[IC] Relic SSK - A MX compatible IBM SSK replica
« on: Wed, 09 October 2019, 02:14:08 »
Hello everyone,

I'm a huge fan of vintage keyboards, IBM SSK is very popular in the keyboard community. I always want to make a MX compatible SSK.
Original SSK uses curved plate but MX switches always uses flat plate. Each rows need to have different angles. It also need to use a curved PCB to make it work.
I have no idea how to make it work at first. After a lot of research, I find IBM 5576 plate spring keyboard uses a very thin PCB and a curved plate.
Inspired by that, I tried different thickness of PCB. As a result, 0.6mm PCB works.
However, 0.6mm PCB can't use PCB-mount Stabs, so I use Plate-mount Stabs instead.

Here are some renders from thesiscamper:

Features:
  • 7° slope
  • QMK PCB with hot-swap
  • CNC Alu with anode and E-White
  • Color: Industrial Gray, Black, E-White
  • 84-key Winkeyless, 87-key Winkey, ANSI only
  • Unibody TOP Case and 4mm-Plate
  • Solenoid inside
  • Recommend use SA R3 or SA-like Keycaps (such as XDA, DSA)
Price:
TBD (estimate around $400)

I will update more pics when I get prototypes.
Please leave your feedback below.

9009 looking real sweet in those renders.

You should consider running a small GB for SP SA Row 3 9009 along with the keyboard. I believe MOQ for SP is only 25 for stock colors. Albeit the price would be $200-$220 at a small amount of orders but I'm sure you could find 25 or more willing participants even at that price.

Wait wait wait wait wait.
Let me get thsi straight, because I almost didn't believe it when I read the title.
This is still just using MX-styled switches, right?
You're not doing something super crazy like an buckling-sping-to-MX adapter, right?
Because, eff me, a man can dream.

Yes!!! You can use any MX swithes you want (Cherry, Gateron, Kailh, etc.)
And you don't need use any parts from original IBM SSK.

SP SA keycaps need a long production time, maybe we can try XDA 9009?

Yes, there are. Since the PCB is just 0.6mm i got to test the hotswap as well. I have ordered a PCB prototype and i will update it here!

Yeah I might have to hop on this train. It's not a deal breaker for me though. I can take it or leave it, but I do agree it would be better without.

That PCB though. That's cool. With the board being flexed and curved like that, you don't anticipate any switch contact issues?

(as a completely un-related side note... the captcha that needs to be filled out for every post on this forum is a bit much).

The badge will be a PVC sticker like OG SSK, I can add more options when gb start.

Non-HS PCB should be fine but I need to test HS PCB first.

MAO white should look great with this design.

Questions:

1. What's the connector type?

2. Are there adjustable feet like on real SSKs?

3. How does the solenoid mount?

Curved mx plate/pcb is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while.  I hope this succeeds.  Also, I wish we could get plastic instead of aluminum, but that would be a whole different project, i suppose.

Curved mx plate/pcb is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while.  I hope this succeeds.  Also, I wish we could get plastic instead of aluminum, but that would be a whole different project, i suppose.
Plastic will need a mold which is quite expensive.Need a much higher MOQ than CNCed Aluminum. If this one is a succeed project,i will consider to make a plastic one in the future :p :p :p

Sorry, no. We use plate mount stabilizer for this and we will give a set of stabilizer in the kit,so you don't have to buy any stabilizers for this kit.

The prototyping is taking longer than we expected. They need custom tools and it will use a 4 aixs machine. It's very complicate to CNC them so it need more time.

I have missed this IC until now. I agree that it's pretty cool, and I'll keep my eye on it.

If someone could make a blue F1, F2, nav cluster, and arrow key add-on kit, that would be extra cool.

Can you clarify why SA profile is recommended for this board? Is it because of the curved angle of the board, the need for tall keycaps with this shape, or both?

Would MT3 Profile work? Thought about running a KAT 9009 GB?

I don't like the way SA-profile keycaps fit on modern MX boards. Would they be more optimal for this SSK? How would my Filco R3 SA caps do?

He's recommending tall, uniform profile keycaps.  No need for sculpted rows since the plate is curved.  Any uniform profile should work well, in theory.  So yea, the R3 filco caps would be good.  KAM profile might work as well.  KAM wraith seems like a good option for this one.  MT3 is contoured/sculpted, so it might be exaggerated with the curved plate to the point of discomfort.  But no one knows for sure without testing. Hope to see an update in here one day from OP.

Thanks, that clarifies things a lot.

I can see now why non-sculpted caps would be desired. Yeah, KAM Wraith makes sense for this one.

