I think I saw a George Carlin reference somewhere just a bit ago, so I thought I would add this. I like what Carlin said about voting. It went something like this iirc-

"You can't complain if you vote, some people get that wrong, saying you have the right to complain if you vote. That doesn't make sense. How can you complain if you elect dishonest, pathetic, etc., politicians? I, not having left my home on election day am not responsible for this mess and therefore can complain."

I'm sure I butchered it, but you get the gist. With his wording and mannerisms it was classic. It's been stuck in my head since I first heard it like 10+ years ago.

moving on...

America Fvck Yeah!

I remember a different Carlin skit about voting. He said he stays home on election day because "this country was bought, sold and paid for long before I got here."

I like that, but I will vote anyway.

Edit: to xsphat-
I remember that one too. He had tons of stuff about politics and elections. I love his delivery (literary and performance). Though most of what I remember of his is from what I read, seems to stick to the grey goo better that way.

Carlin is great, well, he was great (he died, right?) Nearly everything he says is a logical fallacy, but the delivery and content was so good.

How funny that both of those lines were consecutive in a particular skit! That's great, just as I would imagine it to be.

But... see... this is one of those, "no offense, but... I'm going to say something offensive anyway" statements. You can't, by definition, be proud of something, unless you believe that it is better than something else.

That is not what proud means.  It's not exclusive.  It's like the word love.  If you say that you love your mother, does that mean you must by definition love your father less?

Now I agree that many people who _do_ see America in a simplistically positive light do use the phrase "proud American" as shorthand for that kind of sentiment (which, again, I would count as a cultural problem that America has).  But it's not strictly what the phrase means, as I have been trying to point out.  Patriotism is not the same as fanaticism.

Quote
And, you think implying that one country is better than another country is not bad? But what happened to all those things you said about anti-American sentiment? So you can say America is better than one country, but someone can't say anything bad about America? There's a contradiction there.

I didn't say America is better than any other country.  I said I am proud of American achievements, and that I am proud to be an American.  I explicitly said that by saying those things, I do not mean that America is better than other countries.

I do believe that making judgments and comparisons between countries is not an inherently bad thing.  It can be taken to negative extremes, but making judgments is a necessary part of life.  It can't be avoided.  The best you can do is try to be honest and fair with yourself and others in making them.

I don't have anything against anti-American sentiment per se.  Only the vitriolic and mindless kind that you often read on the Internet.  It's not the anti-American aspect that I'm against.  It's the mindlessness and vitriol.

Yeah, he passed away a few years back.
Delivery > logic = always

I actually believe this is how many an itelligently shy person gets their daily dupe. Political or otherwise.

Nothing beats a good delivery. Whether it be verbal, pizza, or sex.

Edit: Fvck YEAH! Phew... I was almost off topic there for a second.

I guess this is where we will have to agree to disagree. It's not possible to express patriotism without implying that that country is better than another. IMO, there is already a problem with saying, I'm "proud" to be (of some country).

I never understood what people mean when they say they are "proud" of anything that does not relate to personal achievement. Pride in country, race, religion, gender, sexual affiliation, ancestors, etc. all seems rather meaningless. By extension, why not simply say "proud to be human"? But then all we are doing is passively identifying with the achievements of others and projecting their greatness onto ourselves. It all seems like a rather lazy way of feeling better about who we are.

RIP George.

you have the power four,

louie ck (his fx series is ok, his standup and interviews are better)
chris rock (his movies suck, his tv show was, bleh, but his stand up is great)
ricky gervais (a funny brit, great standup)
seinfeld (i guess we need an american white guy, btw louie is half mexican so he can't count)

Simmer, I'm not gonna turn racist for you. And really, when was the last time you actually got offended by something someone said that was prefaced with "no offence, but"? I don't think I ever have.

Yeah, I know. I just dislike stuff like that because I've heard it so much. Like, "No pun intended really means "Hey look, I'm about to be clever!" They drill that crap in you in college for creative writing because when people watching you can pick apart a person in about three minutes by silently studying what they say.
