Breaking Bad keycaps
« on: Wed, 26 September 2012, 04:21:01 »
Hi guys,
here is my first post,
I've been lurking around a lot these days, geekhack being part of my daily routine :)
I came to mechanical keyboards when I started Starcraft 2 and I slowly but surely became a keyboard enthousiast!
I own a noppoo choc mini with browns and some custom keycaps (a double shot GH red one white escape keycap and a 37 set of blank keys).
While reading about breaking bad on wikipedia, I thought that the "Br Ba" logo would make great keycaps.
I'm no group buy expert so I don't feel like organizing the whole thing but maybe it could be part of another group buy if people show interest in this idea.
I'll be glad to help this happening  :D
I'm noob here so sorry if this post is in not in the appropriate section

Cheers!

(btw I'm the french version of the Batmann so excuse my english, it sometimes slips!)

Welcome to Geekhack!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Breaking bad is by far the best drama series on television in my opinion. If this group buy ever went down I would be on board. It would be cool if the caps came as a 6 piece set one "Br" one "Ba" with transparent "blue meth" colored WASD keys. I think I just got a semi.

It certainly is.  I'm now totally liking Walter White, greatest respect for that man and he gets even better as time goes on.

If I was a Chem Teacher at school, I would definitely be doing the same as him.  So when and if anyone starts this awesome Group Buy COUNT ME IN.

blue meth WASD add on is a pretty good idea.
I think that keycap set would be sick.
Is there any "official" method to produce an overview (I got decent skills with any adobe soft, illustrator, photoshp, indesign...)?

And also do we really have to fill in the verification field any time or is it some kind of hazing that new comers have to go through?! :rolleyes:ß

The verification will disappear after a few more posts.

I believe SVG is the standard format for designs.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

I'd rather have 3 good seasons and have them end it while it's still good than have them drag it out to 3 good seasons and 4 bad ones.

Relatedly, a periodic table set of some kind would be cool too.

That is a lot of answers, this looks like a very good start  :D
You guys are keycaps junkies and I'm afraid I'm on the verge of becoming one as well!
Boost "hide your wallet" answer on my presentation thread will start to make sense soon I guess
Anyway, I measured a cherry keycap and carried the proportion in my illustrator project so I suppose this will do.
I'm not yet familiar with the different process involved in keycaps production,
according to you guys, what is the more appropriate for this set: double shot, dyesub...something else?
the "Br Ba" keycaps are pretty simple: white prints on a green background (although I'm not sure wether we can keep the slight color gradient on the green...you tell me)
the WASD are more complex if we want to achieve an ice cube effect which would litteraly kill! Illustrator is a beast at creating such thing but do you think the printing/injecting/... technologies will allow to produce such keycaps or do we have to stick with clear caps slightly coloured with light blue?

I'd get these, but only if all the other elements are made. Sweet, idea' right?

Anyway, it'd look perfect as PBT Dyesubb'd onto white keycaps. I don't think keeping that gradient will work out, but a nice green on white'd look great!

I don't think it will end completely, simply because of the huge cult following it has.  I never got excited about TV before until this show aired.  Even though I now watch it only through the Net, by downloading all the episodes. I think this is the FIRST drama that has you loving the evil perpetrators more than anything else.

I think that is why Dexter has become so loved as time went by because you can imagine doing the same things as him, given the exact same circumstances.

For me Breaking Bad is the absolute BEST that can be done on a shoe string budget because of having FIRST class writers employed.  This is where Hollywood should go now, write about real things that happen to ordinary people.  Plus crime is far more interesting than any other genre.

I would be interested in a set or two. I stopped watching the show after season 1 years ago; but after my Literature professor used it as an example of how a well done story/cast can pull you in as we were discussing epic poetry, I knew that I needed to check out season 2.

But why would you want to, if they can be done as PBT?

Profile will likely be determined, but I imagine F# row is best. (another option is to replace keys in the typing area, but since the first letter of "Both" is "b", it doesn't make as much sense here.)

even if it were only a few blue meth colored keys on either side of the Br and Ba keys ,,, eg. F1=Blue Meth, F2=Br, F3=Ba, F4=Blue Meth.  That way the WASD keys wouldn't be so far away from the meth keys and your down to a 4pc set for cost.

Well I had a little spare time to make some teaser to try and turn you on.
I did some research on possible ways to make this happen on my own but to be honest I don't believe this is the safest way to carry this on.
So I hope some group buy expert will come across this thread and get interested enough to either join this to an existing gb or even create one.
I keep all the material I made for this project available to anyone willing to take care of this (this was done with Illustrator).
Now fingers crossed, hope this gonna work  :D

Clack Factory makes some awesome clear keys that kind of look like the blue meth. I doubt we could get enough for a large group buy though, and that would still leave the Br and Ba keys needed from somewhere else. The green that QWERKeys has might be pretty close.

Start an Interest Check thread first in the Group Buy section.  After that, contact an appropriate vendor/manufacturer (ie. QWERKeys, imsto, SP, etc).  Good luck with the group buy and I'm in for a set. lol

I'd likely be in as well, but it seems like everyone is saying in...no one taking action?

It seems like we need someone to guide us lol. I certainly have no clue how to start up a group buy

Anyone who starts an Interest Check for some key caps will always get this guy in your group buy.  You already start with 2 people no matter what.

To be honest I don't really feel comfortable taking the reigns on this, I think there's a lot of people that could do it better and/or have more experience than I do (seeing as I don't have any, lol).

In other group buys, any idea of roughly how many people need to show interest for it to get the green light? Like what's usually the minimum order amount for custom keys etc.

Typically 50 or more before a good price is reached.  I bet i3oilermaker would be interested in running it.  He's good at doing the art, as well.

50 keys or 50 sets of keys? If sets, how many keys need to be in a set, or does it not matter?

Definitely get him to do it.  Only if he has free time and if he's genuinely interested in running it.  Just don't want to put the hard word on him, but he has been quite successful in running Group Buys in the past and there has been no complaints whatsoever.

If you want a Group Buy that is totally honest, seamless and punctual then he is the hombre (or the W.W. of Key-caps).

50 of whatever you're ordering, in this case I assume that means a 2-key set.

Thanks for the manufacturer's links, that's what I was badly missing (plus QWERKeys is in Europe, making things easier for me regarding customs and shipping, I'll also check with SP though)
I'll then give it a try  :D
I need to figure out prices and details (double shot, pbt, clear caps choice, shipping costs...) and I'll keep you posted with the interest check.

PS: how do you add images in a post, I tried HTML tags with a file hosted on my dropbox but didn't work. thx

If you click reply (instead of just writing a quick-reply) you can hit the image button to give you the image tags

Maybe you don't have enough posts, I'm not sure how that works. But it's just simple forum image tags, [.img]http://Link Goes Here[./img] Without the periods

I'm going to start an interest check for these keycaps, using Batmann's concept art (if he doesn't mind, that is).  I feel we should try to get this off the ground ASAP.

I said I would keep you posted with the interest check. I'm surprised you set it off on your own...
I  already contacted qwerkeys and SP to get all the details for the interest check.