I bet blue or purple Filco SA would also look interesting. Although even the brown ones I have would look natural on gray.

Has this been fully prototyped yet?   Do plate mounted stabilizers work on a curved plate?  Do hotswap sockets work on a curved PCB?  So many questions :)

How do you reckon a GMK set would feel/work on this kit? I bought Darling hoping to slap it on this once if finally comes out, only to then realized that seems not to be the best route to take lol.

I found this keyboard on https://thekey.company/collections/upcoming-releases/products/relic-ssk and I am in love with the retro feel in a tenkeyless format.

Would these keycaps work with it?

https://drop.com/buy/gmk-triumph-adler-keycap-set#overview

What kind of cable will it use? usb-c, usb-micro, ps2?

+1 to no badge, or optional badge sticker.

I registered for this site purely to keep track of this group buy so I don't miss it! Is there a better way to be notified as soon as the buy starts?

First of all, I really admire you. The project is very interesting and worth watching. The idea of making a curved keyboard is not new, but no one has solved it yet. (in custom keyboard) I have also thought about it, the plan is to separate each Round into each pcb and plate. But doing so will make the center of the plate very sag when typing if doing the top mount. PCB mount can be partially solved but inside the case it will be relatively difficult to cnc.

There definitely would be a toggle keymap for it. Just like the Beamspring controller has it. There's also folks who have put solenoids inside their regular MX custom cases.

I wonder whether a curved PCB is going to be a problem.  Would the flex stress make it more likely to crack over time?  Could the stretch/compression of the traces be a problem long-term?

Came to see if there were any updates, but I would like to add my vote to the beige request. I'd like to just go all-in for the retro look if I got one.

Intriguing. However, as I would use this in a Windows/Mac/Linux environment, a WKL only kills it for me.

It's QMK compatible, just reprogram to literally anything else lol.

That’s not preferable for quite a few people - I’ve got an SSK and a couple of full size Model Ms and I gravitate toward the M with three keys to the left of Space as that’s where my muscle memory assumes my fingers will find ctrl/alt/win/apple/whatever.
The OP gets to make the decisions about what they want to build - it’s their project - but having a crack at others for making an observation on what layout they’d prefer isn’t particularly helpful. I’m another who thinks this is a cool project, but won’t buy it if it’s only available win key less.
LOL.
Model M Industrial, SSK, Unicomp 104, Code TKL MX Green, FC660M MX Green + Clear + White + Grey, FC660C Topre 45g, MagicForce 68 USB and Bluetooth, Whitefox, some optical switch 65% Bluetooth split spacebar thing ... wait, I think I need an intervention. Too late, there’s a couple of new Model Fs on the way.
Too much SA is never enough.

Got my prototype PCB today ;D

Based on the Prototype PCB, It looks like you can have three modifiers next to the spacebar, so a winkey should fit in the 1U space between CTRL and ALT. Assuming this ever gets made...

Hopefully it gets made... This thread is approaching its one year anniversary. Starting to feel like this ain't gonna be a thing. :/

Agreed. Would love an update. People have money waiting, don't understand the lack of transparency with these expensive things.

Man, i get all excited reading the OP, especially the "Solenoid" part, then skip to the end of the thread to find it's probably dead in the water. Bummer.

I think it would be safe to simply assume that this is DBA until whenever we do get an update guys. And that's if ever.

Might be it has already be considered:

How can the hotswap pcb design accommodate the per-row convex curving design of the SSK?

Edit: it read it such a long time ago, including the discussion of the flex solution... but solution has not yet been announced (for so long that I forgot having read that).

switches may have to be placed with a wider vertical spacing than the standard 19.05mm to avoid the keycaps crowding. i don't think placing and removing the switches would be an issue since they taper to the top of the switch, and worse case scenario, each switch would have to be placed one after another in a column rather like slating the roof of a house.

personally i'd love to try a 3d printed preonic clone with a curved integrated plate like what OP is doing with this model m clone.

Here's the only issue I have with this board. As somebody who only very recently moved off of daily driving a Model M for a decade, that little ridge across the bottom of the board may be seen as an integral part of the design and you may think it's necessary to achieve the look that you're going for, but adding it to a modern board just for the sake of homage would be a massive mistake. You'd either need to make it wider or axe it all together in my opinion. I kept my Model M immaculate. I cleaned it all the time, full disassembly probably every six months for a full decade of use, but that ridge is nigh impossible to clean out, and we're talking about a plastic board where I'm willing to sit and try to scrape it out with a hobby knife, an anodized aluminum board with that ridge would be torture. For your sake and everybody else's, at least render it out once without that ridge and decide from there.
