[IC] Crane - Top & Oring mount 60%
« on: Sun, 15 May 2022, 16:41:20 »

After 2 rounds of prototype and 3 units later, Crane is finally ready for an IC. The Crane is designed to be a slim dual mount 60% with a soft and consistent typing experience.

Specifications

Typing angle: 6 degree

Weight: Internal brass weight, directly covering the alphas

Case material and top option: 6063 and WK only

Case colours: Black, Silver

Plate layouts: Fixed ANSI, Fixed ISO

Plate materials: Red Aluminium (5052), Frosted Polycarbonate

Mounting styles: 4-point Top Mount, Gummy Oring

740g unbuilt, 1kg built

Target price: ~$300 no more than $350

More
the target price is higher than I would like, but I have to be realistic with myself. Given the current situation, the size of the hobby and this being my first project; I am not confident that I can hit that higher MOQ to achieve that price.

Adjusted front height: ~17.5mm-17.94mm without feet, ~19mm - 19.5mm with feet

The 4-point top mount provides a slightly softer typing feel while still being consistent. The mounting tabs are close to the edge of the plate to provide support so the mods don't flex away from the edge.

Top mount                                                                                            Oring mount

Standard USB port.

Alessio did a build stream last month, check it out Here!

Thank you for reading. If you are interested please fill in the IC form, it would help me tremendously.

Special thanks to

Simon, Paul, Alessio, KK and Huey

To-do:
1st round of prototyping
2nd round of prototyping
Collect feedback - In process
Proto PCB - Pending :stocks:
Send silver unit to Huey to build - Pending
Finalise details with vendors

MISC

More
Due to the low front height and 6 degree angle, the maximum weight thickness I can achieve is 2mm. It is placed directly under the alphas and I feel that it has really helped with the sound.

There is a spacebar cutout in the bottom case for screw-in stabilizers so you are not limited to using clip-ins only. Please use clip-ins for backspace otherwise the oring would be pinched against the case wall and the plate.

If, for whatever reason, you like shaking keyboards; depending on what stabs are used you could potentially feel the build move slightly in the case. This has no effect on the assembly of the case or the actual functionality of the keyboard.

Back part looks dull but the inner weight looks remarkably good. Mixed priorities.

looks nice. wouldn't it be better to move the weight screws a bit or add two more? i often see designers having problems with thin weights being bent/warped out of the factory

I would think that it is really just for sound, as alessio stated this is a board to just sound and feel good.

You're always toxic asf for some odd reason. Also, if you had any knowledge of anything at all, you'd know that daughterboards are not automatically superior, especially because many of them result in worse sound profiles or at least more inconsistent sound profiles in the region they're located. Maybe learn something about the hobby before putting out your garbage takes

chat and team, I appreciate your input dude, but you're always so ****ing negative man. Honestly man, this is the one thing i ****ing hate about geekhack some times, because you always have this one guy that just needs to be super ****ing negative all the time when you reply. I appreciate your input man but like my god, I never see positive stuff come from you. It's always just like bashing people, making fun of things. Even in other IC's too. It's just so ****ing tiring bro, like it honestly is dude. I understand you don't want the product and stuff like that but you don't need to be so god damn ****ing negative man. Like it really is ****ing tiring to read. ****. It's so boring to read the same **** over and over and over again from the same people. You don't like anything, cool! Find a new hobby maybe. ****.

jokes aside, cool ic. glwgb homie

A DB doesnt make a board good, clearly this isnt a board meant for flex and for 300 this is honestly not terrible, a bit basic but not bad

I dont mind it but i would love to see maybe some like a unique touch how for example the kikkuichimonji has a led thing, Doesnt need to be the same but something what makes this board different then any other top mount 60 would be great, For the rest i cant really comment, looks dank, GLWIC  :thumb:

lol this guy.

I tried to make the keyboard sound as consistent as possible and a db would not give me that. If I were to add a db, I could cover up the JST channel with the weight but I would have no way of covering up the space for the db. This would make that area sound different compared to the rest.

I am not going to turn it into a box ticking exercise just to have something on paper when it doesn't give me the result that I want. If I were to add it I would have to redesign the bottom case and make the db mounted on the bottom side, but this is not what this keyboard is about.

Yes, the target price is higher than I would like, but I have to be realistic with myself. Given the current situation, the size of the hobby and this being my first project; I am not confident that I can hit that higher MOQ to achieve that price.

this looks really awesome! nice design, tried and true mounting and love the standard 60% pcb compatibility. honestly for a case i'd rather have standard pcb compat than a daughterboard anyways
