It's an ergologic 7.1.  Also sold as a chicony flexpro.  Eek, wrong picture.

The one from the top picture is a comfort keyboard.  Never could get a decent handle on the name.

Gah, I must have been having a senior moment - wrong left.

Dat datahand

Got a favorite or two out of the bunch?

Out of those pictured, I'd say the datahand.  I don't use it sadly.
Worst of the bunch is the smartfish.  If they just paid a bit more attention to the way humans are built (or just dropped the numpad), then it would be much better.  The novelty of it moving under your hands when you're typing never gets old, though.

im always impressed when people own a datahand but holy **** somebody actually owns an Alphagrip; i haven't seen anyone on geekhack own one of those except in the archives--It looks silly and impossible to use (yes even the Datahand and Orbitouch to me seem more practical) yet for some reason ive wanted one for gaming but the price is a turn off.

I doubt you'd like it for gaming, but if it fits your hands then it's really easy to learn/pick up quick and the speed isn't too bad.  Surprisingly so.  It could really do with being programmable - especially for the punctuation.  It's just a little too small and noisy for me, but I'd say the price isn't too far off.  Worth a try if you've got shoulder problems and don't code (and poor hearing and medium size hands).

Oh, and it should be wireless.

the datahands are definitely the focus of my envious drooling, though I always wondered how easy it would be to adjust to one in actual use.

Curious about why aren't you using it? :( (I do remember searching for information a few times on the datahand in the last year or so and always remember seeing your name come up on DT)

Title: Re: Post your ergo keyboard(All ergo Keyboard)
Post by: hoggy on Thu, 25 July 2013, 00:30:36
The datahand is a fantastic thing to type on, but it takes a good long time to adapt to. I've gotten close to using it at work a few times, but usually some deadline looms...
The problem with programming is sheer quantity of punctuation, if I didn't code, then it would be much easier.
If I could get to 20 words a minute including the symbols then it would be possible. I just need to practice for at least a month.

Hang on. I think you have something. Why aren't I using it?

I've only typed on that one freestyle, and the rubber domes feel worn out. I've tried several goldtouches and they all feel pretty good. I'd say the freestyle has the best form factor (ergonomic shape) but the gold touch is nicer to type on.

How is the Type Matrix?  I was always interested in the matrix layout.

You have to give up other keyboards for a while.

I like matrix keyboards, you get used to them rather quickly.

The typematrix has a few issues - it's non-standard layout (specifically the central position of backspace etc) means you need to spend a good deal of time with just that one keyboard - no swapping until you've settled down, and ideally, not even then.  It's a fair enough issue considering it affects every keyboard that's a little different.  It's a good little board if you're planning on being faithful.

Sadly, you need to tell it to go into dvorak mode - it starts up in qwerty each time you restart your pc.

The 2020 isn't all that bad. I don't have a 2030,but the two halves look too close for my liking. In fact the 2030 doesn't have enough separation.
The scissor switches feel on the nice side.

The really noticeable part of the 2020, is the central keys, they'll take a lot of getting used to. The idea is good though.

It is, because it's just a thumbnail—ufraw keeps crashing on me these days.

The 2020 is a a piece of crap. Seriously. It looks cheap, feels cheap, and using two scissor switches per key instead of stabilizers is one of the worst ideas ever. Sure, bigger hand separation and an extra pair of keys in the middle could be nice, but we have ergodox for that, and it adds a lot to its size, making it less portable. The great thing about TM 2030 is that it's extremely portable.

Zinc doesn't rust. It's relatively corrosion resistant.

The difference is obvious, columnar layout should be better because fingers have different length. However, everyone is different, thus it's kinda difficult to find the ideal staggering. Moreover, the typematrix isn't fully split, that makes a difference as well, of course.

I don't have an opinion on the ergodox yet, that isn't sort of general.

New 'Dox with Blues and white PCB (via Mechanical Keyboards). I might not even put the aluminum plates on it when they arrive:

I think I need to put the stabilizers on this one. The heavier spring in the Clears doesn't need it, but on these blues you really gotta hit the thumb buttons dead on or they stick.

It's a yogitype.  Sadly it's rubber dome.

