Title: an introduction
Post by: BunnyLake on Sun, 05 April 2015, 08:59:12
after keeping this a secret for a long time, i am very proud to introduce a new product to you guys we will be releasing soon

[CTRL]ALT has been working very closely in collaboration with JTKeycaps to produce an alternative to the current keycap manufacturers, looking to match both the quality and flexibility of others in the marketplace

these are just a few teaser shots for now, and i will be showing more over the coming days

these are currently double shot abs in cherry profile and thickness as well as the capability to include custom legends

we wont be revealing the price just yet, but it will be considerably cheaper than other alternatives on the market

slowly over the coming weeks i will release info on the initial colorways we will offer

When you say custom legends, do you mean the ability to do one offs like WASD, or something still needing a high MOQ?

I use to REALLY HATE 60% keyboards because they don't offer any ability to fully customize them with custom legends so some keys are simply covered with excess GMK's or SP key-sets.

Now it looks like it's going to be 60% hording on my side of the planet.  Looking forward to seeing a full set showing these custom legends showing original operability of the Poker or V60 setup (at least that's my understanding of Bunny's new key-set line for small keyboard lay outs).

sets arent 60% sir, thats just the boards i run, full set includes winkey and winkeyless support, numpad and extras for compatibility with most boards, the initial runs wont have 1800 support but that will follow shortly when some of the initial investment is made back to invest in more tooling

Okay, my mistake.....Sorry.

You've included photos of individual keys thus far, can you please take a picture showing it's rear end because that's the foundation upon what we here on Geekhack love to see  8) ?

Hope your keys match the thickness of GMK's then we might have a definite take over of future Group Buys when it comes to custom keys.

Title: Re: an introduction

I'm very excited about this.

Bunnylake, just out of personal interest, with GMK supposedly entering direct to consumer keycap sales with their Uniqey board, do you think they will be more reluctant to do Group Buys?

Also, what do you plan to do with this new manufacturing capabilities if I may ask? Are you thinking retail or GBs or both? Is this move to do with the pricing and availability of GMK keycaps and making high quality thick ABS move available to the community or is it to do more with custom legends and manufacturing keycaps that GMK don't offer?

I know these are a lot of questions but I'm keen to learn more about this exciting new development

I just want somewhere that will do custom legends, and not be hit or miss on the QC, and even doing them in the first place.

sets arent 60% sir, thats just the boards i run, full set includes winkey and winkeyless support, numpad and extras for compatibility with most boards, the initial runs wont have 1800 support but that will follow shortly when some of the initial investment is made back to invest in more tooling

Okay, my mistake.....Sorry.

You've included photos of individual keys thus far, can you please take a picture showing it's rear end because that's the foundation upon what we here on Geekhack love to see  8) ?

Hope your keys match the thickness of GMK's then we might have a definite take over of future Group Buys when it comes to custom keys.

are they able to do the printing on Double shot keys? (i dont know if thats the right term).. for example like alot of older sets have grey with black ds legends, and some like print screen also have in green printing on the front face 'sys rq' or something similar... is this also something they can do, and if so how flexable is that??

(i would love to do a hotline miami set, darker than normal miami but with red printed blood splatters on some of the keys..

I would be open to trying ABS double shot BS caps.  I would prefer dye subbed PBT with a rough texture like SP's PBT DSA caps.

Couple of quick questions now that I think about it.

* Spacebars - can the community fund molds for unusual space bar sizes and stem positions? Would love a FC660 compatible set, always wanted one of those boards but the spacebar is a deal breaker.
* Are the pictured legends Cherry? They look pretty damned close from what I can tell.
* Will the colors be a limited pool like GMK or is there a possibility for custom colors?

Super excited guys, these look like they could really shake things up.

- anything can happen with the right amount of money sir
- the set is largely cherry, with a few slight alterations and extras not normally available
- any colours are possible, however this will be launching with some rpe set colours shortly, but after that community driven custom colour set gbs will be available with incredibly short lead times compared to what you are used to

The FC660 has a 6U spacebar, right? That's what the Infinity Hacker uses as well. These two groups need to team up for add-on kits in group buys to come.

A single add-on kit with a 6U spacebar, both oddball rshift sizes, and all the spare 1U keys for the Leo's top right corner and the Infinity's bottom right modifiers. We can call it the Underdog 60% Adapter Kit.

The FC660M has an standard size 6.25u space bar, but its stems / stabs are oddly spaced. The best way to go with it is to desolder the switches, and take the plate to shop to get  notches for the stabilizers at the standard positions being laser cutted. The, you will have a pretty much standard layout, but the 2.25u right shift, and the 1u fourth row windows key; that, could use any standard size space bar. I think, the problem is this design decision Leopold made.

The, you will have a pretty much standard layout, but the 2.25u right shift, and the 1u fourth row windows key; that, could use any standard size space bar. I think, the problem is this design decision Leopold made.
It seems like it would be an easy mistake to correct, though. Just change the design for future boards. That is, if Leopold pays enough attention to the modding community to notice it's a common issue.

We can call it the Underdog 60% Adapter Kit.

or the "people who make poor and uninformed purchases kit"

So in case anyone's interested, I looked into this. The Leopold has a 6.25U spacebar, not a 6U. It's just got oddball mount and stab spacing.

I think it was a conscious decision, it is not the only board with a strange spaced stems at the space bar.

