So what do I need to get a working numpad?

Just the case, the PCB and some switches or are there other components I need to source?

By the way, I don't think it's neccessary to post the PayPal address in the comments. This could be done via PM!

looks like you'll need stabs as well.

More information about this is needed (layouts? programmability? plate? stab type?) before I am interested.

will race case fit other 75%?

also it may be against the rules to put paypal emails in the replies

A picture of the PCB and plate would definitely generate more interest I think!

No. The USB port position is different, if you are thinking about mx-mini.

was thinking maybe kc84

also its possible to change the location of the usb port on the mini, but im not sure if its the same position as race

! how much for the RACE case, I've been wanting a tray for my RACE like forever. this seems like a really cool combo with the numpad.

also paypal address should be private information.

Are you talking about a stock Poker case?

I'm trying to find a aluminum Poker case like the one that imsto was selling a while back (or something similar) that isn't low profile.

Just wanted to check since you mentioned that you could get Race cases.

I am also interested in the 75% case if it can fit Keycool 84
Title: Re: [GB]AboStudio Number Pad
Post by: Glod on Fri, 27 June 2014, 00:51:15
It is clearly only made for the RACE, it has the race PCB mounts and USB port. The keycool is held by a plate while the race is PCB only and mounts direct on the PCB. I don't think the keycool would ever work with a tray.

The numpad likely doesn't use a plate like a race

It looks like the goal was to have a race \ numpad combo as they share the same dimensions

-----

I will probably join this but I'm going to myself time to think about it.

If I were to be in, it'd be for PCB-only ... and I'm still on the fence, sorta like GLOD, above.

Shipping costs? Not exorbitant I hope, as you're in the states, too ...

Wow.... tough choice between buying this now or waiting for the butterfly pad to be released.

Only way to get the full numpad is to buy the pcb and case from here and DIY right? Where do I get the other parts from like the controller, diodes and resistors etc? Will they be included? Cause switches, stabs, LEDs and keycaps are fine by me. Just the other parts of the PCB

huh? i have a few PCB mount boards, you can very easily take off keycaps and you can service switches even easier than a plate with the notches cut out
 and with the aluminum case it really wont need it because it will still be very solid. backlighting will actually be better

here is my race for example

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5514/9188495558_b68c613592.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/eZXrBd)

veryone makes plateless out to be this horrible thing, probably because they have only tried it where the case the PCB is in was very flexible like a G80-1800 or G80-1190,

I don't think so. Was you take out your switchs from keyboard by Keypuller when you change your keycap sets ?

Anyway, if we add plate, it's more better and more solid but not good feeling type than plateless .....

what the heck are you talking about! And i am not talking about the translation,

have you ever owned a pcb mount board? do you think the switch just comes off if you use a key cap puller? it does not, it is very stable,  The difference is more in the sound of the keyboard switch than the actual feel.

Cherry Corp pretty much is all pcb mount on their G80s and they seem to work out just fine for decades.

Seriously, for a PCB this small, the typing feeling doesn't change at all whether it's plateless or not.

... using plate ...
will mean increased difficulty to change switches and change layout if you intended to do so, for what would be a subtle increase in strength and rigidity for this size of number pad. Especially if the PCB is well supported.

Speaking of which, the internal shots of the case show a slight step on the inside edge of the walls of the case. Do these provide support to the edges of the PCB?

It looks like the PCB was designed so you could break off the bottom row and have a functional 5x4 numpad.  Not sure how easy/safe it is to cut up a PCB, but a 5x4 would be great for people looking to compliment their 60% boards.

I just read all 23 pages of that thread.  For anyone interested, it looks one successful method is to score the line along the bottom row repeatedly on both sides of the PCB and then break it off by hand.  I will be trying this with one of the two PCBs I ordered.

Can race case fit mx mini replica? http://deskthority.net/group-buys-f50/face-u-and-mx-mini-u-replica-acrylic-plate-and-acrylic-case-t8311.html
Title: Re: [GB]AboStudio Number Pad 8/2 deadline
Post by: Glod on Thu, 03 July 2014, 22:46:55
thats a good question, but after looking at pictures on the almighty internet (dangwang blog), the mx mini as it was sold relied on mounting to the case via the plate it uses. it did look to have pcb mounted stabs though

the race attaches to the tray from the PCB itself, there is actual proper mounting holes for the tray on the PCB because the RACE doesnt have a plate. If you are familiar with the way the poker or pure attaches to a tray that is the same with the RACE

now if the replica has new mounting holes that match the race tray, as well as a different mounting location of the USB port then yes it would be compatible but i seriously it was the intention of the replica to make it work with a RACE tray.