You rest your arms on the two rests, with the wrists facing each other. The keys are facing away from you on the back of the uprights.  I've only had chance to try it out for a few minutes so far.  I'm guessing it'll take a few hours (at least) to get used to it. When you press a key, a corresponding led on the front lights up.

just playing with the idea. It looks rather nice. But the next thing I'll probably get is something ortholinear. I find that staggered layout works better with lower profile and lighter switches. For example, right now I'm typing on a $12 rubber dome with flat keys, and I find it less tiring than typing on my stock mx clears. I really want a Topre though, don't know what I would make of the layout :/

Wow, that's crazy. When I saw the letters on the inside, I thought you somehow had to type with your palms facing outwards! Looks interesting for sure, but I don't think I'd enjoy typing on it.

I use a Truly Ergonomic with MX browns at work. I like the physical layout but find the layout remapping pretty limited (you can only have a single function layer, I like to have extra layers by holding down thumbkeys to do different things - this might not matter to you). Also I've had quite a lot of problems with key chatter and the different firmwares that were supposed to fix it didn't help much. Some days like today it's fine, then others I feel like an absolute idiot for spending so much on a keyboard that is hardly able to perform its one single function.

Have a look at this blog post about the Truly Ergonomic (http://blog.thecybershadow.net/2015/05/25/one-year-with-the-truly-ergonomic-keyboard/), I pretty much agree with all of this, and the comments at the bottom about key chatter. There was also a really hilarious post I found about it with the guy typing and not correcting the chatter in his post, I'll try to find it. edit: found it! (http://www.cataclysmicmutation.com/2014/03/28/truly-unresponsive/). Note that even though he said changing firmware almost fixed it for him, the latest firmware does not fix it completely on my board.

I use an Ergodox at home and I absolutely love it, especially now I have nice keycaps on it (DCS with GMK Carbon Modifers from Massdrop). If given the choice, I would definitely go with an Ergodox... The Ergodox was just a bit too weird and difficult to replace for me to take to work.

I could never go back to a staggered keyboard. Ortholinear FTW!

LOL that blog post is the best! I looked at the ergodox at the meetup in the UK, but it seemed like the thumb keys are all too far for comfortable typing. I have rather small hands. And then when I wanted to go Atreus I was worried that it's not mobile as I thought it was, because you have to position yourself properly to use it. Which brings me to the Planck. I like the Diverge TM 2, but I heard of quality issues, and it's also not soldered, and plastic as well. But I really like that it has two 2u keys. Planck is going to be expensive though, but if I go planck I could go Alps too... ERGH. What's not helping is my fascination of Topre.

Oh. I find the thumb keys on the ergodox to be in the perfect spot for my hands.  ;D

The Atreus is nice but has too few keys for me, I need Ctrl, Alt and Shift on the outsides. I'd find it very irritating to have to use modifiers that aren't in the "correct" location.

I've never got into Topre or Alps because it's difficult to find keycaps, especially in odd ergo layouts. The worst part about the Ergodox is finding keycaps, with all those 1.5u ones and vertical 2u's, although I'm super happy with the GMK Carbon modifiers I got from Massdrop.

I don't usually care how expensive the keyboard I'm getting is because as a $/hr rate, it's nothing... It's just when you have too many sitting around unused that it gets a bit silly, plus the girlfriend starts to nag.  ;)

Good luck.

Thanks man. I think planck is probably the way to go for me.

Man! I'm an Ergo fan (with limited selection). The keyboards posted here are absolutely awesome! Really like some of the more esoteric models. My first ergo keyboard was a crappy model with rubber domes, but with a track ball under the thumb. That was a very nice keyboard. Unfortunately not as nice as the Maltron. That would've lasted me a long time, I guess. Since then I mastered VIM and added vimfx/vimium to my browser(s) to ensure that I can operate with the keyboard as much as possible. That in combination with my new love, the Kinesis Advantage, I'm pretty happy for now.

That is beautiful. What are the panels, either perforated or with black dots on, at the extreme left and right?

I have been interested in ergo keyboards, but never found anything that has worked good for me.Although, I think I have improved in "touch typping" / "right hand position".

I have used two ergo boards. Tried an X-bows,

Unfortunately the layout on this one did not work at all! The Esc key is too far away (I'm a Vim user), and the other keys commonly used in programming is too far away. Maybe the layout is better for ANSI, I don't know.

Then I tried this keyboard at work a couple of years ago,

The keyboard in itself was quite bad, but the layout was okay! I quite liked the split typing experience, it made my typing better. So even if people don't use it for ergonomics, it will help you improve your typing.

Hehe, looks nice though! How is it to type on?
