GeekHack Kendama Team
« on: Mon, 14 July 2014, 15:11:34 »
In case you missed the memo, Kendama is basically the coolest thing other than keyboards.  The fever spread all over KeyCon West 2014, and if you watched the streams hopefully you've caught the bug as well.

I'm the noobiest kendamer here at GH, so I'm probably not the best person to make this thread, but whatever!  We're all hardcore addicts now!

With the recent crowning of dorkvader as the GH Kendama King after the KeyCon Tournament, let's be sure to show him the respect he deserves.

This thread is for anything and everything kendama.

Go go go!  Let's get hyped!!

I saw the thing a little and went to the conclusion that it's some kind of modern bilboquet. But what's the idea behind it? How do you determine a winner?

I did, at least to help give it momentum. Not sure if I will try it, but if not it's a vote well deserved anyway!

Similar, yes.  And a winner is determined as follows: one person sets the "trick", and the others have three chances to copy it.  If they fail, they receive a letter.  (much like 'horse').  The person who sets the trick then rotates, and this continues until you're down to two people left, at which point you have to do it twice I believe (I'm sure dorkvader or Lingj can explain better).

There may be other competitive things too.  I just started doing this two days ago, so I'm far from the expert.  I'm just all aboard the hype train.

It reminds me too much of stuff like devil sticks, but all the videos I saw of kendama were just guys throwing the apparatus in the air and catching it. And then the 'trick' came in the form of sometimes it turns a little in the air. Sorry I just don't get it, **** looks really dumb. What are the tricks? I'll stop crapping this thread.

It's just a pastime thing, it goes way back. It's not meant to be a groundbreaking form of entertainment, just something silly to do if you're killing time with buds or what not.

This one cause it looks so classy.

What are the tricks? What is the skill? Please explain how this is more than tossing a wooden ball on a string randomly in the air. Unless this is actually a huge troll and that's the joke, in which case well played .

It is "just" tossing the ball and catching it.  But it's not that easy.  And then you do transfers from one cup to the next, spiking (catching the ball on the pointy end) and way more complicated tricks and it gets insane.

I think one problem with these videos is that the people are at a really high level so some of the tricks almost seem unimpressive unless you've actually tried kendama.  But having done it for a couple days, I know how insanely hard it would be to accomplish those tricks.

This is true.  I blame my failure during the competition on the fact that I was already two glasses of a 14% abv beer in at that point.   >:D

But it's okay!  Because now you will buy 5 kendamas and practice all day during meetings and SoonTM you will be able to spike.   :thumb:

ACtualllly... the mechanics of these obsessions are always the same..

it's known as Escapism through extreme focus.

When you watch a movie, practice typing, practice sports..  drink alcohol

The motivations are the same.. to escape the tedium of daily life, and the constant signs that life and living is repetitive.

Through utilizing extreme focus.... look at how the player described it in the video.. "the time when the ball is in the air, and you make the hook,  it's like nothing else matters, time slows down, and when the ball catches, you're back to reality". -paraphrase

This is essentially the mildest form of drug addiction / dependence..  Only it's less likely to spiral out of control, because well "it's mild"...

So if we look at the pathway more simply..   it starts as a "state of urgency", you force yourself into a state of alert, "it's imperative" that you get the ball on the stick...  this takes you into the NOW, and away from all other thoughts, (some of which) may be more important/pressing..

Then, when the ball clicks,  it's a moment of elation, a reward system that you give yourself, a shot of serotonin.. a RELIEF...

So. in summary.. what is kendama, an escape,  how does it reward,  by causing you short term stress, then instant elation.

SAME mechanic as video games sans computer and (Trichotillomania), hahaha

I'm not here to argue whether the Kendama practice may be beneficial or useless or fun or anything else..

but you can not deny that there is a concrete answer to WHY do it.....

That's a very interesting perspective! I am a fan of that school of thought. I see more merit in the long-term aspect of these types of hobbies. I like seeing progress and knowing that I've become better at some thing. It's even cooler when there are people around to encourage and acknowledge each other's skills/growth.