I would like to change my order from 1 PCB to 2 PCBs.

Also, I would like to confirm that the PCBs will be coming as 4x6.  I see the case only supports 4x5, but I want the extra piece on the bottom to still be attached so it would be 4x6.

The case looks to be a 4x6 to me. If you look at the mounting points in the case they match the 4x6 mounting points on the PCB and not the 4x5 ones. I think the case that it is shown next to is the race case which is also 6 keys high.

For a traditional layout (with 2x Enter, +, and 0) you should get 3 "2.x PCB mount" stabilizers.

That said, the real answer is it depends on what you want to do.  The PCB supports 1x keys for every row/column, so if you want to use 1x keys for every slot you don't need any stabilizers at all.  And if decide you want to insert a custom made plate in there (not currently offered with this GB) you could also use plate mount stabilizers.

I used a dremel to cut off the bottom row of mine.  A quick multimeter test shows everything still works!

Also looking for instructions on programming...I guess since it's an ATmega32u4 I could figure out the matrix and modify TMK code, but I really don't want to, lol.

I was able to program the firmware.  I pulled ghpad firmware from regack's repository (https://github.com/regack/4x6/tree/GHpad) (found via a Google search) and followed the directions in various readmes.  Flashed using FLIP.  I haven't installed any LEDs, but I have a 4x5 number pad with the *usual* layout working now.

mine is already programmed, works perfectly fine but right now i'm trying to get flip to detect my numpad, since it's already pre-flashed it doesn't show up as "unknown usb device" or w/e and until i install the driver, FLIP won't let me do anything. :\

oops, i'm stupid. forgot to press the button on the back...

edit: yup, same thing as you. shows up in device manager, just doesn't function.

I think Mashby posted some pretty high res photos a couple of posts above yours here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59950.msg1462432#msg1462432).  Also I was able to use regack's firmware (based on TMK) to program the board, so I'm assuming the information here (https://github.com/regack/4x6/tree/GHpad) is applicable.

I know geniekid used a dremel to trim is PCB down to 4x5. I'm looking to do the same and I'm curious if that's the best way.

I've seen some PCBs where they appear to snap, but this one doesn't look like a candidate for that type of procedure.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Title: PCB-snapping
Post by: AKmalamute on Mon, 15 September 2014, 16:08:52
There's a string of tiny holes whose only purpose is, I assume to weaken the PCB in a perfectly straight line ... although someone in this thread commented on the recommended process, quoting the GHpad thread from afar into the past. Score repeated, I assume across the tiny holes, all the way to the other edge?

 Then carefully press the 'good' PCB to a countertop, and lean heavily on the 'bad' part. KerSNAP!

...oh, and I got mine today. Yay!
Title: Re: [Shipping] AboStudio Number Pad --- accept orders
Post by: geniekid on Mon, 15 September 2014, 16:55:15
I commented earlier about scoring it repeatedly, but I can't seem to find the post I was thinking about in the GHPad thread.  In fact, the last post I can find talking about the breakaway-ability of the thing is this (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=38963.msg1080699#msg1080699), where regack says you'll probably have to cut it.

Regardless, after getting the board I tried to score it repeatedly with an exacto-knife and decided it would take way too long, which is when I turned to the dremel.  If you choose a similar path, be wary of fiberglass dust.

And final disclaimer - I'm a total noob at this stuff.  I would be very interested in hearing what others who have cut PCBs have done.

Flashed using FLIP.

Now, mine came preprogrammed but I wanted to reprogram it, so ... compiled a .hex file from the linked github page; took a bit of doing as the LUFA support wasn't there I had to copy it to a full-TMK copy but anyway it compiled and I think it's a working layout EXCEPT...

When I press the reset button, the TEENSY loader doesn't see it. Okay, use FLIP ... it "could not open device" either. I'm on my work computer, I'll grant you, but still ... Device Manager (windows 7 _x64) shows an HID input device, then when I push reset and either wait a long time or tell the device manager to look for hardware changes, it shows instead under other devices ATm32U4DFU. But FLIP doesn't agree ... I can't program it.

What am I missing here?

You did specify the chip that it's using in FLIP right?

Yes, and tried a few others just in case.

Based on what I'd followed in this thread (I'll look again) and device manager says its the 32u4, so ... that's what I'd pick, right?

