the board won't be standing on my desk all time. The pen also looks good, feels very worthy. Didn't get to try it yet.

One pcb works fine, though bootmapper client is kinda special to use for me... but it works. Still gotta test the second one.
My board is completely flawless without any dents or ano issues, just simple and nice black.
The diffuser sits very stiff, but I already removed and re-applied mine twice without breaking it.
One issue with it, though: The screws are about 1mm too long to use the board without the diffuser. Gonna fix that for me tomorrow, due to shortening the screws.
I have no idea why, but my screws are golden - I'm very impressed by that, looks better with brass plate and brass inlay than silver screws would do.

Right now I have no quality pictures due to bad lightening, but maybe I'll post some tomorrow.

Btw, weight is 3,45kg (7,6lb). I'm suuuper happy with this :)

e: On the second pcb, only 4 of the rgb leds are working. The others are red and won't change their color.
Sylvester, I don't really need a new pcb with them working, but how about a partial refund of the $40 for the second pcb? :)

Fingers crossed for the stab holes to be there. I’m currently travelling so I can’t verify my pcbs yet :’( let me know when you eventually get down to building! :)

There you go.
Only difference to stock layout: I have FN on rctl instead of ralt, due to needing altgr for german layout.

Thank you but i fixed it last night.Apparently if you set it into bootloader mode and hit a key it will show you the corresponding position.

Yeah, me too. I wonder where he went?
I'd be interested in buying a black MARS logo insert if anyone has one. I also could trade a silver, and MAYBE a purple or red.

I'm quite worried as well, my keyboard hasn't been sent at all. Shipping label created on April 20th, but no updates on the tracking and DHL told me they never received it.

Yeah that's definitely a much larger issue than me receiving the wrong color MARS accent piece...

Has ANYONE gotten any contact from Sylvester recently?

I didn't get any messages from Sylvester lately, but I didn't ask him anything, too.

Aaaand jumping in on the logo trades: I have a red one, would want a silver/gray one. Shipping from germany, with insurance and tracking.

Alright, been in contact with Sylvester and turns out the DHL proxy lost it, but now the factory's made up a replacement and it's on the way so everything's good.

Mines done. I freaking love this thing.
Best ano of any board I have!

Also glad to hear everything is working out.
The shipping proxy initially lost my extra MARS accent pieces, too. They don't seem like a very competent forwarder.

Anyone know how to reflash the pcb and put it into bootloader mode? I accidentally
had a couple keys pressed when connecting it in.

Press either U or Ctrl+U while plugging it in,that should set it on the bootloader mode

Should have posted this earlier, black/brass looks great. Seems very high quality, can't tell much until I build it though.
But at first sight and while handling it looks and feels amazing.

The more time I spend looking around at some other boards of this quality, the more I realize how reasonable the pricing actually was as well. Then again, I had to ruin the low price point by going and upgrading the entire thing to brass

Does anyone know what the "pen" like thing is that came with the keyboard? I thought it was a pen until I realized that it was solid with no way that I can see to open it.

Has there been any talk of working on a QMK port?
And/or, how to get more LED colors out of bootmapper client?

Been really enjoying the heft of this board, though!

Also does anyone know if I can get a space diffuser?

Thanks!

Would it be possible for you to share the files for the diffuser? Mine has broken so I'd love to get another cut.

Mine was broken on arrival. Shouldn't be hard to measure it out to get something cut though right? Pretty simple piece of acrylic

It’s been a while but is there a pcb that I could buy for replacement? My board stopped working believe it short circuited somewhere.
