Title: Ergonomic DataDesk SB-5000 Mechanical Keyboard
Post by: Suprcynic on Thu, 02 June 2011, 22:51:52
I was referred over here by someone at OCN because he said this was the place to talk keyboards. I bought a DataDesk SB-5000 mechanical keyboard for 2.99 at goodwill. I was planning on using it but it's incredibly loud... too loud for my office. It works great, nothing sticks, just so freaking loud when you type. I almost threw it away but I heard that some of these are worth a few bucks. Is it worth anything or is it trash? I figured I'd ask before I got rid of it.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I'm unfamiliar with this forum format. Thanks.

Its made in the US and if it is "clicky" loud than it might be mechanical. If so, you can sell it here for sure.
You should try to "safely" remove a keycap to check for a switch.

This is what it has and yes it is a very loud and tactile click.

Maybe a white Alps switch...very clean too. Looks like the same as a Focus 2000, 2001.

Any value to it or should I trash it?

My kids could use a good split mech 'board. If you don't want it for yourself, I'll take it.

DataDesk is worse then Unicomp when it comes to innovation and seeing a new project to completion.  They have been about to release their new Smartboard for years now.

To answer your question...these don't really have any collectible value and you likely won't be able to turn a profit worth your time.  But if the keyboard is fully functional, it would be a waste to throw it away.

Yeah. Hopefully it's worth the cost of shipping for someone.

I'm now finding that it's only for a MAC. I thought that it had different connections on the back but alas it has 3 of the same connector. All for MAC.

It's probably not going to sell for all that much then. Nice board for those who have adapters.

The obvious mac keys (and to a lesser extent, the fact that it doesn't have a cord, seemingly at all) didn't give that away?

Oh well. I was considering getting it until I heard it was XM's. If I didn't like it (I have an adapter) I was going to put the complicated white switches into my XM whites board.