EDIT: OP has some documents that are in chinese. Google translate definately says its the atmega32u4 ... as do the attached .bat files. But that DFU programmer says its not attached, either.

Okay I guess I'm double posting; turns out it was a I-have-never-used-FLIP problem. Installed the driver, now its happy.

Board does nothing.

 Did anybody look at their compiled .hex file? FLIP said what I made earlier today was 1 util-byte. KinRauns' supplied .rar has a hex with a great many more util-bytes. Flashing that restored as-shipped functionality.

 For those who have compiled their own from Regack's ... are you sure the .hex is alright? it's as large as the other .hex files you've worked with ...? Because mine isn't, and I know it didn't throw an error while compiling.

Got my number pads! od my golly, are they nice!.

The alum case has little dents here and there that would normally annoy me, but overall, they don't detract from the experience. Damn nice and heavy, and one of the most beautiful feet… feel great, and work well, its an awesome case.

Didn't think silver would look that nice, thought it would be boring, but in-fact its pretty good too, up there with the black.

My PCBs, well, two of the ones i tested briefly, appeared to be pre-programmed. I have not actually installed any yet as I don't have any switches, but with my tweezers as a conductor, the few things I connected appeared to send key codes to my mac.

At a superficial level, they appear to work.

Thanks Kinruan

fyi to program with regack's latest github repo(https://github.com/regack/4x6/tree/GHpad/firmware) I had to actually do this to get it to work

make Keymap=keymap_4x6std

flashing the hex that was created using make on it's own did not work.

edit: I do not want to triple post so here is an edit...

I built my hex with keymap_4x6full instead because I intended to use this in a full 4x6 matrix layout.
For some reason the keys that are supposed to be assigned @ col 4, row 3 (TAB) and col 4, row 5(BSLS or \) are not working?

Is anyone else trying to use all the keys and having issues?

Well now I'm worried...
Title: Re: [Shipping] AboStudio Number Pad --- finished
Post by: domoaligato on Fri, 03 October 2014, 19:14:45
well basically when I fully assembled the pcb and mounted it into the case and then start putting keycaps onto the switches I noticed that the inner walls of the case are rounded. this causes the keycaps to rub and stick in the corners of the case.
I contacted Glod because he received his case in the first batch of cases and I received mine in the second batch.
I wanted to determine if maybe my batch was bad or if they were all this way.
Glod also has the same issues with his after completing assembling his a few hours ago and he is trying to determine if resoldering the corner switches in just the perfect position will resolve this.
Lets just say that @ 2am PST last night I was a very very pissed off at the fact that I basically spent $100 USD on an aluminum paper weight.
Hopefully Glod comes up with something. His initial ideas about switch positioning makes me feel a little better though.

Post by: Glod on Fri, 03 October 2014, 22:39:20
sorry was away from computer

Yes, i assembled and found that you have to carefully position the PCB otherwise some keys will get stuck along the edge
the best position to do it with is to put the PCB the farthest up

even with that the bottom corners will RUB against the corners. For me its not as bad as domo and mine is completely usable but its still a bit annoying to have to rub like that. youll see in the pictures the corner is very round.

Forgot to mention I tried messing with the pcb soldering switch angle slightly. I found it impossible to do without leaving a substantial gap between the switch and the pcb

Again for me it's still  completely usable, the rubbing is so slight it's not adding enough resistance to really notice during normal use. But if domo is experiencing something unusable I find that a bit unacceptable.

to use dfu programmer you must first press the button on the back of the pcb. then install the driver that either comes in the driver folder or with flip.
then it will just work when you double click the batch file.

I have played with it for about the last hour. It still does not fit without rubbing.
I still have not hadde any issue with keycaps not fitting properly, maybe because i don't have any yet.

ok so i finally got around to programming this with my own hex file, i put ghpad under firmware into the recent tmk_keyboard_master

i added in a bootloader key so i dont have to take everything apart to program, i pulled this from when i programmed my phantom(s)

it looks like this

Code: [Select]
#include "keymap_common.h"

const uint8_t PROGMEM keymaps[][MATRIX_ROWS][MATRIX_COLS] = {
    KEYMAP(ESC, TAB, FN0, BSPC, \
           NUMLOCK,KP_SLASH,KP_ASTERISK,KP_MINUS, \
           KP_7,   KP_8,    KP_9,       KP_PLUS,  \
           KP_4,   KP_5,    KP_6,       KP_PLUS,       \
           KP_1,   KP_2,    KP_3,       KP_ENTER, \
           KP_0,   KP_0,    KP_DOT,     KP_ENTER), \

