[IC] PBTFans Salt Lakes | Text Modifiers changed to Icons!
« on: Tue, 14 December 2021, 21:40:13 »

UPDATE 14/10/2022

After a long hiatus, i've finally had time to give running this set another crack! Due to the backlog of sets running through ePBT, the set will now be run through PBTFans. There are numerous updates to the page and set in response to this, I hope you enjoy it :)

**NOTE**
Due to the significant majority of IC respondents requesting Icon modifiers, the set has been changed accordingly. Please refer to the updates tabs for more details on kitting changes

Inspired by the salt lakes found at Lake MacDonnell in South Australia, this is PBTFans Salt Lakes!

This sets intention is to translate the wonderful colours of these lakes onto your keyboard, how good is that!
To achieve this, the custom keycap set will be made in a Cherry-profiled PBT plastic through doubleshot molding.

Kitting

IC Form - **NEW** Please fill this out!

Colours - Updated

The green and pink Pantones represent the lakes within the inspiration picture at their most vibrant, while the orange/brown is the earth causeway that separates the two.
The white pantone then represents both the salt of the lakes and landscape which is concentrated within the area, and how the lakes become salt pans when there is particularly harsh drought in South Australia.

The green and white have been updated since the previous iteration of the IC page. This has been to add a subtle bit more creaminess to the alphas, and to match the blue-green of the renders better.

Note that the picture below only shows digital representations of the selected Pantones, and thus shouldn't be taken as the final expectation for the set.

Background

More
The Pink Lake appears as it does due to it's higher concentration of salt, allowing algae called dunaliella salina and bacteria called halobacteria to flourish. These algae and bacteria secrete carotenoid red pigments, the same found in orange and red fruit/vegetables, which gives the water its colour! The vibrancy of this colour is dependent on how diluted the salt content of the water is, as lower concentrations of salt in the lake inhibit the population size of the algae and bacteria, thus how much pigment can be produced.

The Green Lake doesn't take on this pink colour due to it's lower salt concentration as a product of larger water volume to the same amount of available salt. Therefore, it never achieves the pink of its neighbour. However, the somewhat green colour is due to chlorophyll-filled algae preferring in the lower salinity environment. Thus the intensity of the green can also fluctuate depending on the season and how favourable it is for these algae to grow!

Mind you, people notice the change in colour of the pink lake a lot more than the green lake because it's, well, pink... which leads to the fun fact about the inspiration image!
You may have noticed that the colours appear a bit saturated, which is a keen catch ;) . Funnily enough however, it is the land strip and the green lake that are arguably more vibrant than they appear in real life, not the pink lake! Go at the right time, and it indeed appears as in the image, which I was fortunate enough to have seen in person!

Novelties explained

More

The principle behind the novelties is to represent the three prevalent components of Lake MacDonnell; the salt, the land, and the water. I decided to be minimalistic with the designs out of preference as I thought they were cute, with the animal novelties in particular representing the prevalent animals surrounding the components at the Lake.

The critter has no justification, he's just cute ;)

All novelties designed were designed by myself.

Also wanted to say that epbt is halting all sets that dont have a settled gb date so you wont be able to run in feb-march, I talked with them for my set (ePBT Real) and they said the earliest I could run would be q3 2022 so I dont think it would be possible for this to run that early, but talk to bob I could be wrong

Oh true, I think I remember seeing this on your post. I'll keep the GB estimate as is for the moment as an aimed date. However, I'll append it once I have a proper talk with Bob as judging by this, it'll likely change. Thanks for the heads up though :)

This set reminds me of the San Antonio Spurs's old colors. There was another set in the works similar to this that was going to be SA Profile called SA SA. RIP that meme set. :(

Woah, I know the colours you mean! It's funny looking back and thinking of their court, especially after seeing their black and silver for so long :')

I'm interested in the renders which equips FULL LAKES very much, but there are a lot of keycaps will left over if I coose current BASE and FULL LAKES for make above set.

It would be great if the caps for the Numpad in both of FULL LAKES Kit and SALT PAN Kit could be move to the Numpad Kit, and separate mod keys in BASE Kit as "FULL LAKES MOD Kit" for make BASE Kit with any combinations.

Strongly agree. Due to current lead time of ePBT. This set might take a year for manufacture.

Well, lead time once GB closes will be shorter, but since they only allow 3 GBs a month tk preserve their manufacturing lead time, this set may not be able to run until late Q3, Q4 of this year anyways.

MW Mango Keylime popped up in Feb I think, and the GB got delayed to July, so I wouldn't be too optimistic about this setting being allowed to run before end of Q3,especially considering all the other active MW ICs.

+1 for additional tab with alt alphas.

Also appreciate the fact that 40s boards don't miss out on any colors, as the pink carries through the top alpha row.

Really like this set, though would like R1 End and PgDn.
Need those for an 1800 keyboard, for the 4 keys above the numpad.

Also, I really do like the PBTFans icon modifiers.

I'll keep my eyes out for this set! Nice work.

Sadly, due to the extra costs of this gradient, it's unlikely that PBTFans will be happy running the set with both options :/

given the two different alpha kits, would it be possible at this stage to revise the kitting to allow the choice of alphas and mods? i.e., to offer a white alphas kit, a colorful alphas kit, a big/normie mods kit, and an expanded 40s mods kit (WS Orchid Strings has a good example of full 40s mod coverage)?

(the other kits look fine)
