I haz it under good authority that Ninjas typically wear glossy black tights with reflective headgear and use magical glowing swords..

There are lots of myths about ninjas. They were more or less soldiers, maybe from an elite group, but soldiers nonetheless who were assigned to conduct espionage and/or sabotage at night -- not fighting.
During the day they attempted to blend into the local population -- in no way did they wear "ninja gear" or cover their face during the day, at least no more than regular farmers.