    KEYMAP(TRNS,   TRNS,   TRNS,   TRNS, \
           FN1,   TRNS,   TRNS,   TRNS, \
           TRNS,   UP,   TRNS,   TRNS, \
           LEFT,   DOWN,   RGHT,   TRNS, \
           TRNS,   TRNS,   TRNS,   TRNS, \
           INS,   INS,   DEL,  TRNS )
};

enum function_id {
    TEENSY_KEY,
};

const uint16_t PROGMEM fn_actions[] = {
        [0] = ACTION_LAYER_MOMENTARY(1),
        [1] = ACTION_FUNCTION(TEENSY_KEY)
};

void action_function(keyrecord_t *event, uint8_t id, uint8_t opt)
{
    if (id == TEENSY_KEY) {
        clear_keyboard();
        bootloader_jump();
    }
}

Now onto the next question. how the hell do you get the backlighting to work? i imagine there is a altered config.h, Makefile, and added backlight.h and backlight.c like the other tmk with backlighting has but it has been failed to be posted here

Forgot to mention I tried messing with the pcb soldering switch angle slightly. I found it impossible to do without leaving a substantial gap between the switch and the pcb

Again for me it's still  completely usable, the rubbing is so slight it's not adding enough resistance to really notice during normal use. But if domo is experiencing something unusable I find that a bit unacceptable.

thx for reporting this issue, gold and domoaligato, i asked and got the answer:
This problem is due to manufacturing error, the original design should have been perfect. The blue print has been redesigned and the distance is expended on future cases if there are any.
Some suggestions to the cases that are rubbing the cap:
1. leave  or not fully tighten the screws may help a little
2. grind the corner a little (he said that... i don't agree though.)
3. return for a new one that is redesigned and fixed. takes more time and shipping fee.

Mine works fine, pre-programmed. I'll let you guys know if I have any trouble modifying the layout.

Hey everyone,

I am looking at getting a couple of these cases for the pcbs I recieved.
http://h5.m.taobao.com/awp/core/detail.htm?spm=a1z10.3.w4002-4815093116.40.qowSNw&id=38746408917

Anyone have experience with them? Also thinking of running a small gb for them to bring shipping costs down. :)

anybody figure out the backlighting yet? like i said earlier im guessing there is some backlighting files for TMK but i really want to know, it is really lame to have it support backlighting, have the resistors soldered in, and not being able to use it.

kinruan please find out.

So, there are resistors but no LEDs, right? What value are the resistors -- it'll narrow down what color LEDs I could get for it.

As a side note, the fact that all the keyswitches mount upside down confused me. I popped a top off trying to change keycaps, shoved the top back on backwards, and had to replace the keyswitch as a result. feelsbadman.jpg but it all works now. Way cool!

Just need to know a bit more about backlighting, like Glod said.

The backlighting as I knew so far only 2 mode:
1. ON/OFF - 3 lvl of brightness
2. Breathing - 3 lvl of speed

What's the other led effects u guys got?

the question isnt the capability of the backlighting, the transistor on the PCB and pre-soldered resistors show the backlighting will be adjustable (this also can allow different colors if i am thinking correctly)

The question is how the hell you get it to work. regack used TMK as firmware and TMK supports backlighting but requires extra code that is not available from regack or anyone else i have seen as of yet. I am also guessing that it is possible that the red scarf pcb may use something other than TMK to get the backlighting to work.

both of my boards came not programmed, which is fine because i had a custom layout idea anyway. So i wasnt able to try out any pre-programmed backlighting.

That's weird, I never had a problem to get the backlighting work on my red scarf pcb.
I'm using TMK firmware too, but from kai instead of regack.

did anyone else have any luck with this? for me that matrix didn't work.
is this because there are a few different versions of the ghpad out there?

I have adapted the original tmk device port to the newest tmk commits as of a few days ago and I finally got it working.

btw thanks for everything kinruan. I sent him my case and he had it fixed and repowder coated.
You are awesome!

I forgot to mention that the case sold in this groupbuy uses the same size screws as a poker case. I had issues with the screws that were supplied with this case and the poker ones were higher quality.

well thsi groupbuy is long over and you could ask kinruan if he is going to do this again if you want aluminum.

you can also look around taobao

I only just got round to building this. I can't seem to figure out how to flash a new hex file.

While using dfu programer it says device not found
While using flip it says could not open usb device.

I've installed the drivers provided in the OP and pressed the reset button on the keypad.
Can't seem to figure out the problem. Any advice?