The board has been out for around 2 years, so I doubt it will be getting changed. Leopold seems to like it the way it is now.

I realize that this is still a ways off, and topre caps are just a dream at this point, but it made me think about how a topre keycap GB would work. Would there be 3 different variants for RF, HHKB, and FC600C? The Leopold with 55g domes and doubleshots would be my dream come true.

AFAIK they all use the same alphas,  I'm not sure about the mods. The FC600C does have a unique bottom row though.

Pretty sure it'd just be a mega pack including the necessary mods for all those keyboards. It's like 3 extra keys for HHKB and 7 for the FC660C. Unlike MX, there are few enough Topre layouts that it's reasonable to include everything.

If run by [CTRL]ALT and following the previous pattern, the sale will be on their site, and announced in a thread here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=143.0).

nope

but for that you just need to do a little modding work yourself which is pretty easy

If everything but the spacebar will work out of the box then that is completely fine.
Most topre boards use 6u spacebars anyway so even using a donor Novatouch wouldn't let you convert the spacebar.
Situation? Good.

I don't understand the stabilizers part. You need Novatouch stabilizers to make a proper Topre to MX mod, or just can't put MX caps on Shift, Enter, etc, don't you?

Well, it's not stabilized as in the Novatouch with a stem on each side, but the slider is still different than 1u sliders.

Also, I'm not really sure that MX caps are designed to be as stable as Topre caps on a single mount.

Well the windows key are still doubleshot just that they are doing a clear shot.
You would need triple shot to have legends unless you did pad printing.

Yes, that's what I meant. Now that I think about it, it makes sense that windowed keycaps need a third shot unless you pad print it.  I guess it's pretty obvious but the thought never occurred to me, could also be this cold I've recently gotten.

Seconded,  I like my keyboards to be free of Caps Lock funk, as I map Caps Lock to Control *and* Control to Control.

Bonus points for keys to replace the Windows and Menu keys with anything else:  Plain Purple, Plain White, White Stars, Anchors, Icebergs -- this is the Unshine-able Titanic set right?, Meta, Super, Hyper, MacOS Spirography looking Command Icon (ala Toxic mods) or any UNIXy icons -- Gentoo works nice for purple colorways.

Any chance of Iconics for the mod keys, Left arrow for Backspace, right arrow for Delete, Caret for Control, Diamond for Super, Split Pathway for Alt and so on.

Bunny, you did say there was a mod pack in the works, right?

answered above but not this time, but itll be coming later

its a huge amount of money to start up something like this and buy all the tooling, so with each new set, improvements and additions can be made

i'll probably buy one of the first sets just to support the effort (very nice job with the quality and the pricing), but i agree in that some mx-to-topre compatible spacebars would be a real plus for the future. you'd be able to enter your own market space there as well, as now the only accessible replacement option is the black spacebar. every other color currently requires the purchase of an additional set/keyboard once the spacebar starts to develop shine, which is a real terrible position to be put in for topre owners.

i am curious though, do you know if topre/cm has a patent on the mx-style slider? i didn't see anything on the usa patent page, but with ya'll pricing the sliders so aggressively, you're actually likely to hurt cm's novatouch business. and i know they paid for a part of the tooling at topre's plant for them, so with all that money invested they'd be very likely to protect their patent, should they hold one.

getting close

jsut adding the description on the site

i have the gb thread ready

will be any time now

also to note

we have a bit of an issue with the validation settings on the site for the spacebars, so they are gonna be 50 cents more than i mentioned above for a 2 pack, because the site is auto rounding the prices up, and we dont have time to fix it prior to the buy going live

$53 or $68 with mx compatible topre pom sliders
(http://i.imgur.com/8uELs19.png)

JT Keycaps is completely new, and these are the debut sets, as with anything new, it needs a starting point, we have put a huge amount of time in to testing these, but they will only get better over time, however please be aware, as this is the first large scale production run, there can be some slight errors, or things we may change at a later date, but every cap will have very strict quality control

here are some pictures of the actual caps offered in both sets

i will post a lot more pictures in this post shortly once i have time to get things set up here

additionally, the first order will get a [CTRL]ALT tshirt

the first 100 orders will also get one of these

this gb will be open for 4 weeks from today, once the gb is complete, the turnaround time will be fairly short compared to a normal gb, approximately 3-4 weeks, for future buys, this time will get much shorter, however as this is the first one, itll have very strict QC and a bit of a learning curve that will be streamlined later

shipping will be

$7.50 US
$18 international

if you would like to make a large order, please contact me before ordering via the site

please keep this thread on topic, and if you have any queries please feel free to pm me

you can place your order here:

https://ctrlalt.io/buys/jtk-debut

payments are taken via stripe (debit or credit card)

if you are unable to pay via stripe, please place an order on the site, leave the order as unpaid, and either pm me or use the contact form on the site, giving me the order number and a paypal email (please note, if you pay via paypal, additional paypal fees will be added)

i dont know that it is now, we chose to include them with the kits for now, as a nod to people supporting the keysets (the reason for the sliders existing at all is to give topre users a chance to enjoy these keys)

so im not sure if we will add them separately just yet, but may do

No worries!  I'd probably grab 2-3 sets for future topre boards if they were made avaiable.  I just placed my order =]

Topre sliders would change my life. I can't even use these caps given my HHKB, but I am considering $68 that I don't have just for the sliders.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Maybe you could find someone who wanted only the keycaps and split an order?
